In Annie Dilliard's An American Childhood Part Two, "Terwilliger Bunts One," Dilliard shows admiration of many of her mother's personal qualities and also ambivalence towards some. The qualities that that she admired were her mother's intelligence, her ability to stun or catch anyone off guard, her endless energy, her confidence and persistence and finally, her tenacity. She not only admired her mother's boldness, but also sometimes felt ambivalent towards it. Also she was ambivalent towards her mother's deceptiveness.

Dilliard most admires her mother's intelligence. This is true because she wrote anecdotes conveying her intelligence most often throughout this story. She loves the way her mother has stories about every subject and keeps her on her toes (p 150). She also admires the way her mother has invented such contraptions to be used in everyday life. Her mother's intelligence if further displayed with her knowledge of P.T. Barnum's dictum.

The ability of Dilliard's mother to catch anyone off guard at any time is also something that Dilliard admires. It seems that she is in awe of her mother's power to do so, maybe even a bit envious. She writes that her mother would change the situation in a single second, without notice, if she began to become bored (p151). Also reply to a simple question with an answer not even on the same topic, undoubtedly confusing.

"When shopping with mother, we got to the head of the checkout line, the checker, always a young man, asked, 'Save stamps?'

Do my essay on An American Childhood CHEAP !

'No,' Mother replied genially, week after week, 'I build model airplanes.' I believe she originated this line. It took me years to find where the joke lay.

She admires her mother's endless energy, and who wouldn't? A woman with such perseverance, and confidence in her actions, taking a stand for what she believes in. Dilliard suggests that her mother should have a greater role, such as the mayor of New York because she saw how things should be run (p15).

Lastly, Dillard admires her mother's tenacity. With the confidence she has she never gives up on anything. This attitude is shown in various parts of the story such as in the first anecdote about Terwilliger, on when she is discussing the her fascination about household objects and also on that same page with her attitude with minority opinions.

Though Dilliard expresses wide admiration for many of her mother's personal qualities, There was a few she feels ambivalent towards. One of these qualities being her mother's harsh boldness found in the anecdote of their family trip to the Zoo. Another quality she feels ambivalent towards is how deceptive her mother can sometimes be. For example, when a she would answer the phone on a wrong number, she would hand it to one of her daughters and say "It's for you." They had to figure out if they were to take pity on the caller or do their best at being the person they called for.

Dilliard conveys her attitudes in her writing with the syntax she uses and her choice of anecdotes. The ones she chose to write about and the way she tells each story shows each reader her attitude towards her mother and how she feels.

In conclusion, Annie Dilliard admires many of her mother's personal qualities. She also feels ambivalent towards some of them. Throughout the story she conveys her attitudes through each of the anecdotes she uses and the language she writes with.

Order your Compare and Contrasting creation myth charaacters paper at affordable prices with cheap essay writing service! A protagonist in a story is usually the main character. They interact in most parts of the story and are a big part of what you read. There can be other characters in the story that can conflict with the main character but you can tell which one is the more important. In the short creation myth, "The world on the Turtle's Back", and the two coyote stories, "Coyote and the Buffalo" and "Fox, Coyote, and Whale," there are many characters to compare and contrast to see the similarities or differences in their actions.

The most compatible characters from these stories would have to be the Coyote and the Left-handed twin. They are obviously very deceitful and sneaky in their own ways. For example, the Left-handed twin is always in competition with his Right-handed twin brother. Whenever his brother would work hard to make good, he would work even harder to make evil prevail. He always though of things to work against what his brother believed was right. The Coyote is the same way. He is very conniving and doesn't really pay much attention to those around him. He would rather do things his way without thinking of the consequences to come after.

These two characters also are the shadows or "helpers" to other main characters. For instance, the Left-handed twin would make no action until his brother would do something. Similarly, for the Coyote, in the "Fox, Coyote, and Whale" story, he would always support his friend, the Fox. He followed him to the places he went to look for his wife and encouraged him to never stop looking. They were both in a sense, shadows, of other characters.

The twin brothers would be an example of different qualities. They have nothing in common except from being born of the same mother. They disagree on everything and are very aggressive with each other when it comes to who creates the finest things. The Left-handed twin is very stubborn and doesn't stop and listen to anyone he believes is wrong, while on the other hand, the Right-handed twin is respectable and very truthful. He believes in what is right for the Earth and believes that lying is a sin. Although these two characters are very opposite, they can balance out the story in a good way because it would be too boring to just read one side. It's always good to hear both sides of the story.

In conclusion, the protagonist in each story plays a great part in understanding the meaning of the stories and getting the general ideas of the events that take place in the story. It's not always good to focus all your attention on one characters' view because you want to get the all-around opinions of each character even if it's not the main character. The Coyote really related to the Left-handed twin just because of his reputation of their reputation of being bad. The right handed twin related most to the Buffalo because the Buffalo was forgiving and also giving enough to give the Coyote his youngest cow. All these stories have great characters and even greater character point of views.

