In "The Judge's Wife", Isabelle Allende uses women to contribute to the death of Nicolas Vidal, as well as that of Judge Hidalgo. The women in the story are the motivating force behind the men. They represent control. The title suggests that the wife, Doña Casilda will contribute a considerable amount of influence in the story. Juana the Forlorn and the midwife also play a role in changing and ending the lives of the men in the story.

Nicolas Vidal is the sympathetic character. He was born of "Juana the Forlorn" and an unknown father. It was because of these circumstances, Juana tried to abort Vidal. She knew "the world had no place for him". However, Vidal survived his mother's attempts to destroy his life. Since Vidal is unwanted by his mother, he develops a tough interior. He is described as having a "soul [with] the hardness of iron".

Once born, the midwife predicted his fate, "Poor creature he'll lose his head over a woman". It is because of this prediction, that he is cautious of women. "He [was] always…wary of emotional contact with women, hardening his heart… .

Help with essay on The Judge's Wife

Doña Casilda the protagonist of the story, is Vidal's foil. Casilda is described as being "airy, diaphanous, and insubstantial." She represents the good that can be found in man. She is caring, loving, and forgiving; which is be shown in her freeing of Juana, changing of the judge's personality, and her care for her children.

Vidal becomes a bandit. He is continually causing trouble with his "band of desperadoes". He constantly has Judge Hidalgo running after him. The Judge is described as having a cruel demeanor."[Judge Hidalgo] refused to apply any common sense in…his

profession, and was harsh…. It is through his marriage with Doña Casilda, that he represents justice in its fair and understanding form. For example, he sees no wrong in faulting an adulterous wife whose husband kept himself a mistress.

Hidalgo desperately desires to capture Vidal. He attempts numerous times, when he finally decides to set a trap for Vidal. Hidalgo makes Juana the focus of the trap. He tells his troops not to let her go until Vidal is captured.

Vidal chooses not to rescue his mother from her confinement. It is Doña Casilda who goes against her husband's wishes, feels sorry for Juana and sets her free. Juana then chooses to commit suicide because she felt her son was disloyal to her. By committing suicide, she causes Vidal to avenge her death.

Judge Hidalgo fears that his life is in danger. He attempts to take his family to safety. On his way to escaping his heart splits. Casilda then takes over the role of a leader. She waits for Vidal and his men to approach, but only Vidal shows up. She surrenders to him and they begin to have intercourse. Vidal's longing for an evocative relationship with women, makes him vulnerable to the temptation of being satisfied by Casilda. "[He] had fled from love since birth, and knew nothing of intimacy… and the joy of shared passion."

Casilda prolongs the encounter long enough to allow Vidal to be captured. The prediction is then fulfilled, Vidal loses his head over a woman. Hidalgo's wish is fulfilled. Ironically, his life was sacrificed to obtain it.

Throughout the story Vidal, could have been easily killed by men because of his life as a bandit. His prediction, however did not involve death by men, it involved women. Juana has involvement by trying to abort him. She is the one responsible for his tough interior. By committing suicide, she causes Vidal to avenge her death.

Casilda is involved of changing Hidalgo's unjust ways as a judge. She goes against her husband wishes and frees Juana. By having intercourse with Vidal, she makes it easy to capture by officials.

The attempts of abortion, the suicide of his mother, the death of Hidalgo, and Vidal's surrendering to his death, employ the involvement of women. The women in the story have give direction of Vidal's outcome. Vidal chose to live his life, suspicious that any woman could contribute to his prediction. He could have appreciated love much earlier in life.

Minimum Wage Law

The minimum wage law was a law passed that guaranteed workers a certain amount of pay all the time, which basically covered every job in the United States, especially jobs involving interstate commerce or those in the production of goods used for interstate commerce. Whether a person was shoveling poop in an alley for the city, or designing cars for Chevrolet; they were all guaranteed a certain amount of pay.

Passed in 18, was passed in 18 as part of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FSLA). Originally, the minimum wage law applied to workers who were engaged in interstate commerce and the production of goods for interstate commerce. This law applied to around 11.0 million of 54. million workers. The minimum wage was set at $.5 per hour. Since 18 the wage limit has been changed 6 times, with the most recent one on September 1, 17. The majority of occupations included in the minimum wage laws have steadily increased until, at present, the majority of jobs in the United States are covered.

In 161 Amendments to the minimum wage law extend coverage primarily to employees in large retail and service trades as well as local transit, construction, and gasoline service station employees. Also in 166 the minimum wage law extended coverage to state and local government employees of hospitals, nursing homes, and schools and to employees of laundries, dry cleaners, large hotels and motels, restaurants, and farms. Later amendments extended coverage to the remaining federal, state and local government employee not protected in 166, to certain workers in retail and service trades previously exempted, and to certain domestic workers in private household employment. Since 180 the minimum wage has increased $.15.

Despite increases in the minimum wage during the 10s, the buying power of the federal minimum wage has declined by nearly 5 percent over the last 0 years. In fact, the prevailing minimum wage is not high enough to afford a two-bedroom home at fair-market rent anywhere in America. The federal minimum wage is $5.15 per hour. The Fair Minimum Wage Act would raise the minimum wage to $5.0 per hour 60 days after enactment and to $6.65 per hour one year after that. This measure would put money into the hands of 10-1 million low-wage workers, bolstering consumer income and spending for workers who do not receive income tax cuts.

