The Parliament Act did truly alter the face of parliament.

The Parliament Act of 111 also changed something that before the act had been a large part of parliament. The House of Lords, whose positions were hereditary, lost much of their influence in terms of government spending and taxes. Instead, the decisions lay in the hands of the popularly elected House of Commons.

By the early 100's, there were three national parties to vote for. These were the Conservatives, the Liberals and Labour. Labour was a party that represented the working classes, Conservatives were middle/upper class, and Liberals were not unlike the Conservatives, but according to historian Henry Pelling "In small towns and country villages the ministers and the lay preachers were the backbone of Liberal strength." The introduction of the Labour party gave a party that the working class could support, giving them a voice in parliament.

Not only did the working class become better represented, they became more aware of politics and their country, as a result of social advances. Access to information nationwide had improved. In 1870 in England and 187 in Scotland, education acts were passed, which required children to attend school. This act also led to the development of libraries in many communities.

The building of nationwide railway lines meant that tabloid newspapers came into existence since news could now travel across country with ease. Railways also meant that MP s could freely travel over the country, making speeches. In this way, the people were far more aware of current events in the world of politics.

Party agents were paid to organise publicity. These agents worked alongside branch associations. They were places where drinks were served and billiards played. Their purpose was to boost morale and increase support, as well as provide volunteers. In the Liberal parties, one of these branches grew and expanded into the National Liberal Federation in 1887. This branch served as a radical challenge to Whig leadership within the party. There was a similar branch that existed in the Conservative party The Conservative Central Office. Unlike the NFL though, it mainly followed the orders of the party leadership. In 1881, the Primrose league was formed, and it seemed invaluable in maintaining party support. H Pelling observes that this support came from "…the visit to village feasts, the chat in the village schoolroom, or pleasant friendly musical evenings in the winter." In other words, providing such hospitality and warmth to the constituents kept support. The massive increase in the electorate called for this parry organisation to exist.

It can be strongly argued that in Britain by 18, democracy had indeed been widely achieved. There was gender equality in terms of voting rights, for those over the age of twenty-one. There were regular elections, and voting was now free of corrupt activity, due to a secret ballot. MPs were now paid, enabling working class to be able to afford to enter into the House of Commons. There was a range of parties to choose from, and electoral districts were reasonable in size as well as roughly equal to each other. The House of Lords had far less influence over taxation and government spending. The various acts had improved the face of British democracy.

However, there were still flaws in the system. Those in the House of Lords got their position mainly by inheriting it, rather than voting. The basic democratic principal of 'one man, one vote' was still not truly enforced, since university graduates were entitled to two votes. Women, whilst having equal voting rights as men, still did not have social equality. They had received far lower wages than men did, and many careers were restricted, since it was still seen as a woman's duty to tend to domestic life. Finally, in relation to the electoral system -such as the benefits of proportional representation over first-past-the-post- still remained unsolved, and mainly not addressed. Donald Morrison suggests that "The development of liberal democracy had been slow and piecemeal. The system which had evolved by 18…had in place most of the apparatus necessary to satisfy the democratic aspirations of the nation. Nevertheless, the essence of a democracy is that of a system of government which promotes and encourages political change from below. Thus issues such as electoral reform, devolution and the promotion of equality continue to be debated…as part of our ongoing democratic political culture."