ʑRalph Ellison's Invisible Man is the story of an educated black man who has been oppressed

and controlled by white men throughout his life. Throughout the novel, the narrator is on a search

for his true identity. During the novel, the narrator values several important things which shape his

identity as well as his identity. The theme, values can help shape a persons identity, can be

explained through the elements of setting, characterization, and plot.

The setting is the first element that brings out the theme. The story takes place in Harlem,

New York and New York City. It is in those cities that the narrator experiences life as a whole. He

attended an all black college in which he was expelled from a little while later. After being kicked

out he rents a room at a Men's House in Harlem. He also stayed with a woman named Mary after

he was kicked out of the Men's House. It is here that he rests and revives his spirit.

The characters in the novel is another element that brings out the theme. For example,

Bledsoe, the president of the narrator's college, betrays him. He sends the narrator north with false

recommendation letters. Emerson is the son of one of the college's wealthy trustees. He tells the

narrator that Bledsoe has betrayed him. He expresses sympathy for the narrator, but he remains to

pre-occupied with his own problems to help the narrator. Mary is a woman with whom the narrator

stays with after learning that the Men's House has banned him for ninety days. She was a very nice

woman towards the narrator. She was so nice that she even let him stay with her for awhile without

paying.

The plot is the last element that brings out the theme. From the every beginning of the novel,

the narrator valued his education. The narrator treasures the briefcase that his superintendent gives

him so much because it symbolizes his education. Inside this suitcase he found a scholarship to the

state college for Negroes. He also holds value to the advice that his grandfather gives him. He

takes a grasp of this advice after Tod Clifton's death and after the brotherhood betrays him. The

decides to follow this advice and becomes a spy, pretending to be loyal to the Brotherhood, while

plotting to overthrow them. Towards the end of the novel, he beings to value his invisibility. His

invisibility ends up saving his life in the riots. Men were chasing him with base ball bats,

demanding that he turn over his briefcase. The narrator ran away and fell through a manhole,

finding himself in a coal cellar. He was now literally invisible to everyone, allowing him to escape.

In conclusion, the theme values can help shape a person's identity, is explained through the

elements of setting, characterization, and plot. Everyone values someone or something. At the

beginning of the novel, the narrator values his education, as it brings him many rewards. As he

develops and matures, he begins to value his invincibility, which allowed him to survive and it

became a key part in his plan to end oppression against blacks.

The Shop

Past the perennial greens, Mark's luminous pastures and the flying pebble's path. Lucy and me ran, ran away from the austere, patronizing words from our uncle. We'd had enough. Ever since mamma and papa died uncle had been in charge, he'd inherited the farm and us. Every bit of criticism he flung at us about mamma and papa filled us up. We kept it all bottled up but now we'd had enough we were leaving forever.

Panting breathlessly we ran with our rack-sacks bobbing loosely along. The beautiful sun shone bright, dashing the most magnificent sun light perfectly on the untouched sea. The sea gently sang a song made from elaborate waves. The prolific crabs were feeding and the minority birds were feeding on them, peacefully and quietly. Our feet felt good in the cool water a huge difference from the scorching sand.

We were going to be free, going to do what we wanted without that vindictive man. But where would we go? I was in charge now for good. Oh, I missed papa he would have known what to do he would have got that Uncle Bob right in the nose. Then Lucy interrupted my pensive thoughts and directed my eye to a dark and small house covered with unnecessary nails, rusted into the blocks of wood that were loosely bound together. The roof of the shack blasted an echoing horrible sound that sprang to our ears in an uncontrollable manner. Suddenly, a door shrieked, like a fingernail torn along a chalkboard. Unconsciously Lucy and me, in a moment's time were inside the wreck. One step inside, took us to a world of wonder. Antiques were everywhere. Lucy found a Magic book with a beautiful leather casing. There were a number of porcelain dolls glimmering, but still dull with age. The shelves were packed tight with books of all sorts, many small and many thick, all standing guards. Just then we heard the stairs creek one at a time, bearing weight at a threshold. The curtains flung open and there stood two sock-like shoes. Inside them sat two old bony legs fitted with knackety knees, and then a body as thin as a stick and a wrinkled face, each line telling a story of a lugubrious life. The old lady approached us. We both were shaking vigorously. Then a gentle hand touched me on the shoulder. Her voice was frail and light it beckoned me towards her. Soon I had been lead to another compartment to the shop. I was surprised that there was another one. The shack couldn't have accommodated another room it was impossible! The fragile creature obviously intimidated Lucy, for she came yelling and screaming telling the old granny to leave me alone, I quietened her down. There was nothing to be unnerved about. The woman then turned around to a shelf and took out a very peculiar box. She handed it to me; it was decorated in a very unusual way. A cuneiform inscription encased the ancient box. A pattern drenched with the colours red and black resembled something close to a cat. This box was old, really old. I looked up to ask what it was for. Just a smile past along the woman's face and was gone like the wind in a cornfield, and so was the woman and the shop. There we stood, Lucy mouth wide open and me peering into the box with great wonder and curiosity.