I think the minimum wage law is a great idea because it encourages people to work without having to worry about underpay, and overwork. Since the minimum wage law was passed poverty decreased, more people are working, and it has opened many more jobs for the American worker. For example, because of the minimum wage law, a worker does not have to worry about getting underpaid, therefore more people would be encouraged to work, which increases the unemployment rate. Because more people are working and more jobs are available poverty would decrease which is nothing but positive issues for the United States. There would be less homeless people, cleaner cities, and an all around nicer environment. However, because of technology advancing so rapidly and prices on goods increasing daily, I feel we should once again raise the minimum wage law to $6.15. $5.15 an hour now is just not enough to get along in today's competitive world.

In conclusion an increase in minimum wage does NOT create a higher unemployment rate simply because when people are guaranteed a higher pay than what they are used to, the demand for jobs will be higher, which in turn creates a greater supply for jobs. Because of more jobs available and more people working the unemployment rate will decline and more people will be working. With a high demand for work and an increasing supply for jobs, the minimum wage limit slightly increases every few years. Since 18 the wage limit has increased $4.0 and will continue to increase as long as there is a demand for jobs. Without a wage limit businesses could pay as low as they wanted, and people without jobs would constantly be searching for high pay, which would mean tons of people would be without work. Poverty would go up, as well as crime, and deaths due to unclean living facilities and towns. Therefore, with a minimum wage limit set, it would help our country in many, many ways, and the unemployment rate would decrease.

This man's nihilistic tendencies are beginning to matter I thought to myself while sitting comfortably in slippers, with a glass of tepid water, reading the Times.

NEWSprint is glaring/demanding DEATHSEXMURDERBOMBEXTRAEXTRACRASH.

And the font is familiar like my slippers the same the same.

This man's nihilistic tendencies not only matter, but they're going to change the way I read this newspaper. And I don't mean chronologically. I don't mean reading Doonesbury first and then the sports and then the front page, or even the aforementioned list backwards, or even scrambled. Nope. What I mean. What I'm talking about is attention, man.

Attention you normally pay you normally stand at now I've found reason for attention.

So, some-body dies in a wreck; and then I read about it and some-times try to be sad, but what results is only the attempt I'm never truly affected. But I try to care. The same goes for politics, plus football scores, plus celebrity gossip, plus Elian Gonzalez, plus and even rapes. I try to caretried againnopecan't.

But things are different now. This ain't politics, Martha. This ain't about the General Assembly, Joe. And dammit, George, who gives a flying fist fuck about the Minnesota Vikings.

He's an anarchist which is an almost anagram for "antichrist;" I'm such a rambler. I get rambly when excited.

He's a Neal Cassidy. He's the crazy-eyed radical/anarcho-syndicalist/agitator#1.

Is there a fireplace in this room? Just a gas stove. Well, I better switch that on, because I'm wearing slippers and reading the newspaper it just seems appropriate to have a fire. Sure. And what about me gettin' rid of this tepid water and gettin' some tea, dammit. English Gray. That would just really be perfect.

I read the Times every day.

At four o'clock post meridian.

In this gold-buttoned leather chair.

But I'm only processing the familiar font and the taste of the soft pages against my grooved fingertips. Ask me what I've read? Nothing. Ask me what I've noticed? I think there was a picture on page A-…of a girl…with blonde locks…she was pretty.

Other people soak up scandal. They hungrily smack their gums stains on skirts pubic Coke perished little beauty queen Boom! Must be the A-rabs again. Those candy asses know all the juicy details.

My eyeballs dance over the words and recognize letters, but not sentences or topic. Sigh. That was until today.

I was watching birds in the park last Tuesday. Emerald blades of grass, cropped like a Navy boy's skull. Benches with old timers. Manicured trees. And dog shit. That's the park where I was last Tuesday, watching the birds//

Pigeons mainly; sky rats. Then one or two robins. I was watching as a woman walked past and they exploded into the air. Their wings slapped the breeze and they tumbled up and away. I could hear their wings. I could hear it hit air. I could hear their feathers slap at nothing. I then realized that what we conceive of as air, we consider nothing. There's nothing there, right? Nothing between your fingers. Nothing between or above or below. Just nothing. Just air.

But in fact, that nothing is just widely-spaced molecules. And if it had color, and if it had higher density, it might be like wading through water. And if you pushed this equation further it might be like sand. I could hear their feathers slapping it. And I was breathing it. And it sure as hell isn't/wasn't nothing. Is the Pacific Ocean nothing? Those sky rats were swimming in the gargantuan unnamed sea that we call "absence of."

And so after that, I looked at things different.

This man, this nihilist, he looks at things different too. He's an important one; if people listen, he might change everything.

Letter to the Editor

"There is only one thing to say regarding Ed Hayslip's column on rhetoric and its mathematical nature - - - the space of zero encapsulates infinity.

Sincerely, Mark Insurgent"

Yes. I read this. I retained. I recalled. I responded. And now I sit pondering its monumental truth.

Ostentatious superfluity is a bane. Just like that writing professor once said, "Less is more." And so there's the recurring imageryDEATHBOMBCRASHMURDER. Overloaded synapses. My gray matter won't reserve another wrinkle. Remember the wise insurgent, quality looms. A revolution of the spirit, a refining of language, a redefinition of reportage and scribbling and speech and Harlequin romances. Yep. Now where's my tea? English Gray.

"The Swimmer's Moment" by Margaret Avison

Reader's Response

"It is better to have tried and failed…"

"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." -Martin Luther King Jr. (1 - 168), Strength to Love, 16. Life is riddled with challenge after challenge; this ensures the growth of child to adult. Everyone meets challenges in their lives, and the only thing that separates the winners from the losers is which they choose; to ignore the challenge, hoping it will go away, or to face the challenge, hoping to win against it. The worst possible response to a challenge is no response at all. In the poem "The Swimmer's Moment," the author Margaret Avison discusses these common responses to challenges.

