A Fortunate Life is an autobiographical novel centred around the life of A. B. Facey (184-18), the classic Aussie battler. Widely acclaimed, it has been described as a microcosm of the earlier life of Australia in its personalised accounts of events close to the heart of Australian cultural identity such as Gallipoli, the Great Depression, and early rural settlement.

A Fortunate Life was first published by the Fremantle Arts Centre Press in 181, and has been reprinted in several other editions since then, as well as being adapted for the stage.

Faceys manuscript provides a unique insight into the writing of a work that has become an Australian icon. The author had no formal education and this is reflected in the simplicity and honesty of Faceys handwritten notebooks. Little annotation occurs throughout the work, other than the authors emendations, giving the manuscript a vivid coherence A Fortunate Life is an autobiographical novel centred around the life of A. Aristotle believed that virtue grew from virtuous actions. In order to achieve happiness, an individual needed to be aware of his or her own actions and learn how to make the right choices. According to Aristotle, three types of actions exist involuntary actions, nonvoluntary actions, and voluntary actions.

Involuntary actions are performed due to ignorance, or because one is forced to do so. For example, slavery would be considered an involuntary action, because slaves were forced into their actions, and had no choice. However, involuntary actions may change into voluntary ones. Many children who do not enjoy going to school are coerced into doing so by their parents. However, once they reach an older age, continuing their education becomes a choice of theirs, a voluntary action.

Nonvoluntary actions are those that are performed in ignorance, when an individual is not aware of what is right or wrong. Therefore, anyone who commits such an act, is not held responsible for their actions, although they may receive blame or praise. For example, a person who is intoxicated while driving happens to get into an accident and kills an innocent bystander. The person's judgment was impaired, and they were not aware of their actions, however, society blames them for what they did. However, if the same person who was intoxicated had performed a courageous act without knowing so, they would have been praised by others.

Voluntary actions are those that are performed with compulsion or no coercion. A person who is emotionally outraged and performs an act out of anger still acts on his own feelings, and therefore the act is still considered voluntary. A person who gives to the poor, or chooses to rob a bank does so out of his or her own choice. These actions require individual choice, and once one begins to make rational decisions, he comes closer to attaining virtue.

We have all dealt with that feeling of fear and loneliness. Well that was what I definitely felt the first day of my cultural experience. I was picked to be given a chance to take part in the 001 session of TBW. Which that stands for Teen Westward Bond. This is kind of like a summer camp except you travel all around the United States in just weeks. You never stay in one place longer then a day and a half.

So the first day of the trip I remember saying my goodbyes to my family and saying how I would see them in three weeks. Then after they left I stopped and looked around at all other people that were going to be joining me on this trip. I remember the feeling that I felt when I sat down on the bus with my group for the first time. I didn't know any of them. But that soon changed. During this trip I made so many friends and long lasting friendships that I will never forget. During this trip I really thought I was going to miss my family and be homesick the whole time but that wasn't the case at all. Not only during this trip did I find out that I could handle being on my own. But I also learned a lot of skills need to take of ones self. First the first time on this trip I learned how to clean up after my self and be responsible.

Through this experience I also learned that there is more to life then just shopping all the time and having all the new "fashions". I learned that getting to learn about other places around you and getting to know all different kind of people is way more important, then any clothes. I mean during this trip I got to go to so many cool places that most people only hear about. We visited the grand canyon, shopped in San Francisco, Looked at the stars in New Mexico, and visited the largest bat cave in Utah.

So this experience was definitely once in a life time thing. I am happy that I took advantage of such a "eyes opening experience". I mean I really don't think there are any words that I could say to describe how much fun that I had on this trip. But I do know one thing ,that is if I am ever given another opportunity to do anything like TBW, I will be the first one there

Cheap University Papers on "Crack and the Box"

