The Shop

Past the perennial greens, Mark's luminous pastures and the flying pebble's path. Lucy and me ran, ran away from the austere, patronizing words from our uncle. We'd had enough. Ever since mamma and papa died uncle had been in charge, he'd inherited the farm and us. Every bit of criticism he flung at us about mamma and papa filled us up. We kept it all bottled up but now we'd had enough we were leaving forever.

Panting breathlessly we ran with our rack-sacks bobbing loosely along. The beautiful sun shone bright, dashing the most magnificent sun light perfectly on the untouched sea. The sea gently sang a song made from elaborate waves. The prolific crabs were feeding and the minority birds were feeding on them, peacefully and quietly. Our feet felt good in the cool water a huge difference from the scorching sand.

We were going to be free, going to do what we wanted without that vindictive man. But where would we go? I was in charge now for good. Oh, I missed papa he would have known what to do he would have got that Uncle Bob right in the nose. Then Lucy interrupted my pensive thoughts and directed my eye to a dark and small house covered with unnecessary nails, rusted into the blocks of wood that were loosely bound together. The roof of the shack blasted an echoing horrible sound that sprang to our ears in an uncontrollable manner. Suddenly, a door shrieked, like a fingernail torn along a chalkboard. Unconsciously Lucy and me, in a moment's time were inside the wreck. One step inside, took us to a world of wonder. Antiques were everywhere. Lucy found a Magic book with a beautiful leather casing. There were a number of porcelain dolls glimmering, but still dull with age. The shelves were packed tight with books of all sorts, many small and many thick, all standing guards. Just then we heard the stairs creek one at a time, bearing weight at a threshold. The curtains flung open and there stood two sock-like shoes. Inside them sat two old bony legs fitted with knackety knees, and then a body as thin as a stick and a wrinkled face, each line telling a story of a lugubrious life. The old lady approached us. We both were shaking vigorously. Then a gentle hand touched me on the shoulder. Her voice was frail and light it beckoned me towards her. Soon I had been lead to another compartment to the shop. I was surprised that there was another one. The shack couldn't have accommodated another room it was impossible! The fragile creature obviously intimidated Lucy, for she came yelling and screaming telling the old granny to leave me alone, I quietened her down. There was nothing to be unnerved about. The woman then turned around to a shelf and took out a very peculiar box. She handed it to me; it was decorated in a very unusual way. A cuneiform inscription encased the ancient box. A pattern drenched with the colours red and black resembled something close to a cat. This box was old, really old. I looked up to ask what it was for. Just a smile past along the woman's face and was gone like the wind in a cornfield, and so was the woman and the shop. There we stood, Lucy mouth wide open and me peering into the box with great wonder and curiosity.

Philosophy and the Body Health and the Body in the Ancient World

The practice of medicine along with rhetoric and philosophy was considered a high form of culture. Philosophy and medicine were considered related. Medicine was not only considered to cure illnesses but also to define knowledge on ones body, what one ate and other activities such as sleeping and wakefulness, medicine was considered to be rational. If Philosophy was for the spiritual, medicine was for the body. In Rome, it was considered to be necessary to know about medicine, so that one can take care if ones self if he or she were struck down by illness or another ailment. Hygiene was considered to be a health practice, something all Romans were obliged to practice, for one could not always seek a physician for ones health, especially if one didn't take care of themselves. The makeup of ones house was also considered to have an effect on a person, and the way a room was set out could have good or bad effects on a person. Different times of days, seasons and a person's age also affected a person. What one ate and drank was also taken into consideration as certain foods and drinks, such as food that heat the body and drinks that dissolve were considered. Hot baths, strenuous exercises and being able to holds ones breath was also considered to have a good effect on the body and different seasons needed different forms of exercise, food and drinks for one to have a good healthy body. Sexual pleasure centred entirely on the body. Education and habits can cause desire to appear at the wrong time. The body dictates to the body, yet the soul plays a part in it. Nature also plays a part in the differentiations between the sexes, the attraction a man has to a woman and vice-versa. Food also plays a part in out emotional needs. Those in the upper classes were well feed but physically weak, the lower classes less feed but physically strong, whilst the people in the army and the gladiators would have been the best feed and the physically fit and health, their lifestyle not taken in consideration. A mans anatomy was considered by people such as Galen, to be outward, while a woman's to be inward, although they were both for pleasure and of the same kind. That both woman and man were able to produce sperm, with the exception that it was less perfect in a woman. Desire and pleasure are considered to interact, with desire being the soul and pleasure being the body. These emotions are human but also divine, as it leads to the continuation of the human race. Sexual union as considered a fact of nature, as it contributes to health, strength, courage and generation and so it should not be considered bad, although it can be dangerous, such as the spread of disease. In ancient times, the human body, sex, health and the philosophies all interacted with one another, although they could be kept separately, they also worked with one another. For a healthy body was considered good for the sex life, just as it is today, while the philosophies dealt with the moral and ethical issues of sex, and they all involved the human body and man and woman's relation with one another.

On March 5th 00,The U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments challenging the Childrens Internet Protection Act (CIPA). The law requires public schools and libraries to install Internet filters on their computers so children and adults cannot view inappropriate information on the Internet. Schools and libraries that fail to install filters stand to lose federal E-rate funding for Internet access. The Justice Department contends that CIPA gives local communities the alternative to set their filtering software at varying levels. Government attorneys also dispute that schools and libraries are not necessary to install the software; as an alternative, they could choose not to receive federal funds. Opponents, as well as the American Library Association and the American Civil Liberties Union, quarrel that filters are a flawed tool that restricts the rights of students and adults to view First Amendment-protected information.