In this poem Margaret Avison uses a swimmer to symbolize humans and the whirlpool in this poem symbolizes a challenge. She demonstrates that for the most part each and every one of us will face many obstacles throughout our lives For everyone? The swimmer's moment at the whirlpool comes. For some, even with this common knowledge, continue to disregard the obstacles that confront them. From childhood we are continuously bombarded with lectures about what doesn't kill you will just make you stronger instructing that constant attempts will rewarded with much more than no attempt. It is always worse not to respond to the challenge than it is to be beaten by it.

The poem indicates that everyone actually enters the water on the edge of the pool the imaginative leap is taken by all, knowingly or unknowingly; "But many at that moment will not say/'This is the whirlpool, then.'" Such a venture, then, is a condition of human existence a moment of judgment we all must face, followed by salvation or damnation; win or defeat. Margaret Avison illustrates this with an image of eternal suffering through willing ignorance their bland-blank faces turn and turn/Pale and forever on the rim of suction/They will not recognize. The word forever in this context has hellish connotations and with the combination of bland-blank a mental image of zombies is presented. Their willed refusal to acknowledge the existence of the whirlpool saves such persons from the black but saves them only through bland-blank eyelessness and anonymity; and they are of course not saved but damned, locked into a whirlpool of their own dullness.

Someone with a courageous outlook towards challenges believes that even losing is better than not trying Of those who dare the knowledge/Many are whirled into the ominous centre/That, gaping vertical, seals up/For them an eternal boon of privacy. Although the people who tried and failed will spend eternity in the centre of the whirlpool, at least their shame will not be flaunted like that of those who refused attempt. Instead, they are granted the boon of privacy to live their personal defeat in, until the next challenge arises. Margaret Avison illustrates so vividly the huge difference between a simple attempt and none at all. She creates a universal image to demonstrate the warm feeling that one often gets after an attempt even if this attempt ends in defeat.

Often, many may be afraid to do something in case they should fail, but Margaret Avison wants to portray to the readers to see that the public defeat of those who don't try is far worse than the private one of those who try and fail. The image in the poem is parallel to perhaps an exam in school; the exam is the challenge and if the challenge is ignored a mark of zero is awarded. If the challenge is met even a weak attempt in theory will reward a better mark than zero. Even if the pupil is unprepared for the exam they will be rewarded with a higher mark than zero. These challenges are meant not for the sole purpose of winning but to improve one's personality; increased responsibility, maturity, sensitivity, in whole something that will encourage a person to become wiser and a overall better person. Everyone is given an opportunity to do something about the challenges that they meet; only those who take that opportunity have a chance to win.

Order your Petr Durnovo Analysis paper at affordable prices with cheap essay writing service! Petr Durnovo, a member of the Tsar Nicholas II's state council of senior advisors, offers a portrait of tsarist society and predicts social upheaval as the result of the difficulties of war with Germany. In his Memorandum of February 114, he begs the Tsar not to go to war with imperial Germany and thoroughly describes to him what the outcome may be if war was to erupt between the two nations.

Durnovo's memorandum was interesting on two accounts. It was a brilliant prophetic statement on the possible collapse of the Russian monarchy as a result of a war with Germany, as well as its attempt to persuade the Tsar that Russia's best interests including the advance of war lay with realizing that the "English orientation of our diplomacy is in essence profoundly wrong"(p.44) and that therefore the proper course lay with a rapprochement with Germany.

Durnovo feels that because of the signing of the Anglo-Russian accord, (following the Russo-Japanese war) has put Russia in a messy position. This accord, he believes, has brought nothing of value to Russia and that it threatens an inevitable clash with Germany (p.6). He carries on to say that if Russia and England do go to war with Germany, Russia will be the one doing all of the "dirty work" by providing manpower, and maintaining defense. He feels as though "England is hardly capable of taking a considerable part in a continental war" and that "the part of a battering ram, making a breach in the very thick wall of the German defense will be ours [theirs]" (p.6). The amount of sacrifices Russia will have to make due to this siding with England will take an enormous toll on her economy.

It is quite clear throughout the document that Durnovo feels Russia will be responsible for the "dirty work" and putting forth the most effort during the war. He is quite puzzled, however, as to how Russia is expected to provide her allies with the manpower and at the same time maintain a defense. Durnovo then reminds the Tsar "because of their dependence upon foreign industry, Russia is unable to provide successfully" (p.8). This is because if an outbreak of war does occur, the Baltic Sea will be blockaded, preventing the deliverance of any and all supplies into Russia.

Buy cheap Petr Durnovo Analysis term paper

So, for Russia's best interests, Durnovo feels that Russia should establish friendly relations through rapprochement with Germany. He feels that the vital interests of Russia and Germany do not conflict; therefore, rekindling a bond would not be a terrible thing. As mentioned above, without a strong German influence in Russia, her economy would slowly wither away. "Russia is far too poor both in capital and in industrial enterprise, to get along without the import of foreign capital" (p.41). Durnovo believes that German capital is far too advantageous to Russia and must be handled with care.

Russia must therefore handle its relationship with Germany carefully, and not overstep her grounds, since Germany plays such a vital role for Russia's existence. Durnovo also points out that there is no reason as to why Germany and Russia should not be "friendly nations". He points out that Germany and Russia do not have conflicting interests, and therefore have nothing really to feud over. "The vital interests of Germany and Russia do not conflict. There are fundamental grounds for a peaceable existence of these two states." (p.8). To further his point he gives an example of how Germany's interests are in those colonies that border the sea, and how Russia has no interest in this region at all.