"Crack and the Box" is a very interesting story written by Pete Hamill that compares the addiction of crack to the addiction of watching television. I firmly disagree on Hamill's thought process about the comparisons of these two totally different things. Where he came up with this strange comparison is definitely something that would be interesting to try to understand. His main point is to make readers believe that watching television is practically the same as doing crack cocaine. His statement that states "television usually absorbs its viewers the way drugs absorb their users," I believe, is merely his opinion. I firmly disagree on this statement, because television is a form of entertainment and the use of drugs is definitely unknown as being entertaining. Hamill states many reasons why these things are similar, but he never seems to have a back up for his thoughts. He compares how the television can take someone out of the "real world," just as cocaine takes someone's mind frame into another world. This comparison is a bit ridiculous. First of all, television never seems to take me through a journey into another world. I merely just watch the screen and still reside in my normal state of mind. I think Hamill includes random things like this in his works to help support his opinionated mind. He tries to inform or persuade his readers the wrong way. Most people do not completely believe something that does not have references or back ups to solutions. Hamill should have taken his thoughts into perspective and given his readers a way in which they could completely believe his comparisons. I think Hamill was completely out of his mind when he decided to write on how television is similar to crack. It amazes me that he included his perspective on the subject, but never really showed his readers how he backed his thoughts up. Some may believe every bit of what he says, but personally I think Hamill went a little overboard. I firmly disagree with his synopsis on how these two dramatically different subjects could actually compare to one another.

An epic can be defined as a long narrative story recounting a quest of the quintessential hero, in his fight against evil. In the film, The Lord of the Rings Two Towers and in the poem, Beowulf these epic thematic concepts are evident. Firstly, both epics take place in a vast scope of land. Beowulf travels from Geatland, to the land of the Danes, then back to Geatland. Two Towers takes place in numerous places of Middle Earth, from the Fangorn Forest, to Isonguad, to the plains of Rohan, and then to Helms Deep. Secondly, both tales include intense battle sequences in which many good people must die. The description of Grendal's attacks on the thanes is extremely gory and gruesome. He killed many innocent lives, including Hrothgar's best friend. The bloody battle at Helms Deep also exemplifies this. The men, elves, and ents defeat the orc army, but only with the sacrifice of many virtuous people, including the elf captain. Theotin's son also dies while helping defend his kingdom against evil. Next, the evidence of a quintessential hero is prominent in both stories. Beowulf and Frodo both sacrifice their lives for mankind. They both risk their lives by performing an almost impossible task. For Beowulf it is his quest to defeat the raging Grendal, and for Frodo it is to deliver the sacred ring, without it falling into the wrong hands. Both are courageous and succeed against all odds. Furthermore, the element of good always triumphing over evil is quintessential. Beowulf (the ultimate good) fights and defeats Grendal, and his mother (the ultimate evil.) In the battle of Helms Deeps, the men of Rohan, along with the help of elves and ents are triumphant over Sauroman's army of orc. Epic thematic parallels are prominent in both the film, The Lord of the Ring Two Towers, and the poem of Beowulf. The quest to save mankind culminates in the triumph of good over evil.

Listen Up! Listening and How To Practice It

By Robert Bacal, M.A.

Possessing effective listening skills can help, whether in business or everyday activities, to present you as a strong, sincere, outgoing person. Effective listening can only come about with very disciplined training of the mind. It is hard to sit and listen for long periods of time to one-person control the conversation, and at the same time focus on keeping your mind from wondering. There are two ways to improve your listening ability focus your attention and communicate your understanding.

Focusing your attention on someone while they are speaking is the hardest to accomplish. This can only be done with extensive practice. The practice should be done in the privacy of your own home, do not ever be so rude as to practice on a friend or even a stranger without them knowing. This skill should be enhanced at home with a television or radio. The objective is to keep loose thoughts from wondering into your mind and taking over. Once you feel that you can go a few minutes with very little interruptions you may begin trying it while others are speaking to you. You should notice that people would respond to you positively.

Communicating your understanding can be done a couple of different ways empathetic listening and reflective listening. These skills can also be practiced but they may be practiced on friends and family and even business partners. Empathetic listening is done by listening to the conversation and responding with sympathy or happiness for the situation. Reflective listening is repeating briefly what has just been spoken to you by another person. This can help the speaker to know that you have just heard and understood what they were saying, it will also let them know if they were able to effectively get their point across.

I chose this article because I have been complemented in the past on my ability to listen. When someone, even a child, is speaking I try my best to give him or her all of my attention. Sometimes it is very hard to do, but this article has shown me that I am a reflective listener and I was able to receive pointers n how to improve on what skills I already possess.

The short story, "The Lottery" is a real shocker. The harsh and cruel ending, grabs attention and adds to the unique way of hiding its true intentions. It is a story/movie full of irony and symbolism. The author, Shirley Jackson is trying to satirize our own society, in which men are selected for the army by lottery.