Shakespeare once said, " The world is a stage and the people merely players...", I love this view of life. If you stop and think about it we really are, we all have our own place, and we all have a director wether you believe in divine powers or not. Now I wouldn't consider myself an much of an actress, but in these next paragraphs I'd like to share to you what my role in this vast play of life is.

It all started in elementary school I was to say the least a chubby kid .Our world the way it is if your not considered "normal" by their standards you become an outcast, and me being quite natured it didn't help me much. Well with the grace of God, and support of my family and some close friends I lost about forty pounds in middle school , that helped me not to be as shy. Although I have broken out of my shell some what I'm still a little shy. Sometimes know when to be quite, shy and to keep your mouth shut is not such a bad thing.

Most people in the world do not ever fit the same mold, so we have to learn to tolerate and be open minded with each other. I think I'm open to most every thing, I always like to ask questions and find out all sides of the story. I think everyone is different and unique in their own way. Instead of trying to change people and try to make them what we want them to be, we should embrace them for who and what they are. Being tolerant with others also ties in with this. I work in the hospital and sometimes the people who are in there are not in the best of mood, and sometimes their down right rude. I have learned to adapt to situation because you can walk out of a room of happy people to one filled with despair and anger, I've learned to just be there for people no matter what.

Help with essay on college

Loyal- to stand beside someone through thick and thin. I've been told I'm a loyal person, I've always made it a point to be there when my friends need me and to stand up for them when their not there. For example, I had a friend last year, lets just say she went through some hard times and still is. She started to question her faith and other things in her life, and started to make herself distant from others. Well through that time I prayed for her, I remember one night I hadn't heard from her in a few days cause I was working and she was busy. She called me about eleven and she was crying. Even though I had to be up at six the next morning I stayed on the phone with her until she was better. I think it is important to be there for your friends and family no matter what they should have your unconditional love.

Hard work, I don't think you can get anywhere without it. I don't think you should ever do something half hearted, because nothing good comes of that. Wether I'm at work, school, or home I try my best to help and get done what needs to be done. It also pays off when you try hard and give your best, I have earned respect from my peers, teachers, and the adults in my life. Not only is it emotionally rewarding do work hard you get bonus like being able to afford to buy a car, and to be able to be more independent. The best thing of all is when you come home at the end of the day and you look back and you know you did your best.

I hope that this has shown you a glimpse of who I am and what I am about. Although I'm almost considered an adult, I've still got a lot of learning to do about life. For the time being I'm content with where I am, and by the grace of God, faith, and hope I think I'll make it through this life.

One of man's greatest fears is to be alone, isolated, separated from the rest of the world. Isolation brings frequent thoughts of loneliness to a person's mind and disables his ability to communicate with others. The fear of maybe never seeing other human beings again or possibly even dying constantly runs through the isolated person's head as he tries to find some contact with the outside world. Panic is his greatest enemy as he battles to keep his sanity. "The Birds" the short story, was written by Daphne du Maurier; "The Birds" the movie, was directed by Alfred Hitchcock. In both the film and the short story, isolation is shown in the far-off seaside towns where the stories take place, the feelings the characters experience when cut off from the outside world, and the ominous symbols of death which frequently appear throughout the stories.

The town in the film is separated by a two-hour drive from San Francisco. By the time the townspeople start to panic, the phone lines are dead, and all communication with the rest of the world is lost. Likewise, the small community in the short story is also separated by distance and the inability to contact other humans. Although both towns are located by the sea, the film's setting is in California and the short story's setting is in rural England. In comparison, the similarities in the settings are much more recognizable than the differences. Both settings are located in similar, small towns on the coast, each one takes place on a farm, and each one is the first home to be attacked.

In the film, the person who seems to fear isolation the most is Mitch's mother. She never wants to be left alone and is always worrying about what will happen next. For example, she asks Melanie to check on her daughter Cathy at the school building to see if the birds have attacked the children. Similarly, in the short story, Nat's wife exhibits this behavior and wants to go wherever Nat goes, even if her life could be threatened. She begs Nat relentlessly to take her and the children with him when he goes to investigate the Trigg's house to see if they are alright. However in the story, Nat's wife does not behave as erratically as Mitch's mother. In contrast to the film, the characters in the short story are more secluded; they cannot go anywhere of great distance because the Trigg's car is not dependable.

In the short story and the film, symbols of courage and death are apparent each time the birds appear. In the film, the color red seems to symbolize courage whenever the birds are about to attack. In contrast, the short story tells of the formation of the birds and of the changes in nature which could not possibly happen; which seems to symbolize an evil force. In the same way, the symbolisms are in some way related to death and the destruction of mankind. However one of the symbols directs more attention to nature than to a certain color.

In conclusion, the setting, the characters and the symbolism tie together to create a sense of fear and isolation. The setting helps to separate the characters from the rest of the population and to instill a greater fear in them by making them feel apart from everyone else. The symbolism supports this theory by targeting the little house in the short story and never letting up on attacks. The characters feel as if they are the only ones who are being tormented by these evil creatures and also as if they are the only ones left in their whole community. Although "The Birds" is considered a horror story, it depicts what life would be like to some people if they were cut off from the rest of the world.