Reviewing all that has been said, Durnovo concludes by summarizing his opinions, and expresses them in a manner that the Tsar will hopefully consider. He mentions yet again that England and Russia do not share any common grounds whatsoever and should be left to take her own path. Durnovo feels that just because England has a problem with German orientation, Russia should not quarrel on her account. Keeping Russia's best interests in mind, Durnovo again tries to persuade the Tsar one last time, that rapprochement with Germany would be the path to take, leaving England to handle her own affairs. The future, Durnovo leaves in the hands of the Tsar, hoping that what he has said has made a difference.

When a person walks into a salon, they want to feel and be treated like they are worth a

million dollars. That should be every cosmetologists goal, to respect, and treat their client like

they are worth every single dollar they are paying for. If a person wants to become a

cosmetologist, they need to have a background of cosmetology, they need to know the outlook,

Buy cheap beauty of being a beautition term paper

and have a great education.

Knowing about hair is a big help when a person wants to pursue the job as a

cosmetologist. There are many different types of cosmetologists. Some just specialize in one

specific field, while others take the adventure of doing them all. The biggest field of

cosmetology is hair. Cutting, coloring, and styling all include hair (Traci Mclain). In order to

have a perfect cut, a stylist needs to be up to date with the latest trends. The second largest part of

cosmetology is face and body. The massages, makeup and waxing are becoming more popular

each day.

Not only is having a background important, knowing the outlook of this career is

important too. When one is interested in becoming a cosmetologist, they should really think hard

about it. Cosmetology is not for everyone (Cosmetology). This job entails completing required

courses and having some artistic sense of style. Above all this, a Cosmetologist should impress

their clients, this is how they build a strong bond with them (Traci Mclain). The art of hair can

be both physically demanding, and financially rewarding. In 001 cosmetologists made

$7,000.00 a year. The more experienced made 50,000.00 or more in that year (Cosmetology).

Cosmetology maybe a challenge for some, because the profession requires a person to be on their

feet all day. Breathing in hazardous fumes plays a major role too.

Outlook can help one decide if they want this type of career, but above all, education is

the most important part of choosing a career, especially for this one. Many salons will not hire a

person who has gone to a school that had overall poor performance (Traci Mclain). This

is why looking for a good school is so important. In the state of Illinois, one needs to be in a high

school program, have a high school diploma, or a GED to be accepted to many beauty schools.

Some general education classes that are good for this career are English, accounting, chemistry,

speech, and a language. Taking a language class is a very good idea because people interact

with different languages each day, this could build a strong relationship with a client

(Cosmetology). A person in beauty school will need1500 hours to be completed. Not only

does one need these hours, they also need to pass all practices, which include Cut, color, style,

half a perm, manicure, pedicure, and a facials. After all the practices are completed, the

cosmetologist may receive their diploma, and their information is sent to the state board exams

(Traci Mclain). The state board exams are different in each state. If a person is moving out of

state, they will need to retake the state boards from the state they are moving to. The state

boards are a two hour exam, each person has three times to take the exam. If they fail all three

times the person needs to return back to beauty school for 500 hours (Traci Mclain). Every year

and a half, a person needs to renew their cosmetology license. They can either renew their

license by attending seminars, or going to beauty school for a certain amount of hours. Seminars

include beauty shows. The two most popular shows that cosmetologists attend are The Midwest

Beauty Show and Expressions (Cosmetology). These shows can be extremely interesting.

Licensed cosmetologists walk around all the booths and look at new hair ideas, the seasons colors,

and many models. Companies such as Redken, Rusk, KMS, Nioxin, and TIGI attend these

shows (Traci Mclain).

Cosmetologists are trying to help people with physical flaws they have, and trying to

make them into a positive feature. Having knowledge of this career will only help a

cosmetologist become an expert. The outlook is important so a person will be able to decide if

they want the job. Education is important so a cosmetologist can get a stable job. With these

aspects of this career, a cosmetologist can help their clients as much as possible.

Latin American literature till the threshold of 1th century was principally based on Iberian models. The contemporary scene begins around the year 140. The Spanish Civil War (16-1) and the unequal fratricide made a tremor in the Latin American minds. As a consequence the reading materials from Spain were cut short. The liberal intellectuals of Spain migrated to the continent. It was not merely a voyage to rediscover the roots. By the hands of the Boom writers Latin Americans became the producers of literature. They were considered as customers in the past.

Marquez believes that any novel has the spirit to unravel the world. Then a good novel becomes a poetic transcript of reality. Good novel must be a poetic transposition of reality (Apuleyo Mendoza 7). In the world of his novels the real and fantastic merge the anachronistic and contemporaneous fuse and co-exist and ultimately the narration moves forward and backward. His novels are the poetic transcriptions of Colombia in particular and Latin America in general, where the impact of modernity and technological advance has not yet swept away the hard and simple way of living. They still believe in magic and miracle. The Latin Americans accepted death and destruction, war and violence, horror and cruelty, the gruesome and squalid, and the absolute power of bloodthirsty dictators as factors of life.

Our great problem is the search for identity, we havent found it yet (Larmer et al. 44-45), once he remarked. This perennial problem haunts the lion share of his novels. In One Hundred Years of Solitude, Melquiades, the gypsy, introduces the dazzling world of science and technology to Macondo. Jose Arcadio Buendia applied the mystified science of Melquiades in real life situation. He unearths a colonial coin and calcified skeleton. His search for identity is multi dimensional. He digs the past and he gets colonial remains.