The setting of the event in "The Lottery" is a very effective trick. It tricks the reader from the real truth and instead positions his or her mind to a happy surrounding. "The morning of June 7th was clear and sunny, with the warmth of a fine summer day." Who would have thought that the clean innocence of a fine summer day would be shattered by a bloody murder in a matter of a couple hours? Similarly, consider the draft awhile back, many young people were called into war to defend our country. It may have not have been what he or she wanted, but in reality there was nothing they could have done.

The villiagers' names in the story show a lot of symbolism and irony. (The children first show the innocence of their young approach to the actual reality. It seems that the lottery is just plain fun to them.) The name Hutchinson, or "Hutch" means "a pen or a coop for an animal." Tessie for example was "caged" in, as she was the lucky lottery winner to be stoned. To me the most important name, is "Adams." The Adams' are practically the first in everything considering their last names starts with an A. Ironically, they are also the first in line in stoning the "lucky" lottery winner. Also, examining the lottery equipment shows symbolism. The black box, for example, represents the death and their tradition. It symbolizes the belief of the villagers, as it's their only hope. The pieces of paper inside the box symbolize the villagers' lives. Much like, "The draft." Some years ago, the draft was basically a list of names in alphabetical order, first names first. Referring back to "Adams" as they were the first to pick in, "The Lottery." After I had read this story several times, I actually understood and realized how it was so similar to how men were selected for the army by Lottery. In my words, "It's the name of the game."

I feel the quick beating of my heart because of excitement as I saunter through the spacious amusement park. Standing there staring in awe at the rides, where millions of people are lined up. I hear the swooshing sound of a roller coaster as it whizzes by, and the screaming people makes me even more thrilled. I see kids here and there walking hand in hand with their parents and have this eager smile on their faces; they were all excited and keyed up. Some of the parents are behaving like kids all over again, sometimes looking more thrilled and eager than the kids. Looking at them, especially the little ones smiling makes me glad; I don't really know the reason why. I guess it's because they are eye-catching and adorable. The site of clowns and cartoon characters, like Mickey and Minnie, makes kids gasp in amazement, and it makes me feel ecstatic seeing them react the way they did. Deep inside of me, I feel the urge to follow each child in every line and wish that I could watch them take pleasure in every ride they take. I wonder how each would react to the excitement and thrill that each ride can offer. Having to see those kids enjoy themselves, and scream of excitement stirs me.

The amusement park is a great world of fun, laughter, and excitement. It is a fantasyland where the sun is always shinning. Happy faces, lively places, not a soul of grim and sadness. Even the buildings and structures are laughing. It is like an ant colony, where you see long lines in every direction. People move like ants orderly forming lines in every direction towards every source of crumbs or sweets. For a while I feel like I am in a completely different world. A world where sorrow or grief do not exists. A world of bright faces, long lines, and excitement. It is a dream where you would not want to be aroused from.

As I look around me, I start to wonder if there is any other place in the world that is so much entertaining as this. Everybody seems to be transformed as soon as they step through the entrance gate. It is as if none of the problems of this world ever exists. People look so jovial; I would hate to think what it is like for them after they leave. Standing here I think to myself, it is places like these that allow people a way of escape from reality, a means for everyone to forget all their problems, relax, and enjoy themselves as if there is no tomorrow.

In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. The sentence structure is written in a certain way to make it seem like if David is doing everything with a very fast pace.

Pelzer uses a variety of metaphors and similes to explain his family and their actions. "She watched him as if she were a cat" this give the reader an idea of how Mrs. Pelzer was, she was a person who never trusted his sun David. Always looked for a reason to punish David. "His devious smile, and snake like eyes"; that showed how David's little brother Russell watched David's every move to see if he's doing his chores, if not he would go tell his mother on David and enjoyed watching David getting abused.

The whole novel has a connection between the reader and writer. He inspires everybody to never give up and always try to do the best, whatever the consequences. The mother verbally abuses David all the time in the novel. And intense abuse is happening thru out the whole novel.

The tone in the novel is a cry for help and desperation. He is always trying to beat his mother at her own games; that means always have a way which will make mother stop beating on him as fast as possible.

The authors theme is to always have courage and never give up no matter the matter is, if somebody has dreams, then try to reach those dreams. David Pelzer's dream was the "courage to survive."

The significance of the title is very important. David's mother started calling him an "it" because she didn't considered him a person not even as her son.

