During the late nineteen hundreds most companies hired their employees at a young age. In return employees would remain with the company throughout their entire career, and often retire at the age of sixty five. This strategy aided in job security, employee loyalty, and long-term benefits. This was better known as the ?womb to tomb? employee. In the twentieth century most employees started out working for a company in the mail room or as a courier. Companies believed employees needed full knowledge of departments to advance within the company. Once an employee gained knowledge through experience, they would eventually advance to supervisory or management positions.

Later in the twenty first century, technology changed the values of companies and employees. Economic distress has also aided in the loss of benefits, job security, and work ethics. While twentieth century workers earned their positions through loyalty and dedication to hard work, twenty first century workers where place in more immediately. Twenty first century workers where placed in higher positions from skills they have accumulated through education and previous employment. ?Managers are often hired outside the company for their vision, ability to achieve results, or their ability to motivate people? (Carlson, 00, p.4).

Through the transitions of these centuries the employee and the job industry changes constantly. Individuals from the twentieth century earned advancement by remaining loyal to the company. Later in the twenty first century employees are not as loyal, because they are always looking for faster advancement, and looking for bigger salaries. These later employees tent to have more knowledge of the constant changing industry. Through both centuries there are business ethics that worker can benefit and learn from.

populations including their size, growth, density, distribution, and rates of birth,

marriages, and deaths. The three best demographics of indicators of countries

level are life expectancy, literacy, and infant mortality.

Cheap University Papers on geography

Life expectancy is the most important demographic indicator. This shows

how long people are averaged out to live. Life expectancy also shows if the

people are healthy. The reasoning to this is that people live longer if they are

healthy. When people live longer this shows that a country takes good care of

the people. They have many doctors, clinics, and hospitals. Also the population is

larger. This viewpoint says that if people live longer and they have children who

live long, the population grows and stays sort of at a steady point. Life

expectancy is important because of these reasons.

Next is literacy, another very important indicator of demographics. Literacy is

the ability to read and write. This is very important because it shows how well

educated the people are in that country. In some countries they don't offer

school up to a certain age, or for women. This just gives them very little

opportunities to succeed in life. People who are educated and study in college

make a good salary per year. This helps the economy and the country to be

worth more money. This is called a high standard of living. The united states is

known to be a high standard living country. Literacy is important because it helps

our country and makes it a better place to live in.

Last but certainly not least is infant mortality. This means infant death, how

long the infant lives. In some countries infants don't even live up to the toddler

years. Abortion is another way of infant mortality, which the United States has

plenty of unfortunately. This has a major impact on health and decisions, if you

have a healthy house hold and habitat your infant has a very good chance of

living. Many teens have abortions, which are not good at all and should be

thought out more because it is not the child's mistake. Taking good care of

infants is important. And again this has a lot to do with population. The more

infants die your population will decrease. This are some factors of infant

mortality.

In concluding there are many indicators of demographics and these are just a

few. Three of many very important indicators are life expectancy, literacy, and

infant mortality.

Our staff of freelance writers includes over 120 experts proficient in Medicine river, therefore you can rest assured that your assignment will be handled by only top rated specialists. Order your Medicine river paper at affordable prices with cheap essay writing service! I enjoyed the book Medicine River, by Thomas King as well as the movie, which was based on the book. Although there were profound differences between the two, they were both pleasantly constructed. Having been instructed to read the book first, I was able to experience the full effect of the story and the message that the author intended for his readers. Although the book and the movie clearly relayed the same story, I would've better enjoyed the movie if it had included more incidents from the book, such as the visit from Harlen Bigbear's estranged brother, and the 'bridge jump'. I also wish the producer would have incorporated the many flashbacks that the main protagonist, Will, had from his youth. For example, the letters written by his father to his mother; the stories about his mother and her best friend; and the relationship with his brother James, namely, the childhood pranks that they played on one another. I am, however, aware of the time constraints involved when producing a motion picture, and I realize that the script had to be somewhat altered considering the medium at hand.

I found the book to be easy, exciting reading because the story line was very realistic and easily relatable. This book flowed for me to a point when, at times, it was difficult to put down. Several scenes pleasantly caught me off guard and some were extremely hilarious, namely, the visit to Martha Oldcrow. I found myself really fond of the characters, especially Harlen Bigbear. Harlen came across as a sort of 'trickster', but a likable one. He was gentle, caring, and harmless in his own right. Will, the protagonist, was very likable as well. However, his character only evolved for me as a result of Harlen's unconditional and relentless friendship with him. In short, Will's character would've lacked without the likeness of a Harlen Bigbear. The character naming was also very ingenious. The Oldpersons, Prettywomans, baby South Wing, and others were interesting and clever last names that made the notion of identifying with the characters even more interesting and the reading, fun.

The movie was surprisingly good, as it was well scripted and directed. I particularly enjoyed the scenery as well as the choice of actors. The beginning of the movie was drastically different from that in the book with Will being cast as a war captive in another country. Also different in the movie is the fact that in the beginning scenes Will finds out that his mother passed, and doesn't make it to Medicine River in time for her funeral. With all of the alterations that were made in the script, I found it an interesting and nice addition when Harlen persuaded Will to hire ex-convict Clyde Whiteman as an assistant in his photography studio. The only change which I was not particularly fond of was the addition of Will's boss Ellen. Particularly, her persistence to continue in their affair, despite Will's disinterest. Overall, I really enjoyed the movie. However, I was thrown off guard by the order in which the scenes appeared compared to the order of events in the book.

What we need from you is to provide us with your detailed paper instructions for our experienced writers to follow all of your specific writing requirements. Order your Literary Analysis: "Catcher in the Rye" paper at affordable prices with cheap essay writing service! The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger, is a prime example of coming-of-age fiction. The novel was published in 151 by Little Brown and Company. Within its 14 pages, Salinger draws readers into the world of Holden Caulfield, a troubled adolescent searching for his purpose in life.

As the novel unfolds, the reader is brought back to a 150's time frame. The main character and protagonist, Holden Caulfield, is introduced. Holden is a student who has just been kicked out of Prep School in Pennsylvania and decides to go back home to New York for the holiday weekend. Once there, he embarks on random journeys throughout the city meeting new friends, catching up with old ones, and accounting it all within the novel. Throughout The Catcher in the Rye, the point of view remains first person.