The author gives two views into the argument, and lets the reader decided a stance on this issue. The first view is that of Solicitor General Theodore B. Olson. Olson takes the issue in defense of the Children's Internet Protection Act, stating ''when libraries block Internet pornography from computer terminals, they are simply refusing to put on their computer screens the same material they do not put on their shelves. Olson feels that as libraries have banned books from shelves in that past, they are also entitled the right to ban certain web sites that may share the same content. In offense to the Children's Internet Protection Act, Paul M. Smith feels the act is against First Amendment rights. Smith, who has been on behalf of the American Library Association and the American Civil Liberties Union since this bill was first signed in 000, has a different view to library filtering then Olson. Smith sees the Internet not as a library "bookshelf", yet as a "public forum". As a public forum smith feels that to require libraries to refuse the right to use the Internet would be the end of the public forum doctrine,'' Therefore, under the Supreme Courts First Amendment precedents, the government may not limit speech in a "public forum" lacking an interest and a policy narrowly modified to serve that interest. The issue currently under debate is whether to consider the Internet as a mere old-fashioned library bookshelf or a public forum?

Currently the government distributes more than $00 million a year in grants and subsidies that give public libraries "discounted Internet access". Mr. Olson argues that if a certain library felt that the bill was a violation of there rights they could decline filtering the Internet, yet loose federal funding. Over the past six years, Congress has made many attempts to control porn on the Internet. The result is a confusing collection of laws that, at least in theory, protect children from material that some communities consider unsuitable. My view on this issue is merely that of Mr. Olson. I feel that if the library has the right to regulate books on shelves, they should also have the right to regulate Internet usage. I see the library not as a public forum; therefore I feel it does not violate First Amendment rights. If per say a certain community did feel it violates there rights, under any circumstance they have the choice not to participate in the filtering law, yet will be subject to loose federal funding. Ultimately I feel the choice lies in the residents of communities around the country.

Technology and its Drawbacks

In today's world, it is impossible to neglect the importance of technology since it easier for facilitates our lives. It is generally accepted that technology provides people better life conditions but beside its benefits , the increasing loneliness caused by developing technology should be mentioned as well.

The more the technology develops, the more the loneliness of humanity becomes. As people become aware of their ndependence , understanding that they do not need others anymore, they prefer to be unsociable. As a result of this thought ; today's modern citizen lives like a machine ,programmed only for going to work ,coming back home on the determined time without desiring for anything else. Technology is the main reason for this isolation of humanity.

Do my essay on Both the technological tools and the uses to which humanity has put them have created modern civilations in which loneliness is ever increasing'' CHEAP !

Internet could be a good example which supports the idea given above. By using internet, people could provide unlimited information without any need to communicate with other people. When they have a problem to discuss with others, they could talk to others again via internet. So internet prevents people from talking face to face. These examples can be broadened unlimitedly. Another example can be television. Most of the families spend most of their free time watching television instead of talking to their children, sharing both their sadness and happiness . Watching television, playing games on the computers or chatting with others on the internet firstly may initially seem enjoyable to the people. However, they can not notice that they lose their friends and families gradually. New technology brings so interesting newnesses into our lives that it is impossible for us to resist those things.

As a result ; people are isolated from others by technology and these effects of technology increase day by day. Here, we are responsible for limiting the effects of technology on our lives. In my opinion we should use the benefits of todays technology while neglecting the drawbacks of it because we know that life is impossible without it.

What is a hero? The dictionary definition for the word hero is "one that is much admired or shows great courage". To me a hero is one that thinks of others before themselves and is willing to help someone in need without hesitance. Either way we look at it, if someone is titled a hero by someone else one can always assume the best of that person. My biggest hero is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, because he made the biggest sacrifice for others, which was to die for us. None can compare in my mind. Several male and female African American "heroes" come to us from the colonial and antebellum periods of American history, however two in particular inspires me the most. The colonial period "signifies the age of revolution in American history" and from this period Phillis Wheatley and Lucy Terry Prince are the ones that rouse up my inner thoughts and touches my heart with their heroic acts and fights for equality.

Phillis Wheatley was captured as a slave and transported to the American colonies as a child. John and Susanna Wheatley of Boston then purchased her in 1761. Phillis learned to read and write with the help of the Wheatley women. In her writings she focuses on the contrast between slavery and freedom as a black woman in colonial America. Phillis was freed around 1778 after John Wheatley's death and became the wife of John Peters, a freeman. She and John Peters had three children, but none of them lived to adulthood. Phillis Wheatley died in 1784 while working in a Boston boarding house.

Like Whealey, Lucy Terry Prince was African by birth. She was brought to America and sold as a slave. After arriving in the colonies, she was purchased by Ebenezer Wells,a resident of Deerfield, Massachusetts. She eventually learned to read and write. Terry wed Abijah Prince around 1756. He purchased his wife from her owners. They relocated to Guilford, Vermont around 1760. Lucy died in 181.

Phillis Wheatley is a woman who not only spoke out against injustice and oppression, but also dramatized the possibilities and limitations of the age of the Revolutionary War. She wrote books during a time when few men and women could even read, gaining the respect of thousands. Lucy Terry Prince like Wheatley also led a remarkable life as an advocate. She first demonstrated a willingness to defend her rights in a public debate while living in Guilford. In 1785, white neighbors threatened her and her family's lives and destroyed some of their property. Lucy appealed in person to Governor Thomas Chittenden and his Council seeking protection from these assaults. On June 7, 1785, the council ordered the law enforcement authority in the town to defend her family.