" That day I vowed to my self that I would never, ever again give that bitch the satisfaction of hearing me beg her to stop beating me." "In the darkness of the garage I closed my eyes dreaming I was a king dressed in the finest clothes, eating the best food mankind had to offer". " In my dream, I flew through the air in vivid colors. I wore a cape of red…. I was Superman". These quotes explain that David had dreams to live and to be freed. He wanted to enjoy life at its fullest and enjoyed things that he had never had.

this is one of the best, but saddest books that I have ever read. There is so much reality in this book. It brought me to a realize things that I have never known before. It is extremely sad that something like this really did happen. I would diffidently recommend this book to anyone.

Pelzer relies on language that was developed from a childs viewpoint he tells us in the authors notes, resulting in a straightforward This happened, then this happened, and this is how I felt approach.

Please note that this sample paper on abuse is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. Youth stress how music is only for listening purposes. Teenagers seek music as an outlet from problems in life, yet parents believe that rap and rock music is to blame for teenagers problems.

I believe that rap, hip-hop, and rock music is a negative influence on today's youth, but only to a certain extent. I feel it all depends on the mind of that young boy or girl. I feel as though if a parent raises a child right and discusses with the child what is appropriate behavior and what is not then music will have little affect on that child. If a parent is a role model for that child then they don't have to worry about the child imitating what he or she sees or listens to through music. However, if the child is not taught, I feel as though they are going to look for that in music, and there is where I see the problem If a child is not raised to know what is right and wrong, he or she might listen to some lyrics saying it is cool and to sell drugs, and then they go out and do it. On the other hand, if that child taught to know that drugs are bad for you, listening to those lyrics telling you that they are good, will not have an affect on them because it's already been imbedded in their minds that their bad. The same thing goes for the way superstars dress. If a child is taught to respect their body and dress appropriately then it doesn't matter what a star is wearing, that child is going to dress according to the way he or she were taught. I strongly feel as though rap, hip-hop and rock have little influence of teens, because parents are the biggest influence in their lives and their going to go by what they've been taught. Being a teenager myself, I find that when I listen to music, I'm not interested in so much of trying to be like the superstars singing the song or trying to act out the lyrics that I hear. I'm mostly interested in listening to the music and enjoying it. I find that listening to music is relaxing.

There is a big dilemma on rap, hip-hop, and rock music and superstars. Adults believe that the negativity that is incorporated into the lyrics and music of artists today is constantly being a negative influence on youth and young adults in today's society. However, youth still argue that this music does no such thing. The debate over the influence of music has made rap, hip-hop, and rock a very controversial subject. While many argue it's a negative influence, others still believe it has no influence at all or that

Gatsbys greatnessis a matter that demands our attention. Inescapably, it is caught up in the narration of his story and

that narration is entirley through the voice of Nick Carraway. It is, after all, Nick who makes Jay Gatsby into the

Great Gatsby. Why is Nick so drawn to teh man who is his neighbour? What drives a solid Mid-westerner, with apparantly

old fashioned values, to write a lyrical account of a man tragically obsessed with a youthful love affair? It may be because

of the American Dream that draws Nick towrads Gatsby. F. Scott Fitzgerald believes teher to be two variant definitions of the

American Dream. The first is an idealised version which preserves the sense of wonder, and of limitless possibility at the

heart of what American means. This America is an embodiment of human potential, free from any limits set by past experience.

It is this aspect of Gatsby that Nick Carraway admires. The second version of the American Dream is a materialistic version,

in which the process of creating ones self is directly linked with getting rich. It is the corrupt means by which Gatsby has

achieved wealth and his vulgarity by the way he presents it that provokes Nicks scorn.

Gatsby has recreated himself, shedding the past and abandoning his parents. Gatsbys intention was to create an ideal self,

held together by hope and wonder. However this ideal is taintedby the criminal means he employed to attain his wealth.

Gatsbys greatness, for Nick Carraway, resides in his capacity for hope and strength of his desire. Daisy is the immediate

object for that desire. Gatsby, like a knight in Arthurian romance, has taken Daisy as his grail, the sacred object of his

quest. A hero sets out in search of some valued object, and although he encounters many adventures along the way, he remains

single minded in his persuit. This is in direct contrast to the other characters in the play, who tend to drift around and

their life has no purpose or sense of direction like Gatsbys does.

Gatsbys life ends in tragedy, as he is murdered in a case of mistaken identity. Nick believes the world to be full of

bored individuals, lacking a sense of purpose. Gatsby however, is an exception. His life is full of purpose, desire and hope.