Cheap University Papers on INTRODUCTION TO MARQUEZ

The theme of revolutions has been reiterated in is novels. Latin America has a history smeared with blood. Many dictators quenched their power thirst by massacre. The report of Amnesty International (in March 17) said that sixty two percent of worlds political tortures took place in Latin America. And this devilish brutality has been depicted in many novels. In the Autumn of the Patriarch Marquez shows the patriarch ruling Latin America for 150 years. Reality and fantasy hobnob with each other and truth becomes as powerful as the truth of fable, where everything is far away from reality. It is a novel of social and political protest. Violence and poetry, magic and realism heighten the effect.

Politics and prose are entwined in his novels. Marquez, it seems, is driven by a sublime mission, the political, social and cultural integration of Latin America, a continent forever crippled by its internal divisions. It was the ideal of Simon Bolivar (whose last days were depicted in the novel The General in His Labyrinth (10). Marquez once made it explicitly clear. For me what is fundamental is the ideology of Bolivar; the unity of Latin America that is the only cause Id die for.

In so far as apprehended only a few has conducted extensive studies in the writings of G.G. Marquez. In the new world with accelerated interest on the trans-continental writings, I think my work will expand the horizon of our knowledge in Marquez and it will throw light on the shrouded Colombian literary arena.

Many writers were baffled with history, and some of their attempts in connecting history with literature failed. History is believed to be logical, reasonable, rational and conventionally founded upon what is termed, matter of facts. Historians' texts were believed to be objective, comprehensive, and founded upon concrete realities.

Fiction is, fundamentally speaking, a product of mans imaginative world in which the reasonable, rational and logical mind is at rest. But serious artists who work after getting influenced by history could not escape from the labyrinth of realities.

My perusal focuses on this feature. To be specific how far Marquez succeeded in identifying history as his treasury to formulate some of his key themes. Here, Marquez was infatuated with history and achieved a towering success in creating a symbiotic relationship between history and fiction.

In a sense of speaking, doing the job one has been trained to do, does not necessarily mean the person is experienced and does a great job. To be experienced is to do extra outside the specialized workplace to which comes the ability to do things that are not necessarily required to be done. This is why we as school children are required to take general education in college. School children keep whining about the fact of having to take general education in college and say that they hardly help them in their future careers. General education does help a lot; we just don't see it in ourselves but through other. General education might not seem as an important component of our schooling, but if a deep look is taken into its effect on school children, it does have a lot of importance, and the more reason it needs to stay in the university curriculum.

There are many discussions I hear around campus about students doing classes that totally have nothing to do with what they are majoring in, such as, majoring in nursing and having to do freshman composition or American history. Having taken a religion class has no direct relationship to becoming a psychologist whatsoever, but once a big picture is seen, a great career starts with a well-matured mind and stable background.

Job opportunities these days have a great correlation with general education. According to most employers, it's not how well you do your job; it's how well you do what's not your job. They look for someone who is more open-minded rather than fixed on what they have been trained to do. Most jobs require the ability to communicate effectively and to deal with certain life situations that don't directly deal with the profession. For instance, a nurse might not necessarily have to do psychology or freshman composition, but in order to effectively communicate and socialize with patients, these courses do play a big role. Most professional careers have almost everything to do with interaction skills and general education has everything to do with achieving that. Without general education, a career would become an experience worth living for.

For those that don't really have a stable ground as to what they want to do in their future, general education has come to be known to open up the window of potential career choices. General education helps one to choose what he or she would like to do in the future. General education has been known to keep an open door for a graduate, so to speak; it leaves so many opportunities for future profession taking. I could be a simple physician, but have done psychology in university, I could easily help out somebody who is having cognitive or mental problems. I could have a minor specialty of general psychology.

General education does not only correlate only with careers. General education also has something to do with relationships with others as a whole. For instance, if I were someone who just took my required classes for med school, I would become more of a non-sociable person. I would probably become an introvert and someone who wouldn't be able to deal with small issues of life. General education such as religion, history, psychology, and freshman composition would help me in my relationship with my still-to-come children. In order to be successfully socially and spiritually, especially at Southwestern Adventist University, general education plays a major role.

General education builds great-minded humans. Just the other day I had participated in the 'Annual Alumni Fund Phonathon', and came to realize that many doctors and teachers came to be what they are from Southwestern Adventist University. They talked so well on the phone and were very interactive. To be honest, no one who I called was rude or had nothing to say to me. I also had some long conversations with many of the alumni. General education had to have a role as to what these alumni came to be. This is why it has to be left in the curriculum. Both private and government schools need to keep the standard of doing general education because the betterment of the future of school children is instilled by general education. The government and the people need to realize how much this education does to the school children. The children themselves need to realize how much general education is doing to them and their future. General education is like the heartbeat . . . the cornerstone of a career and we all need to make sure that it stays in our schools and that it never fades away because if it does, all will break loose.

Please note that this sample paper on General Education is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on General Education, we are here to assist you. Brett Lady Ashley

Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises begins with Gertrude Stein's quotation "You are all a lost generation." In the book, Hemingway's world is a world where the power swifts from masculine hand to feminine, or at least where that shift helps to take power, so in the hands of Brett Lady Ashley.