In the exposition, the reader gains insight into the mind of Holden. At Pencey Prep School, it is clear that there is a definite difference between him and his superficial peers. Holden has a sharp wit, detailed observation skills, and sarcastic humor to underlie it all. He feels a general discontent with his life at that moment, and decides to leave school, in favor of returning home to New York City. Rising actions occur as Holden tells of his unusual encounters with NYC's general public, including a hotel operator turned bouncer named Maurice who tries to beat him up and take his money, and Holden's former teacher, Mr. Antolini, who tries to make a pass at him. Throughout all this, Holden essentially shuts off the world, passing immediate judgments on people and expressing his extreme dissatisfaction with his life thus far. A climax is reached when Holden spends the day with his younger sister and he finally takes a moment to look at his surroundings. He realizes that regardless of the obstacles he encounters and the fact that he's constantly changing, one thing remains constant his family. His family, especially his sister, remains the solitary thing that can truly make him happy in his world of internal despair. Holden narrates his realization in the last chapter of the novel as he watches his little sister Phoebe ride a carousel

I felt so damn happy all of a sudden, the way old Phoebe kept going around and around. I was damn near bawling. I felt so damn happy, if you want to know the truth. I didnt know why. It was just that she looked so damn nice, the way she kept going around and around, in her blue coat and all. God, I wish you couldve been there.

Write my Essay on Literary Analysis: "Catcher in the Rye" for me

In The Catcher in the Rye, the critical decision was made by Holden when he decided to leave Pencey Prep and go home to New York. His decision to finally get away from Pencey and all the superficiality that it represented got him started on the path to independence and individuality, which fueled the rest of the book. It was only after that choice was made was Holden able to start his life over again in NYC, free from the restrains of Pencey and all of its shallow influences.

1. "…struggling people who held ferociously to a heritage, culture, language, and land despite the odds posed them by the forces surrounding them…"

I chose this quote because it expresses contradiction to the values of youth in present time. By considering, there can not be any arguments about how the youth of today are on the verge of following guidelines that are already set fashion. Youth are far less than struggling to cling on to their heritage and traditions of their country but on the contrary, they strive to become what they are not. This quote gives me a bold sense of strong ambition of people who are confident on who they are.

. " I became aware of how we must care for each other all of this was encompassed in an intricate relationship which had to be maintained in order that life continue."

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on I Am a Pig

This quote reminds me of a buddhist expression that says human are animals that depends on each other. Nobody could survive without a fellow human. A restaurant owner would depend on custumers. Motorcycle chauffeur would depend on passengers. Shoplifters would depend on store clerk. In the end, everybody would have to live in harmony together, or else nobody would ever be able to survive.

. "…youth has a precociousness that is broken easily or made to flourish."

I like this quote because it sounds like my father. He had always reminded me how important it is to learn in this age. He would always mention to me about how I'm walking on a road and reaching a branch that leads to two different ways the right and the wrong. If I fail to do things that is right, I would also be diminishing my own future. On the other hand, if I choose the right path, it will lead me into a successful working life. Youth is a very sensitive age, if something goes wrong, it will destroy the future.

4. " They were to make another countless appeal on behalf of our people, to demand justice, to reclaim lost land even though there was only spare hope they would be successful."

I chose this quote because it reminds me of my very own quote for myself perserverence. I believe that if only you have the strenght and the persistent to do what u intend to do, you will succeed. Alike to this quote, showing strenght of demanding justice even with a bleak sign of success. I feel that perseverence is a quality that are rare in human beings. You can be successful, you can be rich but that doesn't mean you have perseverence nor persistent to gain what you've got. A goal is not fully achieved without having to struggle to it.

5. "…despite losing much of their land and surrounded by a foreign civilization, have not lost sight of their native heritage."

Reminds me of a thai movie called "Bangrajan", a historical movie about nationalism of thai people to fight for their country even if it means death. I find nationalism to be a very delicate rule to break. When you're eating American fast-food, you're betraying your own country's food! When you're buying Lorex watch, you're depriving your country's marketing. When you're playing games, you became a supporter to other country's economic. Whatever you do, you are very likely to bend the rules of nationalism. I find it to be rather admirable for someone to be able to stick to their native heritage.

Order your Compare and Contrasting creation myth charaacters paper at affordable prices with cheap essay writing service! A protagonist in a story is usually the main character. They interact in most parts of the story and are a big part of what you read. There can be other characters in the story that can conflict with the main character but you can tell which one is the more important. In the short creation myth, "The world on the Turtle's Back", and the two coyote stories, "Coyote and the Buffalo" and "Fox, Coyote, and Whale," there are many characters to compare and contrast to see the similarities or differences in their actions.

The most compatible characters from these stories would have to be the Coyote and the Left-handed twin. They are obviously very deceitful and sneaky in their own ways. For example, the Left-handed twin is always in competition with his Right-handed twin brother. Whenever his brother would work hard to make good, he would work even harder to make evil prevail. He always though of things to work against what his brother believed was right. The Coyote is the same way. He is very conniving and doesn't really pay much attention to those around him. He would rather do things his way without thinking of the consequences to come after.

These two characters also are the shadows or "helpers" to other main characters. For instance, the Left-handed twin would make no action until his brother would do something. Similarly, for the Coyote, in the "Fox, Coyote, and Whale" story, he would always support his friend, the Fox. He followed him to the places he went to look for his wife and encouraged him to never stop looking. They were both in a sense, shadows, of other characters.

The twin brothers would be an example of different qualities. They have nothing in common except from being born of the same mother. They disagree on everything and are very aggressive with each other when it comes to who creates the finest things. The Left-handed twin is very stubborn and doesn't stop and listen to anyone he believes is wrong, while on the other hand, the Right-handed twin is respectable and very truthful. He believes in what is right for the Earth and believes that lying is a sin. Although these two characters are very opposite, they can balance out the story in a good way because it would be too boring to just read one side. It's always good to hear both sides of the story.