This is waht makes Jay Gatsby great in the eyes of Nick, which makes him apper great to us as we as the reader see through

Nicks eyes.

A Surge in Money Sent by Mexicans

One of five Mexicans gets money from someone employed in the Unites States. And at least 100 Mexicans have been fed, housed, and educated from it. About $14.5 billion have been sent by Mexicans this year. This money no only help the lower class people to eat, it also locates them in the middle working class in Mexico. Roberto Suro, director of the Pew Hispanic Center says that Mexicans could reach to $5 billion by the end of the decade. But there's nothing to celebrate about this. It only means that the Mexican economy is not going well, and a lot of people have to leave.

Immigration experts said that about 450,000 Mexicans came illegally into the United States last year. And the risk of crossing the border does not make an impact on them in their idea of getting into the country. Payment exceed stated public works budget and they are used to build roads, schools, and recreational parks .

In the past years sending money to Mexico has become easier and more affordable for immigrants. Companies cut fees on the transactions and some American banks had allowed people to open accounts where the can take the money right way from tellers machines.11/01/00

Littlest Immigrant, Left in Hands of Smugglers

They were small enough to cross the streets, but no a border. But they were. Jose Velasquez, who was six and his younger brother Sergio, who was six. They were being held by a coyote paid by their parents to bring them to the United States. But the massive security made it harder for these two kids and for many immigrants to cross over the border even after the attacks on September 11, 001.

Their parents were living illegally in the United States and they could afford to return home. They had to decide either have someone stranger take care of their kids or pay a smuggler to bring the kids into the U.S.A .Their dad said that if the kids stay in El Salvador, he would lose them, because of the distance. So that's why he hired a smuggler to help him to get his family together. American officials and the media prevent immigrants that they exposing themselves to a lot of abuses from the smugglers, those people don't care about who they are bringing in, they are only worrying about the money they are making. And now they are looking at children "as an important exploitable population." Mexican authorities had send home more than ,800 unaccompanied Mexican children under 17 in the last year.

The amount of minors crossing the border had increased because the majority of immigrant had pass with no problem.

I am writing this memo in response to the website that you have created to market eBay. IN order to best market a company as prolific as eBay, your ideas must be innovative and original yet easy to follow and understand. The website that you have created using a single marketing strategy is a good one, and I will proceed to give you a detailed evaluation of the marketing techniques that you employ in this website.

eBay is a very unique company, in that they do not provide the product mix themselves, rather they make it possible for their members to do so. The main goal of this company is place utility. eBay is known for their ability to allow people from across the world to interact together in order to get the things that they want and need at the best possible price. They can do this without leaving their own home, which makes life easier on every one. By using a total-market approach, you do a good job in attracting everyone to use this company to do one thing buy and sell to fulfill their needs. This website effectively helps all people to become a part of the eBay community by

o Facilitates in discovery of product mix by allowing members easy access to any and all products available for sale

o Creates step-by-step procedures for selling items ensuring that all members have the chance to profit by easily listing their own items for sale

o Allowing for personal selling by allowing members to contact each other for any additional information they request about the products

o Separation into categories makes it easy for members to browse around and may entice them to purchase an item, or sell one of their own

Since eBay's profit is obtained according to a percentage of the goods bought and sold through the company, the more people buy, the more profit for the company. This is an obvious concept for any company, but it is special for eBay because there is very little money invested by the company, so more sales means pure profit. The only portion of the site that you have created that can be fixed to make it easier for interactions to take place is the 'categories' section. If it were less wordy or more space were allotted for it, then the site would have some of that much needed white space which makes customers feel less overwhelmed.

Overall, the marketing strategy you have implemented in this website is superb. You make use of every aspect of the marketing approach and facilitate the buying and selling process between people across the world, with minimal expense for the company, and maximal profit.

Gorse is a dense, spiny, dull greyish-green shrub that typically grows to about three metres in the Pacific Northwest. It has small leaves that are generally shorter than its conspicuous spines. From early spring, yellow pea-like flowers develop in clusters on the ends of its branches becoming hairy black seed pods by late summer. A typical shrub produces about 8000 seeds annually. Gorse seed can lay dormant in the soil for up to 40 years and still germinate. Soil disturbance during road building and tree harvesting present opportunities for the successful germination of seed.Gorse originates in western Europe. It was introduced into New Zealand by settlers and sold by seed merchants and nurseries for private cultivation until the 180s. Since then it has spread to cover more than three per cent of the total land area in New Zealand, including significant agricultural areas and forest plantations. Gorse is probably New Zealand's commonest and most costly weed. It is rarely economical to control gorse on grazing land by using conventional means and much marginal pasture land is reverting to gorse cover.