Although both Lucy and Phillis were activists for equal rights they also differed in some ways. Prince addresses other subjects in her writings like in "Bars Fight", she writes about an Indian attack against white colonists. The poem reveals the tension between whites and Indians in colonial America and indicates the poet's sensitivity to the social and political climate of the period.

Both Wheatley and Prince were slaves at one point and both were emancipated. Although these remarkable women differed in some ways they both had the same desire and passion for equality and freedom. These women could have ended their fight at the time of their own emancipation, but their desire and belief kept them in the fight for the equality of all. I believe these women played a pivotal role in securing the freedom of every person in the United States.

Intro to Film

11/6/0

Mildred Piers

When does the music move and match the motion of objects in the film?

During the opening credits the music is very bitter sweet and gives the audience mixed emotions about the rest of the movie. The powerful orchestra becomes loud and soft with crescendos and decrescendos as the waves of the ocean wash up and then retreat from the shore is a rolling motion. Another example of this is when the police officers are running down the hill of sand and chasing Wally, the music is in sync with their footsteps as they stumble down the hill.

When does the music try to capture the overall emotions and mood?

The music becomes dramatic when something bad is about to happen. It builds up so the audience becomes tense until the climax. The music was always very mournful and sad; it brought out emotions when Kay was dying of pneumonia. It is supposed to make the audience sympathize with Mildred who loses her daughter. The music is also emotional when Mildred and Veta are re-united after Mildred marries Mr. Piers. This is done by having a powerful orchestral score to bring out and enhance the emotions that actors are portraying on the scene.

Was the music conspicuous or did it break through?

For the majority of the movie the music stayed inconspicuous. Unless the audience was listening for the soul purpose of hearing the musical score it would remained un-noticed because the audience has not been trained to listen for a musical break- through. However, there were certain dramatic scenes in the movie where the music was noticeably loud and stood out. After Veta slaps her mother there is loud noticeably music. In other scenes such as the bar or restaurant scenes there is parlor or saloon music that is noticeable to the audience.

If the music does demand your focus does it still maintain a subordinate function in the film as a whole? How?

When the musical score in this film did demand attention, it did not draw the attention away form the characters or the dialogue. Instead it supports and adds to the action on the screen. The only scene where the noise was distracting was the scene in the jail where no one was allowed to talk and there were little abstract sounds like, the clock ticking, the newspaper ruffling, chairs being pushed in and out, coughing and footsteps. However, all these sounds helped to build the atmosphere of the room, the tension and frustration of Mildred as she is sitting in the station. Music and sounds also helped set the pace and rhythms of the film as the story unfolded. The music even though noticeable in some scene served to stimulates the audience emotional responses and reinforces the effects happening on the screen.

What if the musical score was removed from the film?

If the musical score was removed from the film, the film would defiantly not have the same dramatic impact. The music in this film is used to fill dramatic pauses in dialogue and it is also used to effectively transition between scenes. There is military drum roll type music when there is a scene with the police. There is lonely mournful music that is often played when Mildred is talking and thinking about the past, setting the overall tone of the movie. The score put the audience in the specific time and action. It makes the audience feel sad, or angry and warns them when something terrible is about to happen. It enables the audience to further express and understand the feelings and attitudes of the characters and their actions.

In "The Egg and the Sperm" Emily Martin explores the idea that scientific knowledge on male and female reproductive organs has been greatly influenced by pre-conceived notions of the social roles of males and females in society. She sites several different texts in which the reproductive process was described from very similar standpoints. The male was always portrayed as being more dominant, efficiant, and generally more exciting than the female. The female was always described as having a more passive role in the whole process. The writers of each of the texts Martin sites gives the sperm an almost heroic role. The reproductive process was described in the same manor as a ferry-tale would be told. Basically, the brave sperm would set out on the dangerous journey to rescue the helpless egg, which was portrayed as the damsel in distress. Is this what really happens in during fertilization, or is this just an interpretation from someone who has been jaded by society? Martin believes the latter to be true. She writes that others have also begun to question the traditional discription of the reproduction process. Further investigation has found that the sperm is not as active, and the egg not as passive as it was once believed. Descriptions have now altered to incourporate the new findings, but Martin is critical of what may still be implied about gender roles in these new texts.

Are the sleeping metaphores in the traditional discription of the egg and sperm in place because traditionally all of these texts have been written by men? Each of the writings sighted by Martin show the same view point men are superior to women. Even if the article does not come right out and say this, it is implied. Each article describes reproduction with the male seeming to have the most important role. (Last time I checked, the presence a male and female were equally nessessary in producing a child.) In these texts, the sperm takes on the role that a man would be expected by society to take on. He is dominant, brave, and needed in the protection of the female. The egg, or female is not really expected to do anything. She is passive, or even incapable. Why is this? Men have written these articles, so all of the information that the average reader receives is from a man's point of view. It is hard to believe that these arcticles would have been written in the same way had a woman been the writer. Women do not believe that we are less capable than men in every situation, but somehow it seems as though men do believe this. Since the men are the ones who have always written articles on such topics as reproduction, the entire topic begins to shift to a man point of view until that is the only point of view. All of this "scientific" information comes back to both men and women, and pretty soon serves as some kind of "evidence" that men really are superior to women. None of this information is ever questioned much though. Personally, I never knew that the sperm did not play such an active role and the egg such a passive role in reproduction. It was all I had ever read, and who am I to question a scientist? This article has made me more aware of how information can be slanted because of a bias writer.