Help with essay on Compare and Contrasting creation myth charaacters

In conclusion, the protagonist in each story plays a great part in understanding the meaning of the stories and getting the general ideas of the events that take place in the story. It's not always good to focus all your attention on one characters' view because you want to get the all-around opinions of each character even if it's not the main character. The Coyote really related to the Left-handed twin just because of his reputation of their reputation of being bad. The right handed twin related most to the Buffalo because the Buffalo was forgiving and also giving enough to give the Coyote his youngest cow. All these stories have great characters and even greater character point of views.

Order your escape from reality in The Glass Menagerie paper at affordable prices with cheap essay writing service! In The Glass Menagerie, it is very clear that there is a major struggle between all of the characters and reality. Amanda, Laura, and Tom are the three main characters that had this struggle. Tennessee Williams did a wonderful job describing scenes and using symbolism throughout the story to stress this struggle.

First, Amanda clearly struggles with the thought of facing reality for a couple of reasons. Amanda seemed like she was always living in the past. She always referred back to her days at "Blue Mountain." That was her little fantasy world. It was her escape from reality. She always told the story of her seventeen gentlemen callers, dragging her children into her fantasy world as well. She also tried to blind everyone from the fact that her children were not perfect, especially the fact that her daughter was cripple. For example, the word crippled was not allowed in the house. Those are really the two ways that Amanda escaped form reality.

Next, is Laura. Laura was an odd character. The author even expresses symbolism towards her as being different. For example, Jim O'Connor calling her "blue roses." Another example is the glass unicorn. Those are both very symbolic of Laura's peculiar manner. It's clear that blue roses or unicorns are not something that you see everyday. Laura knew she was different, mostly because of her disability. She didn't feel like she fit in with everyone else. An example of this is the fact that she dropped out of college after only a day. She didn't have any self-confidence and was far too shy to meet any friends. That is why she seemed to lose herself in her glass collection. The private little world that she lived in was surrounded by glass animals. She even brought up her glass collection when she was nervous with Jim. Her mind was really the only thing keeping her out of the real world, and from meting people, as well as her not going to school. In the end, her mind was her only disability.

Tom's escape from reality revolved around the movies. All we learn about Tom is what he thinks about his mother, his sister, and his job. Those are precisely the things in which he wanted to escape. Tom went to the movies to escape from Amanda and Laura, but also for that missing piece of his life. He said that there was no adventure in working at a warehouse and there clearly was none in the Wingfield house. He also hated his mother nagging him all the time, but that was his life. He escaped it, night after night, by going to the movies. That was Tom's way of escaping from reality.

Buy cheap escape from reality in The Glass Menagerie term paper

In conclusion, it is very clear that there is a major struggle between all of the main characters and reality. Amanda's main obsession was living in the past. Laura was too afraid or just too shy to even step out into the real world. Her distortion of reality was found in her glass collection. Finally, Tom escaped from reality at the movies. He had absolutely no adventure in his life, so he would pretend to be the characters in the movies. That was Tom's only sense of adventure. Those were the main points that were stressed throughout the story to show the character's struggle with reality.

Order your American English paper at affordable prices with cheap essay writing service! American English and British English are two main language subgroups of contemporary English. These subgroups have diverged some three hundred years ago. Today, there are present differences in pronunciation of vowels, some grammar differences like the u sage of the verb to have in the question. However, the main difference is in the vocabulary. The main reasons that caused these differences are the fact that British English has changed since that time, while the American has not. Then, there is a tendency in British English to turn the verbs into the weak one and finally, in both subgroups originated many new words naming new objects and these words naturally differ.

The American dialects have developed according to the geographical regions and social groups. Major dialect regions are the Northern, the Midland and the Southern. The Midland region could be divided into North Midland and South Midland. Differences are again in pronunciation, grammar and in vocabulary. Within these dialects there could be found features typical not only for American English. Simply, we cannot say that all American dialects have some common features different from those of British English. For example, the pronunciation of the letter r. Some germs of American dialects were probably brought by the Englishmen having settled in the North America. However, today it is not possible to find any direct correspondence among British and American dialects.

American and British English also differ in the pronunciation. This often helps us to distinguish between an American or British speaker. Nevertheless, one cannot exactly determine, how should be pronounced some word by the American or Englishman. We can find some groups of vowels like a or o that may determine speakers into several groups. These groups are not strictly corresponding to Americans or Englishmen. A little bit easier situation appears when trying to distinguish between American and British speaker according to intonation. The Englishmen give a longer word one heavy stress and several weak one, while the Americans often would give it a secondary stress. This appears, for example, in words ending in -ary, like military and temporary. In general, English tends to have equal spacing of stresses no matter what subgroup of English are we talking about. On the other hand some British dialects tend to have more reduced vowels than for example American English.

The differences between American and British English grammar usage are not great in grammar and syntax. Among the main ones belong the verbs have got in Britain and do have in America, where the Englishmen do not use the form have gotten meaning in American English have acquired. Differences also appear in using pronouns he, his, she, her instead of British one, ones. Then we can continue with difference in using plural in connection with public institutions in American English and the preposition on used in connections with the street instead of the British in.Cheap Custom Essays on American English

Finally, the most obvious divergences could be found in the vocabulary. Each country has developed in different nature and social conditions. Americans got mainly into the contact with Indians, Spanish, French and Dutch settlers and German immigrants. These groups of non- English speaking people enabled Americans to borrow many words from their languages and this formed the specifically American vocabulary.

The frontier spirit and the novelty of the American society encouraged Americans to experiment a bit with their tongue language. Americans probably tried to express their independence through the language usage. Nowadays, the difference between these languages is just a memory of very strong national feelings belonging to the past.

What is Love?

Webster's dictionary defines love in many different ways, "A feeling of intense desire and attraction toward a person with whom one is disposed to make a pair; the emotion of sex and romance. To have a feeling of intense desire and attraction toward a person (Webster, love)". Everyone at some point in their lives has experienced love, whether they were loved or have loved. Love seems to be the main underlying goal that we all strive for in our lifetimes. It is the one thing that we all, as humans, have in common. There are many different types of love family love, friendship love, conceptual love, and intimate love. Many people have a hard time finding words to express this intense feeling because everyone's experience and meaning of it is different. The thing is, that with love, it is not positive or negative; it seems to have its ups and downs. However, we still go throughout life searching for it, without ever giving up.