"Brett and Jake emerge as the paradigmatic couple who best represent the shift in the

perception of gender following World War I. This redefinition of masculinity and

femininity was not an abrupt rift in the cultural landscape but rather a gradual shifting

of the ground on which the edifice of Victorian sexual identity was built." (Kert).

With the loss of the confidence of masculine invincibility and authority after the war, came an indifferent attitude that is a compensatory position for a new awareness of vulnerability.

"For a long time, I had seen nothing sacred, and the things that were glorious had no

glory and the sacrifices were like the stock yards in Chicago if nothing was done

with the meat except by it" (Hemingway A Farewell to Arms).

Hemingway's definition of courage, which he succinctly phrased as "grace under pressure," is directed to women who felt helpless to meet the demands of their sacrificial role. Brett Lady Ashley illustrates feminism post World War I but pre-Valerie Solanas.

Brett Lady Ashley's physical appearance presents her controlling stance in society. Not only does she wear a man's hat and have a man's haircut, but also her name is predominately associated with a male. Although she has many masculine features, she is the ideal woman as well. With her blonde hair and striking beauty the "blonde bombshell" theory comes in effect. Brett also has a motherly instinct to nurture and be needed by the men she uses. Mike observes that Brett "loves looking after people" (0). Brett is caught between two modes of gender representation- that of a self-reliant modern woman and the idealized woman on the pedestal. She is both the idealized other whom men seek as a prize for their ability and the sovereign woman who tires to make her own decisions. Although she has broken the connection between moral and physical purity, she still plays the redemptive role of trying to save men through her sexuality.

Sex is ultimately Brett's weapon towards men. Brett is described as promiscuous because of this. Though Georgette is a prostitute, she is considered a more ethical character than Brett. Brett is wanton simply for entertainment, where Georgette is dependent on it for financial support. Brett likes to keep her options open, diversify her investment of social and sexual energy, so that she may maximize her opportunities. Interestingly, Brett breaks up her relationships when her lovers attempt to claim her, that is, to exercise authority over her. She even leaves the bullfighter Romero, a man to whom she is overwhelmingly attracted, when he shows signs of wanted to domesticate her. He tell her to give up her mannish felt hat, to let her hair grow long, to wear more modest clothes. But she has rejected the ideal of female dependence and delicacy. "He wanted me to grow my hair out. Me, with long hair. I'd look so like hell" (46).

Brett is fickle and uses men for sex and money. Brett has some money from her second husband, from whom she has separated. She also depends on her ability to attract men who will pay for her drinks, her dinners, her taxis and trains. And just as she expects men to pay for many of her self-indulgent pleasures, most of the men in the novel do. Brett's lack of financial and emotional independence is clearly stated in the opening paragraphs of the novel; Hemingway observes that Brett has a "grand vitality" but that she "has never been very good at being alone."

"Approximately 8 million soldiers died in the trenches on Western Europe in the years 114-118" (Fussell "The Great War and Modern Memory"). This laid a foundation for the women to take a step forward, and become more independent- a large step for feminism. For a long time, men were men. But, sacrifice and glory redefined men and after a long time of being "men", men and women find themselves changed. Nevertheless, Hemingway points out, the sun will rise in the morning.

The Colors of the Delta is a brief editorial by Rheta Johnson that portrays a side of the Delta most outsiders never see. Through this editorial Johnson brings to life a poor and ill fated Delta society. She causes the reader to see beyond a Delta that is so often forgotten and written off by the rest of the southern world as a place unworthy of attention and lacking culture.

Throughout her editorial, Johnson presents the Delta as a place that is worthy of more positive attention than is ever given. More often than not New Orleans, Birmingham, or Vicksburg is favored over the Delta as a great place to visit while in the South."But today the forsaken corn is a sad sight beside the green soybeans in huge fields the farmers deem worth irrigating. It's like when one child is favored over another." With these sentences Johnson likens the Delta to the corn crop that has been sadly forgotten. The green soybeans represent the rest of the southern world that is often seen as more southern and genteel than the Delta. She brings forth the fact the Delta has often been used a backdrop for countless political leaders to announce their campaign on poverty. However, Johnson wants her readers to see beyond the poverty that looms over the Delta like a thick fog. Through her editorial Johnson shows that there is so much more to the Delta than the material wealth that is lacking. Rheta points out that even the residents of the Delta did not realize the wealth they possessed until recently. For now, they know they have so much more to share with the world through their God given talents and abilities. Such men like Son Thomas, who sang at the White House and in Delta mansions, have emerged from this little forgotten place in the South. If Birney Imes had never had the Delta for inspiration, he may not have become the photographer he is today. People like Birney and Son knew that the Delta was worthy of the world's full attention. Because of the attention that they payed to the Delta through their music and photography, the rest of the world's eyes are opened to the "Colors of the Delta."

Not only does Johnson present the fact that Delta is overdue on attention, she continually brings forth the fact that the Delta is immensely rich in cultural treasures. She writes, "But there is an undeniable cultural richness too, a real trove of color and talent." Johnson talks of a newspaper bureau downtown where "any reporter worth her weight didn't sit in the office long anyway." Any reporter "worth her weight" knew that there was much in the Delta worth her attention that she need not sit in the bureau long. John Odis, another man Johnson mentions, was virtually unknown, but he is yet another band of color that makes up the rainbow of The Colors of the Delta. He meant so much to the people in the town that he lived in that they took up a collection when he died to pay for a plot to bury him in. The virtually unknown hang outs and people of the Delta are what make the Delta so special. Places like Doe's Eat Place where you can "Buy a coffee can full of hot tamales," and juke joints on the highway near Swan Lake where "Musicians who'll never make more than enough money to pay their light bill had been singing their hearts out," are the places that make the Delta a trove of cultural treasures. With or without occasion "You could hear the blues any night of the week," on Greenville's Nelson Street. Music, food, and undeniable talent have emerged from this little niche in the South over the years.