In my opinion I think that teenagers today are very stressed out. Grades in school are a lot more crucial these days. Getting good grades can get you into a good college. Going to college these days is almost a must. Many teenagers are stressed out with activities going on in their lives like sports, after school clubs, jobs, and many other things. Every year colleges are looking for more things, they want a student to be well rounded and in order for someone to be well rounded it seems you need to be in after school clubs, sports, and other activities. All these things take time and it can really take a toll on someone when they have no time to rest between school and their activities. Money is also a very big stress with teenagers. Freshman in High school are finding jobs already. Teenagers want all the new clothes, and they want cell phones, and they want their own cars. All this costs money, so many teenagers are putting in long hours or work so they can pay for college tuition and fun things like cell phones, cars, etc. Relationships in high school also can take its toll on teenagers. The pressure for teenagers to do drugs and alcohol is around them all the time. Teenagers are to make decisions that could affect their future. I only know of two girls who are my friends that still remain virgins. Many girls I know are depressed because they were used or are very regretful. I feel a lot of pressure to get good grades so I can get into a good college. I feel that sometimes I am to overwhelm with homework. I work at Lifetime fitness hours a week. I get really stressed out trying to go to school 7 hours, getting a half hour break then going to work for another 7 hours. One sweltering summer day, as my mother and I were visiting the impressionism exhibit at the National Museum of Art in Washington DC, she turned to me and asked about my favorite piece of art. The impressionist artist Claude Monet immediately came into mind. He has been one of my favorite artists for my whole life. I pondered there for a minute in the museum, reflecting upon my mother's question, then glanced up to see one of Monet's first pieces, entitled, Water Lilies With Clouds.

Water Lilies with clouds depicts the lagoon outside of Monet's French estate on a warm and sunny summer afternoon. The scene is filled with refreshing colors such as blue and green. He uses warm tones sparingly, mixing green and red to create a neutral brown that represents murkiness in the composition of the painting. The warm blue and green tones represent calmness and serenity, but as the colors get darker towards the top of the painting, visibility is reduced. The somber waters are a place that allows the viewer to store their own inhibitions and worries.

Monet describes his work as different hues of colors that, when put together in an organized fashion, make up an object (Pioch, Nicolas). When he's painting, he doesn't see a subject as a flower on a lily pad, he sees a mass of red and white colors mixed together situated near blue colors, which make the flower stand out. It gives the impressions of a flower on a lily pad. Monet's goal isn't to simply see an object and paint it in the traditional sense of drawing the object and coloring it in. Instead, Monet strategically places different, contrasting colors next to each other that, when viewed from a distance, form different objects.

The focal point of the painting is the dark murky area in the upper region. There is a sharp contrast between the light blue water and the dark and dense upper zone. The darkness of is Monet's way of expressing his innermost feelings. He paints with an impressionistic approach, focusing on colors alone. By making the focal point dark, Monet is sub-consciencely placing his emotions on his palette and then painting them on the canvas surface for the world to see. The darkness could represent a plethora of emotions, ranging from grief to depression, from fear to sadness.

In contrast, the cool, pleasant sky is reflected on the smooth glassy water like a mirror, giving Monet's painting a more dynamic, three dimensional feel. The clouds are marshmallows, light and fluffy, appearing as if one could jump from cloud to cloud. Flowers on the water lilies stand out because of the sharp contrast of the whites and pinks. The warm scene, outside of the darkness of the murky waters, is how I image paradise. Peace, serenity, and tranquility are just some of the emotions the scene generates inside me.

The texture of Water Lilies with Clouds is what makes it stand out from the thousands of other paintings. Monet's impressionistic form allowed him to crudely slop paint of various colors to the places he wished. This style created a texture that was so rough, the viewer could actually see the brush marks if they looked close enough. How amazing it is to get close enough to the art to see the texture! It's as if you can see Monet's brush still at work!

The scene Monet paints onto his canvass seems to be missing an important artistic feature a centralized subject . This was an intentional strategy Monet used that allowed the viewer to place themselves inside the painting and become the primary motif. It sends a strong message to the views. We must not be a passive figure while viewing art. We must take a step farther and step inside the art, place ourselves inside the art, and feel what the painting feels. Only when we submerge ourselves within a painting can we truly appreciate it and understand it.