Family love is unconditional, meaning it is timeless, and everlasting. Family love, is the feeling when families share old time stories to each other. The great part of this love, is that when my family gets together on holidays, it is special to see the families that come from out of state to be together again as a whole family. It may even be the strict rules that a parent enforces, that a child feels are unfair. The thing about is love is you can be yourself, make mistakes, and you will always be forgiven.

Cheap University Papers on what is love?

The love shared between friends is similar to family love, but there are boundaries not to be crossed. These boundaries are different with each friendship, but are usually somewhere along the lines of, not messing with each other's boyfriends or bad mouthing behind each other's back. Friendship love, is the feeling that you know you have someone there to always talk to. Especially, about things that you could never tell your parents. This type of love lets me share my feelings to my best friend and know that she would never tell a soul. Friendship love, lets you share the experience of your first crush, first real love, or your first everything. This love, even makes you want to take the blame for a childish acts that your best friend committed.

Conceptual love is a love of material things, ideas, or characteristics. This love we feel toward objects, such as jewelry, flowers, and other material things. It also is the feeling of loving characteristic traits, such as kindness, humor, and features. Conceptual love is looking into a mysterious persons eye.

Intimate love is the love that we search for endlessly. We long to have someone care about us more than anyone has. The majority of us want to be married, and have families, which has become the American dream. Intimate love, is knowing that Mr. Right is out there somewhere and that with a bit of luck you will find him. This love is the most intense feeling out there; it is the tingle in a gentle kiss. Intimate love, is very tricky and can at times be mistaken for infatuation. You experience it when it is hard to even think about anything else. However, intimate love can be painful, and difficult to handle, when deaths, break ups and other crimes that have occurred.

This just shows the many types of powerful words that are in relationship to the word love, and how it can affect you. Love is a long road ahead of us, some of us find it and others do not. This poem is one of my favorites, it was written by my brother, I love how he shows his true feeling about love. "To love someone is to cherish them being there. And Never wanting them to leave, But also to give them space. And to understand there needs. Always tell 'um you love them and show them you care. Be sensitive to their feelings with grace. And always be there." (Brent Taylor) I think, in life people die of love or live because of love. Love should often be this way because it makes the world more passionate and extraordinary. Is said that love is ugly, and that is why it looks for beauty. Now you may know why, love is so difficult to define, because it is this and so more.

I found the introduction of this book, as well as the entire concept of the introduction to be extremely unique and very intriguing. I found it interesting that the very

first page states that as one reads the book, they encourage you to imagine that the

author is speaking to you, and the reader is able to speak back. I found this to be a very different and unique way of reading as well as interpreting the authors words. Throughout the first few pages, the introduction makes it very clear that the reader is not expected to comprehend everything he or she has read during the first attempt. In fact the book specifically mentions "No reader could retain one of these essays in her mind no matter how proficient her memory or how experienced she might be"(Bartholomae and

Do my essay on the achievement of desire CHEAP !

Petrosky 8). I was very relieved by this and I am glad they expressed this in the book.

I do realize however, that these stories are going to challenge my composition as well

as my attention span.

Throughout the introduction, it mentions an essay called " The Achievement

of Desire". I very much enjoyed this aspect of the book, because I was able to relate to both sides of the debate of Rodriguez's loss versus his gain. I appreciate the fact that the authors chose to summarize this story throughout the introduction because it gave me a better understanding of the types of stories I am about to read as well as the different

ways of looking at them. I also enjoyed how the authors discussed both sides of Rodriguez's options regarding his family, opposed to his education. I feel it gave the

reader a new perspective of what it means to create your own theory. It was not until I

read these arguments that I truly understood what the writers meant by taking a deeper

look into the story, and thinking outside of the box. I also enjoyed this story because,

like the authors said, I could relate to Rodriguez in some form. He was forced to make a difficult decision, and in his mind it was either his family, or the gain of knowledge.

Everyone in life has been forced to make a difficult decision like Rodriguez, and because

of this I understand that the writers of this book, not only want you to read the stories, but relate to them.

Another reason I found this book intriguing is because I was able

to understand that the reader should search for more then just the main points of the

story. The reader is not on a constant search for hidden meanings, or new interpretations

of stories. The essay is simply meant to be what the reader thought of it. I also found

it interesting that the words on the pages are not necessarily going to be self

explanatory, opposed to most books I have read in the past, it will take understanding

and comprehending the words in order to process your own theory. I found the ways

of reading discussed in this book are unlike any reading strategies I have experienced

in the past. The stories in this book are theoretical and complex opposed to books

that I am used to that are based on fiction and are less complicated to understand.

This proposed way of reading is designed to help you identify the ways in which

stories make its meaning, and taking each section step by step, underlining and hilighting

the important aspects of the stories. They do not give a sense of how one goes

about analyzing an essay, or a specific strategy to reading. It is difficult to give a

prescription, as different stories are based on different aspects of meanings, different

ways of reading, and different relationships between theories.

Towards the end of the introduction, the writers mention a series a comprehensive essay questions. I believe they will be the most challenging seeing as though I have never experienced ways of reading like this before. I am not going to gain the answers to these questions by discovering the main idea or the climax of the story.

I will discover them by working through the story little by little, however, I am looking

forward to taking on a new challenge, and opening my horizons to new and challenging ways of learning. I believe that reading against the grain will truly force me to stretch my limits by introducing a new and thought provoking way of interpreting the authors words. Although the writers of this book do not discourage you from seeking other people's opinions on these stories, the authors clearly state that the majority of the knowledge one will gain is not going to come from notes on paper or any sort of expert. It will come from truly understanding the story as well as comprehending your own theories. The writers make it clear that "it is not about what the stories mean to other people but rather, what

the stories mean to you"(10).

Of all the sins staining the American conscience, the decimation of the Native Americans and the systematic destruction of most facets of their way of life weighs no heavier. James Welch's historical novel Fool's Crow traces the life of one Lone Eater as he comes of age and his people and his way of life are ravaged by disease and the onslaught of the American nation's Manifest Destiny. Focused on the universal human condition and the perspective of Native Americans, Welch teaches us the history of a culture and a people that were laid as sacrifice upon the altar of the American nation by the basest instincts of human nature.