Just as, "The dead corn can be seen all across the parched Delta, stalks brittle as a banker's collar, brown as a peanut hull," so can the Delta be seen by the rest of the world. In her editorial Johnson acknowledges that most people see the Delta as a poverty stricken place where "The great economic divide runs through this topsoil like a plow," but she shows the side of the Delta that she came to love while living there. She opens her reader's eyes to the brilliant, rich, and attention grabbing "Colors of the Delta."

In order to explain the question briefly, first there are some terms which we need to know.

The first term is what is a proof? Proof is the process or an instance of establishing the validity of a statement especially by derivation from other statements in accordance with principles of reasoning.

After giving the definition of proof, some questions coming to my mind. Some of these questions are how can a person prove something? and is it possible to use this proven thing rest of the life? Of course these are hard questions to answer so I think something, which is proven, must always be true in every situation.

Now, by using the information which is written above I want to explain the question.

In the first place, let's look at mathematics. Mathematics is certainly science in the broad sense of "systematic and formulated knowledge". Mathematics provides the language in which the natural sciences aspire to describe and analyse the universe, there is a natural link between mathematics and natural sciences. The natural sciences investigate the physical universe but mathematics does not, so at this point a question comes to my mind, whether mathematics is essentially similar in method to the natural sicences in spite of the difference in subject matter. I do not think it is.

In mathematics, however, the ultimate arbiter of correctness is proof rather than empirical evidence. This reflects a fundamental diffence in what one is trying to achieve mathematics is concerned with finding certain kinds of necessary truths. For a mathematical statement to be accepted as a theorem, its conclusion must be known to always be true whenever its hypotheses are satisfied. We accept it only when we have a proof a chain of reasoning demonstrating that the conclusion must follow from the hypotheses. Empirical evidence does, to be sure, play an important part in doing mathematics. Conjectures are usually formed by observing a common pattern in a number of examples, and are often tested on other examples before a proof is attempted. However, such evidence is not sufficient by itself consider the assertion that every even integer greater than 4 is the sum of two (not necessarily different) odd prime numbers. We have lots of empirical evidence supporting this assertion 6 = +, 8 = 5+, 10 = 7+ and 10 = 5+5, 1 = 7+5, and so on. However, we cannot be sure it is true unless someone finds a proof. Until then, it is conceivable that someone might find a very big even number which is not the sum of two odd prime numbers.

In the second place, let's look at science. Science is knowledge or a system of knowledge covering general truths or the operation of general laws especially as obtained and tested through scientific method b such knowledge or such a system of knowledge concerned with the physical world and its phenomena natural science. In science we collect empirical evidence through the process of experimentation. If we collect enough evidence, we will probably notice patterns or regularities in the evidence, and then we will develop generalizations that describe what we have observed. These generalized descriptions of observed events are called scientific laws.Scientfic law is a genarilized description, usually expressed in mathematical terms which describes the emperical behaviour of matter. For example I'm dropping a pencil, a book, a ball, a ruler, in fact dropping anything that is heavier than air, and it will fall. The generalized description is the law of gravity (objects that are heavier than air fall when released). Noticing that this doesnt tell us what gravity is, but it does describe its behavior. Of course, if we were to really do this scientifically, wed make measurements about the speed of the fall, and then wed probably state the law as Isaac Newton did mathematically.

So proving something does not make it true. It just means that we have convinced other people that the evidence supports your conclusion. There are many examples in law of people who have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt who were not guilty at all. And most of us probably suspect that there are guilty people who get off. Just as in court, proof in science does not equal truth. No scientist will ever claim that a theory is true. What they will do is state that the evidence agrees with the theory. Of course, sometimes new evidence shows up that we didnt have before. Then in science, as in law, we will reach a new conclusion.

As a conclusion I want to say that we can not prove a scientific theory because scientific theory is probabilistic, not absolute.

The research question for the presentation is based on the idea of Madonna as a pop icon and whether she portrays an image of being an Anti-feminist or not. Madonna image is one that can be described as sexy, erotic and controversially vulgar. We can depict such images from her performances, lyrics and mostly from the image that the media portrays of the famous pop icon. The three main components behind Madonna and her work is her image portrayed, lyrics and symbolic menaing behind her music.

I would like to focus on one of Madonna¡¦s famous songs titled ¡¥Like a Virgin.¡¦ (Please view appendix 1) these lyrics clearly highlight a sense of innocence, the need of a male figure and it blatantly enforces the aspect of sexuality, through the title of the song, ¡¥Like a Virgin,¡¦ Which Madonna clearly is not. From listening and reviewing Madonnas music it seems that the themes represented in her music cover wilderness and survival, sexuality as mentioned before, romance, religion and urban survival. All these themes create a sense of character to the pop icon and some kind of identity for listeners and viewers of her performances.

We can question whether Madonna is a commodity for feminism or not. It would be correct o state that Madonna commodifies herself to accentuate her trademark image of a sex symbol, someone that represents the exploitation of women and the subordination of men. Madonna has the ability to seduce the media through her appearance. Thus making her an attraction to her audience.

After researching in the pp icon and examining her character and aim as a pop icon it wuld be interesting to question whenter Madonna can be classified as an icon that represents te ideology of Anti-Feminism. It is eveident that Madonna conforms to the ideology of patriarchy, she practices patriachla control, and sees into dfeminine resistance, Madonna clarly portrays a sense of individuality.