Another type of writing by people who traveled to the Congo was observational and diary writing. Joseph Conrad, Stanley's officers, George Washington Williams, Edmund Ricard,Belgian senator (11)

There were many examples in the book of writing, done by both blacks and whites, to improve lives of the Congolese. Stanislas Lefranc a Belgium prosecutor, a catholic, and a monarchist witnessed the use of the chicotte on young boys for laughing in the presence of a white man. After witnessing these atrocities he wrote descriptions of them in newspapers and pamphlets which he published in Belgium. One description said, "The station chief selects the victims… Trebling, haggard they lie face down on the ground… Each time that the torturer lifts up the chicotte, a redish stripe appears on the skin of the pitiful victims… In a refinement of evil, some officers, and I've witnessed this, demand that when the sufferer gets up, panting, he must graciously give the military salute" (11).

- George Washington Williams- Black (1)

- CN Borrisson- Swedish missionary (15)

- Edgar Canisius, American (11)

- Roger Casement (10)

- William Sheppard- Black (15)

- Samual Lapsley (15)

- John Harris (16)

- E.V. Sjoblom (17)

- E.D. Morel- even though he did not travel to the Congo (11)

The definition of Civilization at the time by Europeans/ Americans (Hypocrisy)

- pg. 80-8- definition

- pg. - Anti-slave (hypocrisy)

- pg. 100- public horrified by loss of white life

- pg. 18- Europeans leave their morality leave behind in Europe when they come to Africa

- pg. 166- moral degradation

- pg. 4- Authors example of Conrad's view of civilization

- pg. 6- definition and how it was destroyed

European/ American view of Africa up until Leopold's colonization

- pg. 6, pg. 1(Stanley writes), pg. 101

There are many examples of whites writing for propaganda use, that use language that obviously perpetuates and encourages the idea that the Africans were not civilized.

- pg. 44- Leopold never travels but he uses the language

- pg. 1- Stanley

- pg. 51- Stanley ("dark")

- pg. 68, 6, - Stanley's officers

- pg. 11- Belgian senator

- pg. 11- shows no compassion

- pg. 7- Example of propaganda/ travel

- pg. 6- White observation

There were white writers who realized the immortality of Leopold's terrorism, and expressed it.

- pg. 188- fully described the Africans as civilized- Mary Kinglsley

- pg. 11- Canisius

- pg. 10- Lefranc

- pg. 16- John Harris

- pg. 1- Canisius- evidence used by novel (Morel did not travel)

There were also many black writers who wanted Leopold's terrorism to end and wrote to try to stop it.

- pg. 10, 107 108- Williams- factual, lawyerly, open, organized, accusatory

- pg. 15- Author's opinion of why blacks wanted to go

- pg. 154, 157, 158- Sheppard

- pg. 165- Sheppard

- pg. 157- Sheppard (Kuba)

Conclusion Some white writers, and all of the black writers- took the time/ put aside preconceived notion of the Congolese- they discovered that they were civilized.. other white writers (for propaganda)- wrote that Africans = uncivilized, Europeans/Americans = civilized- preconceived notion--- Leopold's propaganda. By valuing the individual, their culture and their history we acknowledge that they are human, civilized and worthy of compassion and moral treatment. Hochschild's book does not allow us to know about the individuals, culture and history of the Congolese people. (look at written outline).

The major players

There are several different players in this industry. Some are just focusing on manufacturing handsets while others also develop other parts of the mobile phone system. The four major players in the handset manufacturing industry are Siemens, Nokia, Sony/Ericsson and Samsung.

Siemens

In 17 Siemens entered the mobile phone market. They got the mission to develop a mobile phone for the NMT network to companies in Scandinavia. The software was developed in Sweden, the hardware in Norway and the design in Denmark. The project was successful and in 181 Siemens had developed the first mobile phone on this market. In the 180s Siemens started to cooperate with Spectronic AB, and together they developed portable NMT phones. In 17 they introduced their first GSM mobile phone with colour display.

The motives and incentives for handset manufacturers to participate in G

Although the G market for handsets is very uncertain, many handset manufactures have started their investment in G a few year ago. As a matter of fact the handsets manufacturers should be proactive in developing G handsets. Otherwise in case of the success of the G the current major manufacturers will lose their market shares and the newcomers will capture the market. In fact the competition for G handsets is not just to avoid felling behind. In fact the internet based mobile communication is a new market since it offers a lot of new data services such as broadband access, video & audio streaming, file download, web browsing, on-line services, m-commerce, e-mail and advanced picture messaging. Market forecast for these new services is quit under uncertainty, however a forecast by Johnson which is mostly based on the Japanese success in i-mode is presented in figure 4.

Due to G new services and the capability of G to support G service it is expected that the G users shift to G. To use the new G services most users have to replace their handsets with the new G handset and this will increase the replacement handsets shipment in the coming years. Figure 5 present the expected replacement handsets shipment in the coming years.

The novel 'I am not Esther' is written by Fleur Beale. The central character is Kirby Greenland also known as Esther Pilgrim. She is the central character because the novel is based on the hard time that she has in her life. Kirby has to change her lifestyle and identity. She has to parent her mother, this is the reason why Kirby is very out spoken and speaks her mind. She is used to telling her mother what to do around the house. Although Kirby is going through a hard time in her life she is still kind enough to help others around her with their problems.