The Lone Eaters customs and beliefs surrounding marriage are similar to those of white society in late 1800's and in some ways they are distinctly different. The husband is expected to be the provider in Blackfeet society. Thus, some modicum of wealth and assets as well as an ability to hunt is seen as necessary before taking a bride. Fast Horse makes us aware of this fact at the outset of novel before the raid on the Crow camp when he tell White Man's Dog that "Many women already find me attractive but their fathers know I am without wealth (7)." Wealth in this instance is horses, which are the most valued asset amongst the Lone Eaters. This point is further reinforced when Heavy Shield Women says to White Mans Dog just prior to him marrying her daughter "'And what about you, young man? Now that you are rich and powerful, it is time for you take a wife (104)." Marriages are, if not totally arranged, at least subject to parents approval. Wanting to marry Red Paint, White Man's Dog implores his spiritual mentor Mik-api to assist him. Mik-api reminds him that "First, you must go to your father and mother and tell them of your intentions (105)." After much consternation over White Man's Dog taking a bride who is of such a needy family his father says, "Your mother and I give you permission, son. You may propose a marriage to Red Paint and her family (106)." The two had not ever spoken to each other a week before the marriage, but this was of little consequence. The families exchanged gifts, and the marriage and festivities took place (107). All this happened within a weeks time and on her wedding night Red Paint brooded over the idea that "Less than seven sleeps ago, marriage had been the furthest thing from her thoughts (108)." Many tribal men as they became older and more influential within the tribe took multiple wives. White Man's Dog talks at length of his fathers third wife early on in the novel (87).

Cheap University Papers on The Meaning of "To His Coy Mistress"

Lone Eater society was a patriarchy and women were generally in a subservient position. Men fulfilled the role of provider; to be a good provider in Lone Eater society meant in the simplest sense that the husband had the ability to hunt and feed his wife or wives and their children. Much as in white society, women were things to be acquired and gained. A man had to prove his ability to be a good provider in order to gain women. This attitude is seen clearly in Fast Horse's remarks at the outset of the novel when he advises White Man's Dog to "go to your father's lodge and dream of all those women you desire. With the Crow horses they will be yours and you won't have to mount the dogs (8)." Women tended the home. Red paint is seen at work "rubbing brains and grease into a deerskin to make it soft (64)." Later, Rides-at-the door, wishing to smoke with his son, addresses his wife as "Woman!" ordering her to "Bring tobacco (5)." The power structure within the tribes was dominated by men. This fact is illustrated when Welch tells of the All Friends society meeting upon Yellow Kidney's return as "The women who had served the men were gone (7)." They did not stay to hear Yellow Kidney's retelling of his misfortune, but rather served the meal and left the meeting. During his retelling the reality of how devalued women were in Lone Easter society is further reinforced when Yellow Kidney tells of how he raped a young women while hiding from the Crows during the raid. Though she was a Crow woman and not of his tribe, it is still a clear illustration of how he regarded women. Though they were subservient to the men their work as artisans was highly valued. In Yellow Kidney's absence Red Paint used her fine craftsmanship to help provide for her family. Her particular skill was with moccasins. Welch tells of how "She was good and her elaborate patterns were becoming the talking of the camp (5)." Amidst the small-pox ravaged camp and land seizures of the whites later in the novel her work is admired still as she "wore a dress of elkskin trimmed several rows of elk teeth (8)." They were unquestionably in a subservient position, but there were instances when men regarded them with respect. In the wake of Rides-at-the-door discovery that his younger son was having an affair with Kills-close-to-the-lake grants her her freedom and banishes her from his house sending her to be with her kin (4). Rides-at-the-door shows decency and mercy toward his unfaithful wife.

Loyalty versus Justice, Montana 148 is the issue of a family torn between loyalty to one another and obeying the law to follow justice. In the novel we see that Wesley Hayden is forced to make this choice, and is not helped by the pressure of his dominating father Julian and his wife Gail, but Wes takes the right steps of pursuing justice and doing what is right.

"He looked exhausted….his face was pale", here David notes how big the load is on Wesley, emotionally and physically, and how he is having trouble with the issue of justice versus loyalty. Throughout the novel we see the load that Wesley has to carry. Deciding whether to put the accused and guilty behind bars or to remember that the accused and guilty is his own brother Frank and to be loyal to him, he has to put the loyalty aside and serve justice. Wesley has trouble putting aside the loyalty to his brother, "Maybe she's simply got it wrong", and implying that Marie has little knowledge of a doctor's procedures. Gail puts the guilty conscience onto Wes, and he takes the role of investigating his brothers accusations. Wes knew from the start that this wasn't going to be easy and realises that it is just "simply too hard", is now stuck and cannot get out until the problem is solved. When Wesley realises that his brother is guilty, loyalty was yet still an issue "He didn't want to go to jail. Not here in town", he yet again saves his brother the embarrassment from the Bentrock community, by turning his own basement into a jail. Even though we see Wesley is still trying to be loyal to his brother, he chooses the difficult, but more justified side and arrests his brother Frank

By arresting Frank, Wes must confront his family members, especially his dominating and powerful father Julian. This is when Wes finally finds the courage and stands up for himself and ignores his father dominating and abrupt orders. Julian, still being controlling, has obviously chosen loyalty over justice. "This is your brother here. My son!". This comment made by Julian, doesn't really have anything to do with family loyalty, it comes from arrogance and trying to save the Hayden family name in the Bentrock community, as your son being locked up for sexual harassment, is bound not to look too good. "My god. My god, boy. Stop this now. Stop this before I have to". Julian has no beliefs in justice and is only thinking about himself and his favouritism to his son Frank and not what it is doing to Wes. "I cant let him loose. Not and live with myself". Wes stands up for his rights and beliefs and for the first time goes against his father's wish and does what he believes is the right thing to do. Wes carries on and erases Julian's orders and goes on to pursuing justice.