Control of gorse using biological control agents began in 18 with six agents having been released so far. This technique is unlikely to provide the type of control achieved with herbicides. Rather, the aim is to reduce the growth rate, seed production and density of gorse.

Gorse Spider Mites were released into New Zealand in 18. They are tiny red mites that live in colonies, spin webs and feed on gorse foliage. Where many mites have been feeding, the foliage becomes pale yellow or white, and flowers are aborted. research shows that when mites are present in large numbers, they cause considerable reduction in the growth of gorse shoots.

Gorse thrips were released in New Zealand in 18 to complement the activity of other biological control agents. They attack the foliage of gorse by piercing the stem and sucking out the plant cell contents. Gorse damaged by thrips has a mottled blotchy appearance.

The original strain of gorse spider mite which came from England did not do well in some areas. Five new strains have since been imported from Spain and Portugal. Although the different strains of gorse mites look alike, their responses to environmental conditions are different, which affects the success of populations in different climates. The new strains are expected to perform better in warmer, wetter climates than the original strain.

It's no new fact that guys think differently from girls. From an early age we see that girls are more likely to play tea and dress-up versus tackle football. What is it that sets us apart from each other? Well, to start men and women process information using different regions of the brain. We also differ in the way we interpret and distribute this information. Lastly, women are superior in determining the mood of any given person based on body/face expression. Using this and much more, we can safely say that men and women have different cognitions of certain stimuli.

Contrary to popular belief, men and women do not necessarily interpret information in the same area of the brain. When doing an experiment to test this hypothesis, both sexes were given a PET scan and asked to think of nothing while the testing was in progress. Men were prone to think of sex and football, which can be linked to the temporal limbic system that has a history of being linked to aggression and emotions linked to action. Women on the other hand made word strings and such with the cingulated gyrus which can be linked to complex expressions of emotions. By utilizing this information, the scientists at Haier PET-scanned twenty-two males and females while doing math. They concluded that men and women who do math equally well, just with different parts of the brain.

Women, who are said to be superior at judging character, seem to be. Evolutionary speaking, this is just as well. Women need to know when there's a sense of danger so that they may escape. i.e. angry boyfriend. Men don't seem to use the area that women do when they look at a person's face and body language to find out what's wrong.

Though we process information differently, there is sometimes an extreme since of bias that comes along with this. Women are saw as weak and inferior to men, but as mentioned earlier, they have a greater since for telling when trouble is afoot whereas men do not. Men, who are evolutionary said to be the stronger of the sexes, sometimes have trouble telling when a person is happy or sad it they do not express it verbally. Though this is true most of the time, it is hard to say weather or not the cognition of a male actually senses it, but does nothing because of the lack of the nurture gene that all women share.

Cheap University Papers on Grey Matters: Guys vs. Girls in Processing Information

Men and women are different entrees in the plate of the human species who believe and process information separately from the other. Both men and women have different gifts that allow them to communicate and express ideas, even if through different means.

In the short story "Young Goodman Brown," the overall theme is man vs. evil. The story contains religious imagery, such as Goodman's wife being called "Faith". Husband and wife become one in marriage spiritually and physically. Goodman struggles internally with having faith and being a good man, as Hawthorne uses this allegory with their names. Young Goodman Brown questions his beliefs and takes a journey to question his own spirituality and beliefs.

Goodman leaves his wife to make this trip, with his wife representing faith. Hawthorne uses the act of Goodman leaving his wife to show Goodman is questioning his faith in an allegorical sense. The forest allegorically represents the choice to take the journey of evil. The further Goodman travels into the forest, the deeper into his evil consciousness he dwells in. Hawthorne uses the night to show that Goodman was in darkness spiritually and not enlightenment as the day represents. I really liked how Hawthorne uses the fellow traveler to represent the evil side of Goodman. This fellow traveler actually is Satan trying to tempt Goodman Brown to a witch meeting. In the process, Satan undermines the young man's faith in his beliefs and his community, which he possesses.