Kirby has to change her whole lifestyle and identity. She has to live in a house with many children, which she is not use too. The family are religious and se has to obey their religion. They believed that she was not brought up well because she didn't believe in what they believed. They changed her name from Kirby to Esther. "Am I Esther or am I Kirby? A good question who was I?" This is Kirby talking to her school counsellor confused and lost about who she was. Defining who you are is important; no one should try to take your identity away from you. The Pilgrim's have a Rule in their religion, which they obey and Kirby has to obey this Rule too. "We do not have a radio or a newspaper, we keep our thoughts turned to the lord." Aunt Naomi explaining 'The Rule' to Kirby. The Pilgrims believe that there should not be any distractions from the lord they should only be focussing on the lord.

Kirby is a very open person and speaks her mind. All her life she has been parenting her mother organising the food and paying the bills for her. Kirby is used to doing what she wants. When she gets told what to do in the Pilgrim house she doesn't like this and disobeys their beliefs. She was sick of wearing her hair in a plait. "Kirby howled and hacked at her hair. I felt the hair on my head frizz out into a wild halo." Kirby refuses to wear her hair in a plait any longer. When her hair frizzes out into a wild halo this is a symbol that she is not bad, she can be an angel. A wild angel into born to go by the beliefs of the Pilgrim's religion.

Although Kirby is experiencing a tough patch in her life with the changes and he mother leaving her all of a sudden she was still kind and helpful enough to help Maggie and Aunt Naomi. Maggie is a young little girl that has just lost a sister around the same age as Kirby called Miriam. Maggie has been told that she is dead but really she has been kicked out of the house for disobeying the lord. Kirby and Maggie become good friends and look out for each other. When Kirby goes to leave to find her mother Maggie asks in a sad voice "Why are you leaving? Don't leave me!" Maggie doesn't want to be traumatised again like she was when Miriam left her. She is scared that she will loose Kirby too. When Aunt Naomi becomes very ill because of her pregnancy Uncle Caleb doesn't pay much attention to her because her thinks that god will get her through the hard patches she experiences. If it weren't for Kirby Aunt Naomi and the baby may not have survived.

Kirby found it very hard having to live with a family she had never meet before. It was hard for her because they believed in a different religion and she had to learn to obey it. Being out spoken and doing what she wanted around the house also changed for her she had to obey Uncle Caleb and Aunt Naomi. She had to form new relationships with others but managed well and helped them with their problems too. This experience was hard for Kirby and would be hard for anyone who experienced this.

Edgar Linton

Edgar represents the conventional morality which Catherine and Heathcliff deny. He is viewed as a resident of Thrushcross Grange and he does not relocate throughout his life but is raised and dies here. As his wife, Catherine must move to the Grange, where Edgar is the master and patriarch. His inheritance, unlike that of Heathcliff, is legitimate and he is an educated man.

In many ways, Edgar is governed by materialism; we need only examine the description of Thrushcross grange to appreciate the environment which characterises him. He is defined as 'a doll', and a 'spoiled child'. His character is consistent and his love for Catherine devoted and traditional.

Linton Heathcliff

Linton Heathcliff is the offspring of Isabella Linton and Heathcliff, such an unnatural union that he himself is doomed to fail. He has inherited the worst character traits from both parents. He is manipulated by Heathcliff and dies, tended only by Cathy.

Linton Heathcliff is the son of Heathcliff and Isabella. He combines the worst characteristics of both parents, and is effeminate, weakly, and cruel. He uses his status as an invalid to manipulate the tender-hearted younger Catherine. His father despises him. Linton marries Catherine and dies soon after.

GLOBALIZATION

The objective of the WTO is to create a single geographic market that is worldwide in scope, with a single set of trading rules that are worldwide in application. Globalization doesnot mean just 'global free market'. According to Webster's dictionary "globalize," means "to make worldwide in its scope or application." Every nation has the right to maintain those aspects of its local and national economies that it feels necessary to protect its resources and its people from exploitation. In a truly "global free market," the social and political boundaries that now protect nations from such economic exploitation no longer exist.

GLOBALIZATION AND AGRICULTURE

Globalization has a significant influence on agriculture and the food supply that favored economies of scale at the international level.

In a global agricultural economy, small farms will be replaced by large farms, which in turn will be controlled by giant multinational corporations. Small farmers quite simply will not be able to compete in a "free market" global economy. Many small farmers of the world rely on horticultural crops for their viability. Thus, the implications of globalization may be even more dramatic for horticulture than for most other agricultural sectors. But even more important, ecological and cultural boundaries are essential to the long run sustainability of agriculture. Thus, if all economic boundaries are removed, human life on earth will not be sustainable.

GLOBALISATION OF INDIAN AGRICULTURE BOON OR BANE?

The WTO agreements curtail the power of developing countries like India to frame people-oriented policies in fundamental areas such as investment, services, social welfare, medicines and agriculture. Exporting agricultural produce from India is extremely difficult.

The massive subsidies given to domestic farmers in industrialized countries generate over-production. The resulting surpluses are dumped in world markets with the help of more subsidies. These highly subsidized exports from rich countries drive down the prices for exports from developing countries, devastating the prospects of small and poor farm families. For example prices of tea have remained depressed and continue to remain well below peak levels recorded in 18. Lower prices have resulted in lowered value of tea exports from India. Prices of coffee have also fallen by 70% since 17; costing developing country exports about $8 billion in lost foreign exchange earnings.

