One of man's greatest fears is to be alone, isolated, separated from the rest of the world. Isolation brings frequent thoughts of loneliness to a person's mind and disables his ability to communicate with others. The fear of maybe never seeing other human beings again or possibly even dying constantly runs through the isolated person's head as he tries to find some contact with the outside world. Panic is his greatest enemy as he battles to keep his sanity. "The Birds" the short story, was written by Daphne du Maurier; "The Birds" the movie, was directed by Alfred Hitchcock. In both the film and the short story, isolation is shown in the far-off seaside towns where the stories take place, the feelings the characters experience when cut off from the outside world, and the ominous symbols of death which frequently appear throughout the stories.

The town in the film is separated by a two-hour drive from San Francisco. By the time the townspeople start to panic, the phone lines are dead, and all communication with the rest of the world is lost. However in the story, Nat's wife does not behave as erratically as Mitch's mother. In contrast to the film, the characters in the short story are more secluded; they cannot go anywhere of great distance because the Trigg's car is not dependable.

In the short story and the film, symbols of courage and death are apparent each time the birds appear. In the film, the color red seems to symbolize courage whenever the birds are about to attack. In contrast, the short story tells of the formation of the birds and of the changes in nature which could not possibly happen; which seems to symbolize an evil force.