Everything around me all of a sudden changed from the 1st century to the 80's. The newly paved and painted roads turned into old gravel streets. The new seven story buildings turned into old cobble stone houses. The brand new sports car turned into an old Chevy. Then it hit me, we were in good old Philippi. I was in Philippi West Virginia with my youth group. The youth group goes to Philippi every year, but this year was different; I was going. Some of the events that happened on the work trip were; we learned about the worksites, we worked on and repaired the worksites, and we unfortunately had to take a few trips to the emergency room.

On the night we arrived at Philippi we were given a little while to unpack and inflate our air mattresses. I ended up sharing a room with Dave, Bill, and Matt. When we were finished we went to the large meeting room. When everyone was there our youth leader welcomed us and then told us about the worksites. I was on site A, which was a house on a hill and was occupied by a mom, dad, four girls, one boy, one baby, and two dogs. As far as the house and yard they were in bad shape. There were four piles of shingles that needed to be thrown away, one of which was on the roof. There was a hole in their front yard which was about 15'X4' and about three to four feet deep. The roof above their porch was rotting, and their other roof to the actual house was not even shingled. They also had draining problems on the roof. Another problem was that all types of insects, ranging from bees, wasps, hornets, ants, spiders, flies, and roaches, infested the property. Now on the inside of the house three windows were broken and their kitchen floor was sinking. The other site needed a new attachment built on their trailer. They needed new steps in the front of their house and a ramp at the back of the attachment. After Dave was done telling us about the sites we watched the Princess Bride, then we went to bed around midnight to one.

Beep, Beep, the alarm clock goes off and an answer of groans arose from the sleeping quarters. It was 600 and we needed to get up and eat before 700. Around 60 we all were up and eating, breakfast included pancakes with fruit and whip cream and orange juice to drink. At 755 we left. I was in a car with Barry, Jordan and two other Chris's; Chris D. and Chris B. We got to the worksite around 800. After meeting the family we got to work. The first day we moved the piles of shingles to the trash cart that we ended up filling up twice. After that we started ripping the rotting plywood off the bottom of the porch roof. Our progress was suddenly halted when the second board of plywood was pulled down and we discovered a huge wasp nest. We all moved away quickly and went to the other side of the house and took a break, so the angered wasps could settle down. After about 15 minutes we went back with a can of wasp spray. When we got there we came up with a plan of action. Someone would spray the nest, and of course with my luck that person was me. Everybody stayed back except for me. So I started spraying the nest and I didn't stop spraying until the whole nest was a foaming white ball. Since we had a little time we came up with another plan we would knock the nest over and crush it with a piece of plywood. We then took a shovel and knocked the nest down, threw the piece of plywood on top and then started jumping on it. Unfortunately a few wasps were still flying around and Chris D. got stung on the arm, but other than that we all came out of it alive. After that we continued ripping down the plywood. After the plywood was all ripped down we examined the rest of the wood and we decided it was too rotted. So for the rest of the day we ripped down the rest of the porch roof. On the nd day we started out by framing the new porch roof. Then we started roofing. First we put down tarpaper, and then we started shingling. When we were three fourths of the way done with it, the mid-day sun was unbearable, so we were forced to get off the roof. Then for the rest of the day we filled up the hole in the front yard with dirt. We also took the three broken windows out and replaced them with larger ones. The next day we finished shingling the porch roof and were about to start shingling the other roof when we realized that we would need some kind of scaffold so no one would fall off. After making a scaffold out of X4s we nailed it to the roof and started shingling. In the afternoon the rest of my group worked in the kitchen working on the floor. The next day we finished shingling the roof, since it was a nice day we stayed on the roof all day. The following day, which happened to by our last day we touched up on areas that needed it and we built a cricket, so the roof wouldn't have draining problems. By the end of the day we were finished.

The reason the work trip was so interesting was that we were able to learn about the sites, repair the sites and the few trips to the E.R. also made it interesting. In one week we added an attachment to a trailer, and repaired a home that was almost beyond repair. The sites fixed and changed, sweat from hard work and blood were the only things that were left behind when we left and headed back home.