Trade liberalization and the globalization of agriculture are supposed to increase the production of food and improve the economic situation of farmers across the world. However, in country after country the process is leading to a decline in food production and productivity, a decline in conditions for farmers and a decline in food security for consumers. Globalization is deepening food insecurity over the world.

The Indian agricultural sector is too vital to the country's economy. It is the largest sector in terms of output and employment. More than 5% of the GDP comes from agriculture and over 65% of the working population depends on agriculture and allied industries. Over the years, our farmers, diligently and tirelessly, built a strong foundation for agricultural development. From a net importer of agricultural products, the country went on to becoming, first, self-reliant and then an exporter of food products. Agriculture became the mainstay of Indian economy. It helped the nation tide over serious economic crises. But now the WTO agreements in general has dealt a very severe blow not only to Indian agriculture and the food security of the nation but also to the rights of farm families, indigenous communities and the rural poor, and our genetic resources and traditional knowledge.

Billy the Kid

Billy was always a kid at heart. That is why it hurt so much when he was taken away. Billy Rice was born in 18, much like the rest of the kids in my class. I met Billy in the 4th grade. He had just transferred in from out of town. We went to Saint Patrick's elementary and then proceeded on to Holy Trinity Catholic Middle School. Billy and I developed quite a relationship through all of the years together in school. He was a great athlete and we both were always captains on the playground teams. I have to mention we had one of the fiercest rivalries when it came down to being squared off against one another. This is what exactly brought us to be such great friends. We later would team up on our middle school teams to basically dominate every field or court we stepped on. I would never have guessed back then that Billy would get distracted and ultimately pay for it. It was late March, 000, and Billy had just come by my house to shoot some hoops in the back yard. Billy was going to spend his Spring Break in Israel with his dad so he came by to get in one last game of one-on-one before he took off for the Promised Land.

I spent my Spring Break with my family, all six of us down in Key Largo, Florida. It was a great time just relaxing and hanging out with all of my brothers. My mom and I had to leave two days before everybody else because I had to get back for the State AAU tournament. After packing up and getting on the plane, I was happy to be heading home. It was a Wednesday night and I planned on leaving in the morning to go to Greensboro, North Carolina for my tournament. I still remember my plane taking off at 845pm that Wednesday night. I got into Charlotte about 11pm that night. My mom and I drove home and I went right to bed, exhausted from the day of travel.

That morning I got up around seven because my first game would be at noon in Greensboro, which was a good two hour drive. As I put my bag into the car to head out, the phone rang. From that point on, I am not sure what happened. All I specifically remember is my mom talking to Peter's mom, one of my other friends. My mom put on that panic face and was just saying "Calm down, calm down" to Pete's mom. Mom told me to go get the paper. I ran outside and was wondering what could have happened, did something happen to Peter? What was it? Having somewhat of a clue as to what may have happened I got out the Local News section and skimmed the front page. Down in the bottom right of the page was a story about two Charlotte Catholic (my High School) kids who were killed last night at 851pm in a car accident.

Billy left one of his other friend's houses around 845pm that Wednesday night. Katie, his girlfriend, was also with him. Knowing what I know now, Billy had six beers before he left to take Katie home. He was driving on Park Road, a four lane road with a median. I later found out he tried passing somebody on the right and lost control of his Honda Accord. It hit the right curb, spun across the median and smacked right into an oncoming fire truck which was responding to a false alarm. Both Billy and Katie were killed instantly.

I obviously was devastated for a long time about losing one of my best friends. I questioned everything, why did that fire truck have to be at that spot right at that moment? Would he have been killed if I were in Charlotte? Would I have been with him? After about a year of denial and hard feelings, I began to take the best thing I could out of the entire situation. Maybe one of the toughest lessons I will ever have to live, but I really learned the dangers of drinking and driving. I also realized how important your friends can be to you and what it is like when they are gone for good. I began to appreciate many aspects of my life which would have gone unnoticed if it weren't for Billy, such as relationships and family. It is hard to say, but I, along with some other of my close friends, thank Billy in a way. We thank him for all he taught us. We all know one day we will meet again, and it will be just like the old times on the fields.

Alienation

In all of the pictures and stories and the movie we were exposed to in this unit alienation was the key to making them impact the way that they made you think. Especially in "Do the Right Thing" the alienation was ever present. Alienation shapes the way we live, think, and exist as human beings.

In all of the stories we read, the main character or idea was impacted greatly by the alienation that they faced. The one that stuck with me the most was "Mending Wall" by Robert Frost. When I was reading about how his neighbor used a wall to alienate himself from the people surrounding him I couldn't believe that he would actually like it. Especially when he said, "a good wall makes a good neighbor". I thought about that statement for a long time trying to figure out what he was thinking about. It occurred to me that he just didn't agree with things being blown or tossed into his yard by the people surrounding him, but ten I thought a little bit deeper into the issue. I thought about his mindset and what could posses him to create such a barrier. Then I thought that maybe in the area of the world that he was living in, solitude was part of the upside. Maybe he was living there just to get away from the outside world. He could have been a writer or an artist and not wanted anyone interrupting his thought process. It's not like he was completely anti-social because he seemed cordial enough when he would talk to his neighbor when they would repair their wall every spring. That is the only way I could make sense of the fact that this man was alienating himself from everyone in the outside world and thus changing the way that he exists as a human being.