Even though Wesley makes the right choices, by following justice, it never really pays off for him in the end. In the novels epilogue, we note that Wesely never really gets congratulated for his hard work and efforts and gets the tribute he deserves. The town of Bentrock never had to decide whether Frank was innocent or guilty, "You see, I knew- I knew! I knew- that Uncles Frank's suicided had solved all our problems", this comment made by David, brings to our attention, that by Frank killing himself really did solved everyone's problems. Wesley didn't have to march his brother into jail, there would be no trial and no one would have to make the hardest decision of all, if he was innocent or guilty. In the end, every one knew what would really happen to Frank, but it never really mattered, because once again Frank got the big send off and his image was restored, just because he was a war hero and yet again Wesley's was not. Deep inside, Wesley still felt the pain and anguish of these events, which in the end resulted into cancer, and took the better of him. Homer's, The Odyssey vs. The Coen Brother's, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"

Old stories are the best that is precisely what the Coen brothers determined somewhere while completing the script for O Brother, Where Art Thou? This huge hit, that has won more than a few awards, is based on Homer's epic, the Odyssey. It is an interpretation of the Odyssey set in the 10's Mississippi. It is Homer in the deep south. Watching it you will find numerous hilarious comparisons made throughout and if you are familiar with the epic at all you will find the similarities not only clever but the Coen brother's have actually taken this classic literature and made it understandable and enjoyable. A Coen brother said "We sort of combine the Three Stooges with Homer's Odyssey". The twists and turns the stories offer are numerous, exciting and enjoyable. Both renditions include a character who is trying desperately to return to his wife and family after a long absence; he is rarely at a loss for words and has travelled far and endured many hardships and strange characters including seductive sirens, an ominous Cyclops, and a flood, and like most men, he is doing it all in the name of love.

O Brother Where Art Thou's main character, Ulysses Everett McGill (Get it? Ulysses? Roman name for Odysseus, the main character in the Odyssey?) and his posse of two other penitentiary, chain gang escapees are driving along when they see three beautiful women washing clothes at a river. As in Homer's Sirens episode, the three women behave seductively toward the men. Everett, Pete, and Delmar are mesmerized as the women sing. After the three men drink whiskey from a jug, they pass out and when Everett and Delmar awake, Pete is missing. This scenario is similar to The Odyssey where Sirens including Circe the sorceress provocatively attempt to lure the characters to their ruin with their hypnotizing song. The characters of these two stories are tempted but do not follow their temptations.

In a poignant scene Everett and Delmar go into a town to get supplies. Here they run into a seemingly normal Bible salesmen. Big Dan is huge man with one googly eye, as the other eye is patched. Big Dan eventually gets manic, goes on a rampage, (paralleling The Odysseys scary Cyclops) knocks out both Everett and Delmar, and steals their money and their car. This incident, of course, is taken from the Cyclops episode in The Odyssey where Polyphemos, the Cyclops, bullies and takes advantage of the characters. The difference in the tales is that Homer's Cyclops eats his prey.

Help with essay on Homer's, The Odyssey vs. The Coen Homer's, The Odyssey vs. The Coen Brother's, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"

The symbolism of the water in both tales are interestingly linked. Homers character, Poseidon has a need to constantly steer Odysseus's ship into dangerous spaces as he determines the course by drastically changing the wind to continuously put the men in treacherous situations. They find themselves in precipitous situations that include battling narrow channels, dodging deadly rocks, and hurricane-like winds that throws their sailing vessel into various perilous dramas. In the story O Brother Where Art Thou it offers the constant reminder of an upcoming flood which has the entire cast on their feet to beat the deadline. Both aquatic disasters will continuously attempt to the taunt the lives of all of the characters and can ultimately end life. The constant threat of a watery grave looms over all heads.

Throughout the movie and towards the end of the movie a cow is seen. He offers protection to the movie characters. The end of the movie this same cow is seen atop a floating house. This bovine is in direct relation to Zeus and his constant need to protect Odysseus. Zeus is the Alpha male heard, just as this cow is. They are both, throughout the epic and movie, protectors from evil.

In The Odyssey, Hephaestus, Aphrodites husband, was a doer of good deeds. He was always there to lend a hand to whomever needed it. Just as in O Brother Where Art Thou's African American singer, this character was extremely helpful to Everett and his boys. He gave them the gift of music and song which in turn gave Everett the ability to win back his wife, Penny who is waiting for our hero - at the end of the road. The interesting thing about these two good-doers is they both had a handicap. Hephaestus was crippled because he fell when Zeus cast him out of heaven. The character in O Brother Where Art Thou was considered inferior because of his color and race (Mississippi in the 10's).

Man against the world in perilous times. Both stories are enjoyable and some similarities arise but the fact remains the time frame and the locations and of course, the characters are very different. O Brother Where Art Thou introduces the non-literature loving to a classic epic written thousands of years ago. The interest that this movie sparked with its silly plot and goofy characters and song, and the fact that it won numerous awards including a golden globe leads me believe that this ancient story is still entertaining to those who take the time to read it. The Odyssey was the first and probably the greatest adventure story of all time. Each age has had its translator of Homer each finding in him the peculiar weather of that age. The Elizabethans found him a renaissance man, Alexander Pope found him to be an Augustan, Mathew Arnold, a Victorian. It was perhaps inevitable that T. E. Lawrence and W. H. D. Rouse, should have found him the father of the modern novel.

Fultex is a medium-sized producer of athletic uniforms, sportswear, sleepwear and a variety of fabrics. The company emphasizes the cost management therefore it can provide high quality products with low cost. Fultex's business expands from team uniform to retail business, and now Fultex is considering entering into department stores business and design additional clothing lines to enlarge its market.

The Board of directors has already voted to approve the acquisition of $81 million external funds and top management considers this project absolutely essential for Fultex to succeed in increasing the market share, though it is not expected to improve the firm's profitability in the near future.

Reaction

Cheap University Papers on Fultex

R.Craig Harrof, a board member, sent a memo to Elizabeth Bethea, the chief financial officer of Fultex, explained that Fultex is highly over leveraged based on the comparison of the firm's current, quick, debt, D/E, TIE, FCC ratios to the industry average. The company should not borrow to fund the $81 million expansion.

Elizabeth Bethea discussed the memo with William Gibbs, a vice president, that she is far from convinced the firm is over-leveraged and she believed that the firm has capacity to incur debt because of reasons.

