object for that desire. Gatsby, like a knight in Arthurian romance, has taken Daisy as his grail, the sacred object of his

quest. A hero sets out in search of some valued object, and although he encounters many adventures along the way, he remains

single minded in his persuit. This is in direct contrast to the other characters in the play, who tend to drift around and

their life has no purpose or sense of direction like Gatsbys does.

Gatsbys life ends in tragedy, as he is murdered in a case of mistaken identity. Nick believes the world to be full of