Buy cheap Alienation term paper

The pictures were a little bit more in depth. There were so many that we went through that it was hard to get a structured, single idea that they were all painting or taking pictures about. I came to the conclusion that all of the art work we looked at were about some emotional feeling that the artists had. They all seemed to be rather dark and almost manic depressive. They all contained alienation unlike "Mending Wall". I feel that this is more of a way for the artist to express what their minds think about their own existence. Maybe they felt alienated because they were different or had something tragic happen in their lives. The somber moods of these pieces of art were a very vivid, and sometimes creepy, expression of how the artist's minds think.

In the movie "Do the Right Thing" the alienation factor had levels. There were the people that thought they were being alienated by someone and then the people that were alienating other people and also the people that were alienating themselves. Often throughout the movie I noticed that sometimes the people that thought they were being alienated by someone else ended up alienating others themselves. The plot thickened when Bug Out wanted pictures of black people up on the wall of an Italian restaurant which was owned by Italian Americans who would rather just keep to themselves and not get involved in the racial issues of the time. When it eventually escalates into a full scale riot I realized what the title was really about. When everyone in the neighborhood was standing outside the restaurant everything could have ended by one person doing the right thing. Someone could have stood up and said that it wasn't the owners fault that Radio had died and then it would have all been over. But no one could find it in their soul to stand up and fight the mob mentality. These people's existence as human beings was changed and twisted by the alienation that they felt.

Overall I liked this unit and I learned a lot of things about life and how different people deal with different things. Alienation is one of the worst feelings you can have if it's forced upon you, or maybe it's what you desire and hope for. Either way it makes you feel alone and separated from the outside world. This feeling can change your life, thinking and overall existence as a human being.

Dear Professor McAllister

Re "Directed Study" course proposal in area of computational biology

I enjoyed meeting with you last Friday and discussing the option of taking a "directed study" course under your supervision. Computational biology was the area of study that I was considering, and given your past research in Computer Science and Molecular Biology, I would like you to supervise me during this course. As per our discussion, I have created the following proposal for the "directed study" course that I would like to take.

Course Name and Department

• COMP 48 Directed Study Computational Biology

• Computer Science Department.

Course Description

This course will allow student's to develop and implement algorithms for selected problems in computational biology, including the simulation of the immune system and the determination of methods for inferring specific aspects of protein structure from protein sequence data. Students will work under the supervision of Professor Horace McAllister.

Prerequisites

• Admission to the 4th year of the BTACS degree program, or to the 4th year of the Computing Science Major program.

• 6 credits of first year Biology.

Determine organizational mission, goals & objectives

Develop business unit strategies

Provide for implementation, evaluation & control

Mission Statements...

Address the issue of "what business we are in"

Represent clear and concise statements that explain the reason for being

In contrast, vision statements deal with aspirations

Mission Statements Address 5 Issues...

Who are we?

Who are our customers?

What is our operating philosophy? (for example, beliefs, values, ethics, etc.)

What are our core competencies or competitive advantages?

What are our concerns & interests related to our employees, community, social issues or the environment?

Concerns About Mission Statements

If they are too broad, they are meaningless

Overly narrow statements constrain the vision of the company

Mission statements should be changed less frequently than other components of the strategic plan

Business Philosophy

From its beginning, the company has been an extension of Anita Roddick's personal philosophy and convictions. In her 11 book, Body and Soul Profits With Principles, she states, "I hate the beauty business. It is a monster industry of selling unattainable dreams". Roddick decided early on to contribute to social and environmental change through her company. Her inspiration for producing natural cosmetics came primarily from her travels in Third World countries where she observed women caring for their bodies with substances such as cocoa butter, aloe vera and rhassoul mud. She noted that these women used cosmetics more for cleaning and protecting their bodies than for the pursuit of renewal, beauty, and sexuality. "Anita Roddick visualized a market of women in developed countries who possessed these same countercultural ideas and would be attracted to cosmetics that embodied such values". Her intent was to create a line of cosmetics that required little processing, created minimal waste, and whose profits helped the disadvantaged - especially women living in marginalized areas. Ms. Roddick has often stated, "Let's face it, I can't take a moisture cream too seriously. What really interests me is the revolutionary way in which trade can be used as an instrument for change for the better". Her environmental, social, and political values are reflected in The Body Shop's Mission Statement below

§ "To dedicate our business to the pursuit of social and environmental change.

§ To creatively balance the financial and human needs of our stakeholders, employees, customers, franchisees, suppliers and shareholders.

§ To courageously ensure that our business is ecologically sustainable meeting the needs of the present without compromising the future.

§ To meaningfully contribute to local, national and international communities in which we trade, by adopting a code of conduct which ensures care, honesty, fairness and respect.

§ To passionately campaign for the protection of the environment, human and civil rights, and against animal testing within the cosmetics and toiletries industry.

§ To tirelessly work to narrow the gap between principle and practice, whilst making fun, passion and care part of our daily lives."