1. We are more profitable than typical firm

. Our risk is low because we are well diversified

. We have customer loyalty

Anthony Barro, a major stockholder with 6% of the firm stock, prefers that Fultex issues debt to raise the fund needed because he feels that Fed will do everything to avoid recession and inflation will finally increase. On the other hand, most economists feel that Fed is very much concerned with containing inflation and economic downturn is quite likely. However, Bethea realizes that economic forecasting is an inexact science and majority opinions can easily be wrong.

The financial options

Stock Option. New common stock at $ per share included $ per share floatation cost.

Bond Option. 15-year debentures bearing 10% interest rate callable after eight years at a price of $1100. The indenture will not allow Fultex to issue any higher priority new debt, paying dividend in excess of 70% of income and it also carry a sinking fund provision.

Combination Option. The 50-50 mix of stock and bond option

Moreover, the firm might have to alter the method of production to stay alert for the possibilities of innovation and efficiency. The best guesstimate is that $10 to $0 million fund is needed and Fultex has roughly $5 million of liquidity at present.

Impact on Shareholder control

If the company raises ,700,000 common stock and formal shareholders do not buy more stock to maintain their position, the new stock option will definitely diminish shareholder's control.

If Fultex issues $81million bond, shareholders control will still be the same because there is no impact on number of equity.

Quantitative Analysis

Cost of financing

Issuing common stock. In order to finance $81 million additional fund needed, we need to issue ,700,000 shares at the price of $ per share, with $ per share being the flotation cost, which is the one time cost of financing and equals to 6.67% of the fund received.

Issuing 15-year debentures bearing an interest rate of 10%. This interest is higher than the cost from issuing common stock, we have to pay it on an annual basis and we have to start retiring the principal at the end of year 5.

Borrowing from the investment bank. In this case we don't know that rate of interest charged but normally it should be higher than the interest on bond and we have to repay it at the maturity date.

Ratio analysis

Fultex is a very healthy business. It has current ratio of .6 and quick ratio of 1.. Even though these numbers are less than industry average, it shows that the company's liquidity is good. Harrof also mentioned that Fultex is over leveraged when compared to the industry, but in fact its debt ratio of 50% is considered reasonable.

Impact on company leverage ratios in 16

For bond option, debt ratio will increase from50% to 56% and TIE will be reduced from 5. to .7. These ratios are above average yet acceptable. In stock option, debt ratio will fall to 6% and TIE will increase to 6.7. These are comparable to industry average. Combination option will reduce debt ratio to 46%, TIE of 4.76

Problem Statement

Fultex is in a very competitive industry. Its main strategy is the reputation in quality and styling. Since the company strategy is to expand into a wider range of the consumer market, Fultex needs to get an external fund of $81 million to develop a new R+D plant that will increase its market share. Fultex's board of directors has approved this additional fund needed already. However, there is a conflict between a board member, the CFO, and a major stockholder. The board member does not want Fultex to incur more debt, while the major shareholder does not want to lose his control, and the CFO believes that Fultex has capability to borrow.

The problem in this situation is 'How should Fultex finance its 81 million expansion and be in the best interest of all?'

Alternative

1. Issue ,700,000 common stock at $ per share.

. Issue $81 million 10% 15-year callable bond.

. Issue ,700,000 preferred stock at $ per share

4. Combination of a 50/50 mix of stock and bond.

5. Borrow $81 million from investment bank.

6. Ask Barro to commit $5 million and issue $56 million10% 15-year callable bond.

7. Borrow $15 million from investment bank to stay alert for possible innovation.

8. Educate Barro about the economic situation

. Educate Harrof about using the industry average.

10. Defer the expansion until we know the economic situation.

11. Lease the manufacturing facilities

1. Remain status quo

Recommendation

Fultex should issue ,700,000 common stocks at $ per share to finance $81 million expansion project because of the following reasons

1. This project is critical for Fultex success in increasing market share. Moreover, this project will support the strategy of providing good product quality and styles with relatively low cost.

. Cash outflow is the minimum.

. Due to economic forecast, recession is likely to occur and interest rate is expected to fall, therefore it is not good to borrow now.

4. Barro's interest of the firm will remain at 0% as he wishes. To maintain 0% control over the firm, he'll need to hold 4.14 million shares (additional 14,000 shares). Therefore, he only needs to put another $4.6million.

5. The company can access to equity market because it has been quite successful in its business area.

6. Current financial position is quite attractive to the investors

7. The debt ratio will reduce to 6% which is approximately the industry average and it will satisfy Harrof. Nevertheless, we must educate Harrof that we shouldn't rely on the industry average because every firm is unique.

8. Stock option incurs low risk.

. Stock option increases the financial flexibility of the firm, if they need more investment in the future.

Order your hello there paper at affordable prices with cheap essay writing service! In Britain by 1850, democracy had begun to take on an effective face. However throughout the UK, equal representation did not exist, and it was the wealthy aristocracy that had any form of political power. Even in this elitist system there existed much corruption and bribery. Changing social attitudes lead to a series of acts being passed over the span of 80 years which would eventually lead to suffrage -the right to vote- for working class men, and eventually women, bar a few exceptions. In a true democracy in the purest sense of the word, there must be freedom of speech, regular elections, secret ballots and equality between genders and people. In he mid-nineteenth century, this was not the case. Historian Sydney Wood suggests that "the parliamentary system of the 150s was not democratic. It was not meant to be. Democracies were regarded as being at the mercy of the ignorant people unfit to possess power. It favoured the wealthy in a number of ways." Prior to the passing of the first reform act in 18, Britain's political system had not changed since the sixteenth century.

The First Reform Act of 18 increased the electorate from 45,00 to around 65,000. Every man owning property worth £10 (per annum) now had the vote. Prior to the Act's passing, there were no standard laws that said who could vote. Before the Act, there were two types of constituency; counties and boroughs. The passing gave rise to a greater number f MP's. The Act corrected some anomalies of the voting system, and it made the working class more politically minded.

