CHICAGO - They became the brunt of baseball jokes when their roster was chopped to pieces after winning the 17 World Series. They were targeted for contraction -- the baseball term for elimination -- when their fan base became nearly nonexistent. They play in a football stadium, not a true ballpark.

Yet, this most unexpected and unheralded of teams -- the Florida Marlins -- is returning to the baseball mountaintop.

The Marlins punched their World Series ticket Wednesday, defeating the hard-luck Cubs -6 before ,574 shell-shocked fans at Wrigley Field. The Cubs, who havent won the Series since 108 and havent reached the Series in 58 years, were defeated by an 11-year-old franchise that will be chasing its second title in six years.

Ive waited for this for 1 years, and Im going to the World Series with a team that nobody expected to be in the playoffs, said catcher Ivan Rodriguez as his Marlins teammates celebrated inside the cramped clubhouse.

Said the Marlins 7-year-old manager, Jack McKeon, who took over in May when the team was six games under .500 ``This is the biggest moment of my career.

Owner Jeffrey Loria, champagne dripping from his new National League Champions cap, said, ``Im not pleased. Im ecstatic. What could be better? This is just fantastic for the fans in South Florida and for players who never quit.

Just as they had done in five of their previous wins this postseason, the Marlins had to rally to defeat the Cubs on Wednesday. But the two-run hole they found themselves in during Game 7 was nothing compared to the task they faced when they fell behind three games to one in the NLCS.

Rather than wilt, the Marlins struck back with three consecutive wins to become just the fourth team in league championship series history to recover from such a predicament. And they had to beat the Cubs and their two best pitchers -- Mark Prior in Game 6 on Tuesday and Kerry Wood in Game 7 -- to do it. And beat them on the road.

Heart, thats the only way to explain it, said Marlins left fielder Jeff Conine, who caught Paul Bakos fly ball for the games final out.

Conine was a member of the 17 World Series team, too.

I dont care how many times you do it, its always unbelievably special, Conine said.

Now the Marlins must wait to find out which team -- the Boston Red Sox or New York Yankees -- theyll meet in the World Series. Those two teams have their own Game 7 showdown tonight, with the winner taking on the Marlins in Game 1 of the World Series on Saturday in either Boston or New York.

The Marlins delivered the first blow Wednesday.

After being outscored 1-0 in the first inning by the Cubs during the NLCS, the Marlins rang up three runs at the outset in Game 7 when Miguel Cabrera homered off Wood to left-center with two men on. It was Cabreras third home run of the NLCS, a record number for a rookie.

The lead proved short-lived when the Cubs answered with three runs of their own in the second inning off Marlins starter Mark Redman. Those runs roused the crowd out of its dormancy.

Damien Miller made it -1 when his ground ball scored Eric Karros, but it was Wood who tied it with a two-run homer to left that was hit so far and so hard that Marlins left fielder Jeff Conine merely turned his head to watch it land in the bleachers. Wood is no slouch with the bat, having hit six home runs previously in his career. But none carried as much oomph as his one in Game 7.

Not only did it awaken the Wrigley crowd, but seemed to have the same effect on the Cubs.

While Redman got bottom-line results in Game by limiting the Cubs to two runs over 6 / innings, he was nowhere near dominant. He survived despite allowing eight hits and walking four.

In Game 7, he didnt even survive to the fourth. After Sammy Sosa was hit by a pitch, Moises Alou blasted a towering, two-run shot off Redman that made it 5-. Unwilling to risk further damage, manager Jack McKeon began deploying the reserves, replacing Redman with Brad Penny.

And the Marlins, who had won five of their six games this postseason in come-from-behind fashion, returned to their comfort zone after falling behind in Game 7.

Pinch-hitter Brian Banks and Luis Castillo each reached on walks as Wood began to tire in the fifth. Ivan Rodriguez doubled to left, driving in Banks and extending his hitting streak in the postseason to 11 games. The RBI was his NLCS-record 10th. Cabrera tied the score when his ground ball scored Castillo. The Marlins re-gained the lead at 6-5 on Derrek Lees single to right.

The Marlins, who had never before defeated Wood, knocked him out in the sixth.