Leadership Style

1. Conservative

From the introduction, we know that the performance has begun to suffer

Buy cheap leadership term paper

under Jacks style of leadership. It is mainly due to the personality of

Jack. He is a quite conservative person who has a tendency to maintain a

state of affairs without great or sudden change. Also, his style of

leadership is task and production-oriented. Task-oriented leadership

tends to emphasize task effectiveness. So, from the case, we can see

that he would turn down the subordinates suggestion whenever new ideas

come. Jack seems to define role and tell people what, how, when and where

to do various tasks only. On the other hand, Jack isnt a

relationship-oriented leader as he doesnt emphasize the building of

relationships with employees. Accordingly, Jack cant maintain a good

relationship with his subordinates. In his mind, he thinks that there is

no equality status between the superior and the subordinates. He would

highly respect the superior order without questioning. Thus, we can see

that Jack is very loyal to Carfax Corporation and works hard to follow the

company policies and procedures and the orders of the managers above him.

Under such leader, the performance of the financial section has begun to

suffer. Due to his conservative personality, the tendency to face changes

is very low. When sudden changes occur and as the same time the upper

doesnt give guidelines immediately, Jack cant handle well under this

situation. Then the flexibility and imagination in facing different

situations tend to absolutely low. Because his task-oriented leadership,

he always neglects the new ideas and unresponsive to change.

Mostly important, Jack doesnt realize the importance of staff

motivation. Subordinates think that the budget in their section is

comparatively lower than other department. As a result, they feel they

are underpaid and overworked. Overwork implies that the shortage of

workforce. And underpaid mean that the workload is greater than the

payment for it. As Jack has such easygoing manner, considerable

dissatisfaction in the department is resulted and everyone thinks that

Jack is just a puppet for management.

. Team Work

Not only have the conservative personalities caused the financial section to

suffer, but also he has neglected the importance of team work. Team work

means that two or more people who interact with an influence each other

towards a common interest. Financial section is actually a team work.

However, from the case, we can see that Jack doesnt manage his

subordinates to be a team work. Instead, he looks them as labors. He

only orders his subordinates what to do and how to do without any

subordinates ideas. Then it just like a factory labor who is in the

assembly line does a task within the instruction and guidelines. On the

contrast, an effective team can facilitate cooperation and improve

employee morale. So, team work can increase job satisfaction. Also,

implementing work teams allows managers to redirect their energy toward

bigger issues such as long-term plans. Furthermore, if the manager can

move decision-making vertically down to teams, it allows the organization

greater flexibility for faster decisions. Because team members are closer

to those problems, they are more familiar with the situation and can

easily solve them. For this reason, team work performance is higher than

the same job achieved by the same individuals working alone. Due to

Jacks style of leadership, direct participation of subordinates in the

financial section is nearly absent. If the subordinates can have more

direct participation, they would be more understanding and supportive of

organizational decisions. As the direct participation is so low that the

subordinates feel that Jack never really pushes hard enough for a more

substantial slice of the budget.

As a result, the dissatisfactions among the subordinates occurred. Then

the turnover rate and absenteeism may be high under Jacks style of

leadership. Inefficient and inefficiency may be resulted. In this way,

the performance for financial section has begun to suffer under Jacks

Style of leadership.

HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS

Joseph Stalin once said that the death of one man is a tragedy; the death of a million is a statistic. The Turkish government has exceeded this statistic by violating the human rights by killing over five million human beings during the 0th century. Now I will be informing you the facts about the human rights violation that has been going on in Turkey for the last couple of decades, and I would like to start by reading you the first two articles of Universal Declaration of Human Rights, so you could have a better understanding and be able to analyze in a better way the significance of human rights all around the world. On December 10 148 the general assembly of United Nations approved and announced the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and they stated the first two articles as "all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brother hood. Everyone is entitled to all rights and freedoms without distinction to any kind, such as, race, color, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.

Unfortunately the country Turkey doesn't have a very clean history record on the concept of human rights, especially for the last fifty years there has been a significant amount of human rights violation took place against the right to life, the right to personal security, to freedom of expression, to freedom of association and demonstration and to freedom of social and economic rights. I will briefly explain these concepts so I would like to show you some statistical facts about these violations that took place in Turkey. This is the summary table of Human Rights Violation in Turkey during the year of 00. Now you can see how many individuals that were murdered by unidentified assailants, the number of people that were taken under detention, or died or disappeared during the detention and you can see the number of TV channels, radios, newspapers, journals and publications that were closed, suspended or banned by the Turkish government. You can see the number of individuals including several journalists who were prisoned just because they expressed their thoughts and this number is nearly 500. There is also violations regarding to labor rights, 501 workers were fired from their jobs because of political or economic reasons. Now I want to remind you that these violations occurred in 00 only, there are of course a lot more of these events on the previous years. Especially some of these facts are pretty shocking. In 00 there were nearly 1000 student who were given punishment to suspend from education because they wanted to learn their own mother language. 6 individuals were prosecuted because they wanted to name their new born children in their mother language, and such examples go on and on.

Now I want to talk a little bit about the statues of Kurds in Turkey. With 5 million population, Kurds are the largest ethnic group in the world without a nation. Today more than 5 million Kurds live in the boards of Turkey who makes up one third of the whole Turkish population. Kurds has been facing excessive discrimination by the Turkish government in education, employment, politics, publications and language. The statistical data that we just discussed mostly implies to the Kurdish population in Turkey. Now these are some pictures of the Kurds here who were killed because they didn't want to give up their Kurdish ethnic identity, you can also see the Turkish soldier standing there with a big pride.

Write my Essay on Human Rights Violations for me

In conclusion it is obvious that there is a big problem of human rights violation in Turkey and it really contradicts with many articles that are in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. As I mentioned before every single individual is entitled to the rights to life, right to peace, right to freely express their thoughts, the bottom line is all humans are born equal and they should be treated equally. Thank you.