William Gladstone and Benjamin Disraeli were politically competing for credit as to who lead to the passing of the 1867 Second Reform Act, in order to gain support of working class voters. It was seen by many in parliament that in order to coincide with social changes, the voting system had to be updated. With the passing of the vote, the electorate became around .5 million, with working class men from towns and cities allowed the vote. All householders with one year's residence got the vote, or those living in residence worth £1. Overall, one in three men got the vote. However, the vote was not yet afforded to those under twenty-one, or women. The constituencies were reorganised, and some smaller ones were disenfranchised. The greatest change that this Act made was granting vote to those who occupied the boroughs. Also, the increased electorate meant that the parties had to nationally organise themselves.

Before the Ballot Act was passed in 187, voting was carried out in the open, which meant that many votes were dictated by intimidation, bribery and corruption. The Act allowed voting to take place in private. The Third Reform Act of 1884/1885 gave the vote to working class men in rural areas, increasing the electorate to around 5 million. Still, around half of the male population was excluded. Those excluded included soldiers living in barracks, and sons still living at home. There was still no mention of women getting the vote.Cheap Custom Essays on hello there

The Representation of the People Act passed in 118 allowed all adult males over the age of twenty-one who had a six month residence to vote. A large step however, was giving women over the age of thirty (provided they were householders or university graduates) the vote. Plural voting, which had been a thing that took place among the aristocracy, was minimised to two, and even then applied only to university graduates. As a result of Suffragist pressure, women were on the same footing as men in local elections. The 18 Representation of the People Act finally put women on the same level as men in terms of voting, and the First-Past-The-Post system was confirmed. Historian Morrison feels that "As a consequence of the growing electorate, politicians were forced to abandon the nineteenth century principal of laissez-faire in favour of state interventionism."

Another criticism that can be aimed at British democracy in the mid-nineteenth century was the lack of fairness. Elections were held in the open, and so many people were bribed to vote for a candidate, or forced to. The passing of the Ballot Act in 187 changed all this, affording the voters to place their vote in secret. In densely populated areas the secret ballot made a difference. M Willis says "Since the passing of the Ballot Act we have never had the slightest trouble at any election that has taken place in London…" However, in the boroughs and counties where the populations were sparse, the boxes were still open to view, defeating the purpose of the Act.

In 188, the Corrupt and Illegal practises Act was passed, limiting the amount of money that a candidate could spend upon their election campaign.

Taking into account the rising number of voters, the second part of the Third Reform Act, The Redistribution of Seats Act reorganised the seats available, and increased the number of MP's in Scotland.

Before say, the passing of the First Reform Act in 18, often MPs were chosen by the wealthy landowners. Following the passing, and MP still had to own land. BY 1885, the number of MPs increased from 65 to 670, and universities still elected MPs, but using proportional representation, another of democratic governing. The 111 Act, which allowed MPs payment, was very important in making parliament more representative, because before this, only the wealthy could afford to be Mps, but this legislation meant that working class men could become MPs. The Parliament Act did truly alter the face of parliament.

The Parliament Act of 111 also changed something that before the act had been a large part of parliament. The House of Lords, whose positions were hereditary, lost much of their influence in terms of government spending and taxes. Instead, the decisions lay in the hands of the popularly elected House of Commons.

By the early 100's, there were three national parties to vote for. These were the Conservatives, the Liberals and Labour. Labour was a party that represented the working classes, Conservatives were middle/upper class, and Liberals were not unlike the Conservatives, but according to historian Henry Pelling "In small towns and country villages the ministers and the lay preachers were the backbone of Liberal strength." The introduction of the Labour party gave a party that the working class could support, giving them a voice in parliament.

Not only did the working class become better represented, they became more aware of politics and their country, as a result of social advances. Access to information nationwide had improved. In 1870 in England and 187 in Scotland, education acts were passed, which required children to attend school. This act also led to the development of libraries in many communities.

The building of nationwide railway lines meant that tabloid newspapers came into existence since news could now travel across country with ease. Railways also meant that MP s could freely travel over the country, making speeches. In this way, the people were far more aware of current events in the world of politics.

Party agents were paid to organise publicity. These agents worked alongside branch associations. They were places where drinks were served and billiards played. Their purpose was to boost morale and increase support, as well as provide volunteers. In the Liberal parties, one of these branches grew and expanded into the National Liberal Federation in 1887. This branch served as a radical challenge to Whig leadership within the party. There was a similar branch that existed in the Conservative party The Conservative Central Office. Unlike the NFL though, it mainly followed the orders of the party leadership. In 1881, the Primrose league was formed, and it seemed invaluable in maintaining party support. H Pelling observes that this support came from "…the visit to village feasts, the chat in the village schoolroom, or pleasant friendly musical evenings in the winter." In other words, providing such hospitality and warmth to the constituents kept support. The massive increase in the electorate called for this parry organisation to exist.

It can be strongly argued that in Britain by 18, democracy had indeed been widely achieved. There was gender equality in terms of voting rights, for those over the age of twenty-one. There were regular elections, and voting was now free of corrupt activity, due to a secret ballot. MPs were now paid, enabling working class to be able to afford to enter into the House of Commons. There was a range of parties to choose from, and electoral districts were reasonable in size as well as roughly equal to each other. The House of Lords had far less influence over taxation and government spending. The various acts had improved the face of British democracy.

However, there were still flaws in the system. Those in the House of Lords got their position mainly by inheriting it, rather than voting. The basic democratic principal of 'one man, one vote' was still not truly enforced, since university graduates were entitled to two votes. Women, whilst having equal voting rights as men, still did not have social equality. They had received far lower wages than men did, and many careers were restricted, since it was still seen as a woman's duty to tend to domestic life. Finally, in relation to the electoral system -such as the benefits of proportional representation over first-past-the-post- still remained unsolved, and mainly not addressed. Donald Morrison suggests that "The development of liberal democracy had been slow and piecemeal. The system which had evolved by 18…had in place most of the apparatus necessary to satisfy the democratic aspirations of the nation. Nevertheless, the essence of a democracy is that of a system of government which promotes and encourages political change from below. Thus issues such as electoral reform, devolution and the promotion of equality continue to be debated…as part of our ongoing democratic political culture."

It can be concluded that by 18, Britain was not purely a democracy; however, the acts and reforms that were passed over the decades prior had aided in bringing Britain close to it.