Hawthorne uses the staff that the fellow traveler is carrying in an allegorical way. He is comparing Moses throwing down his staff before Pharaoh and the rod the fellow traveler carries, as the staff of the devil against Moses and God. The staff also represents the universal struggle man faces between good vs. evil. As Goodman Brown calls out three times for Faith, his wife, to come to his rescue, he sees a pink ribbon from Faith's cap that has fallen down from the sky and catches on a branch of a tree. He ultimately loses hope and faith, in an allegorical sense, that his wife is caught up like the rest of his community in evil.

The climax of the story is when Goodman Brown laughs after the fellow traveler, or Satan. After what Brown sees as Faith's apparent union with Satan, Brown laughs, as the fellow traveler did. Goodman Brown becomes aware of the opposition of good vs. evil and is transformed at this moment. At this time, one could say Goodman Brown is possessed by evil, while accepting that the world is being taken over by sin. Young Goodman Brown has the vulnerability of youth, having given into the temptations of Satan. He has been led step by step to be suspicious and question all he had believed in. Now, Young Goodman Brown cannot fit into his community spiritually, emotionally, or psychologically and he will feel like an outcast.

Ultimately, Hawthorne allegorically uses the fearful dream at the conclusion of the story. As Young Goodman Brown travels deep into his unconscious, he dwells on evil thoughts that become a part of him. Finally, life can be like a fearful dream in its exposure of the truth. A fearful dream can be a mirror of truth about one's life.

I agree that slave resistance in early American society was unorganized, poorly executed, and not representative of the overall attitude of slaves during this time. African American slaves were brought over from there home land without even an idea what was to become of there future in North America. The middle passage killed off so many of the Africans and there was no emotion shown by he Europeans, they probably thought they were going to a place were there would b e short to come. The African American slaves were wrong, they were not prepared for the hell, torment, and persecution the whites were going to put them through. Black resistance began in the 17th century when indentured servants weren't as available and the need for labor works was in demand, the Africans started to be shipped to the New World. Arson , poisoning of whites owners, striking out at the whites, and running away were some of the ways the Africans resisted against the grasp of the white colonists.

Striking out against the African's Masters were the first signs of resistance from the slaves. This explosion of such rage was a suicide attempt, most Africans who choose this type of resistance were usually hung the same day. In 1741 Clerk of the Market proposed, "if any Slave should in Time of Market behave him or herself in any insolent abusive Manner, he or she should be sent to the Work-house, and there suffer corporal Punishment (55)." Rules like the one stated in the last sentence did not stop their resistances toward the white masters. The most logical and lethal method of all the resistances was poison. Poisoning was hard to prove who did it or who made it. Africans who were caught administering the poison, or making were subject to death. There was also a reward for Africans who turned in there fellow friends and workers, and many did turn friends in turn. They could then start saving money to pay for their freedom in the future.

A highly destructive and difficult to detect method of resistance is arson. The Africans would burn the barns, houses, and rice fields to irritate their masters. By doing this they hurt their profit and their name. The consequences of arson was death, but arson was hard to be convicted of unless you were seen starting the firer. A slaved named Sacharisa was burned at stake for setting her masters house on fire in Charleston in 1754 (5). Arson and poisoning usually only involved less than three people, but there were many uprising against the master's and colonies that involved great numbers of Africans.

Black slaves confronted the question daily whether to accept or deny, submit or resist, remain or flee. Black resistance which began in the 17th century included arson, poisoning, strikeouts, and runaways. It was all unorganized and poorly executed, many deaths became of there failure. African Americans in the 17th century went through torment, but this was just the beginning of along time of torture and hatred from the white colonists.

ʑRalph Ellison's Invisible Man is the story of an educated black man who has been oppressed

and controlled by white men throughout his life. Throughout the novel, the narrator is on a search

for his true identity. During the novel, the narrator values several important things which shape his

identity as well as his identity. The theme, values can help shape a persons identity, can be

explained through the elements of setting, characterization, and plot.

The setting is the first element that brings out the theme. The story takes place in Harlem,

New York and New York City. It is in those cities that the narrator experiences life as a whole. He

attended an all black college in which he was expelled from a little while later. After being kicked

out he rents a room at a Men's House in Harlem. He also stayed with a woman named Mary after

he was kicked out of the Men's House. It is here that he rests and revives his spirit.

The characters in the novel is another element that brings out the theme. For example,

Bledsoe, the president of the narrator's college, betrays him. He sends the narrator north with false

recommendation letters. Emerson is the son of one of the college's wealthy trustees. He tells the

narrator that Bledsoe has betrayed him. He expresses sympathy for the narrator, but he remains to