Madonna can best be described as a role model to her fans. She portrays an image that fulfills the wants and needs of her fans. Nvertheless we can assume that Madonna plays a role that is oiut of her character. She is simoly an icon that creates music and entertainment for the media. This is so becise the possibility of Madonna portraying a false identity and creating a certain culture seems eveident. Does Madonna create acts of feminism thrugh and act of mockery to cater to her audience? Or is Madonna a true feminst? Or can she be labaled as an antifeminist?

Madonna the queen of the world of mass media. Madonna has the ability to accentuate her talent through her music, performance, books and image. Madonna is an extremely popular pop icon not only with todays generation but from before, when she was first discovered throughout the media industry. In the 180¡¦s.

Our group decided on choosing Madonna as our research target because she is one of the most famous celebrities in the world, who portrays figures of ¡§empowerment¡¨ for the female gender as well as ethnic minorities, gays and lesbians. Madonna can be sen as a postmodern cultural icon, her performances challeng the traditional definition of women through keeping control over her life and career.

The definition of feminist and feminism

According to The Collins English Dictionary, 000, the word Feminist is a noun which is a supporter of the word Feminism, Feminism is a doctrine or movement that advocates equal rights for women. But it is just a brief definition only.

Conclusion

After complting our presentationa dn collecting all the relevant research to complete this topic it is eveident that Madonna does not qyalify as a genuine feminist. She seems to fit the role for a capitalist. From Madonna performance we can perceive that Madonnas main concern like any other pop icon, is to gain the popularity between her fans. The successful pop icon, acccentutes elements of equality between the different sex roles She does this throough her, lyrics, movies and character. Madonna aims to attract the female gender and at the same time provokes tem into beliebving and identifying themselves to Madonna. Nevertheless Madonna does also cater to the male gender. We see this though her sexualty, eroticism and also through her many other performance. This is simly a way to prove autonomy, She does this through indirectly entertaining and pleasing the male gender.

Therefore in conclusion, from our research our group has discovered that ,Madonna has exploited a successful marketing strategy that enables her to be labled as a profitable and successful pop icon.

Critical thinking is the process of using the available facts and using them to infer what should be done in a certain situation. For example relating to the IT field, I know that something is not working correctly but I don't know why. First, I need to determine what the last repair was that was made to the machine in question. In order to properly repair the machine, I need to know did another customer engineer add new drivers, did someone delete a file, has a driver become corrupt somehow; all of these questions need to be answered to obtain a proper view of what the problem is.

Decision making is the process where thoughts are turned into actions. Again, I use the IT field as my reference. In using the PC analogy, once you have thought through what the problem could be you must decide what must be done.

In order to be successful, decisions and critical thinking should be intertwined. When using critical thinking you must decide what the most relevant information is and what can be ignored. You must decide what the end result should be. The inherent marriage of decision making and critical thinking is almost impossible to divorce one from the other. This is not to say that it can't be done, but the end result is usually one that ends in disaster rather than success.

When a decision is not critically thought out, mistakes are inevitable. For example You make a decision to purchase a TV larger than the current one you own because it would look better in your living room. You make the purchase but find when you get it out to your VW Bug; you don't have the room to put the 50-inch box. Had true critical thinking played a role in this decision, two things would have happened One, you would have purchased a smaller TV that would fit neatly into your compact sports car or two, pay a delivery charge to completely bypass the issue.

Cheap University Papers on Critical thinking and descision making

The above illustration backs up the idea that critical thinking can greatly improve and simplify your life. First and foremost, it allows you to filter out the irrelevant information and aide in process of getting to the heart of the issue. Second, decisions can be made with a greater amount of accuracy. Using critical thinking can ease complicated scheduling issues. It enables you to prioritize your activities for the day and to ensure that any new undertakings are realistically sequenced and slotted into your schedule.

I personally am required to use critical thinking every single day in my employment. Working for a nationally known company, not only do I have a reputation to uphold, I have a client base that must be kept satisfied with my level of provided service. These clients have a significant financial impact on the earnings for my company. Using critical thinking is a must do in order to maintain my position with NCR. In any given day, I am inundated with service calls. One day, for example, I may have a majority of my calls in a local driving area and one call that is several hours drive away. I must assess the level of service we are contracted to provide the clients and work out a way to take care of the hot issues. If the in town calls are just vicinity or preventative maintenance calls, I automatically ascertain that the out of town call needs to be taken care of first to ensure customer delight and corporate wide satisfaction. If this decision is made incorrectly, clients can impose fines, demand refunds, and ultimately, not renew their contract. Critical thinking allows me to maintain satisfied clients and ensure my company is gaining clients and revenue.

I also use critical thinking while trouble shooting issues at a client site. I am given very limited information when assigned a call in my work queue. From the little information supplied to me, I need to find out who originally placed the call and collect the detailed information from them. Typically, the answers I do receive are just as vague as the information initially given at the time of assignment. At this point, I must first find the offending unit, assess the symptoms try and dissect and diagnose what the root cause of the failure is. The trick is to do this without replacing parts at random until the unit is once again repaired and working. By utilizing my own critical thinking skills, I am able to save myself time and frustration and the company and client money.

Decision making and critical thinking are not only found in the workplace, but in my personal life as well. Utilizing these two processes in conjunction with other processes like follow through are definite ways to set ones self up for success in most endeavors undertaking.

A major theme that runs though Charlotte's Web is that of cycles of life, especially death and rebirth. Many things change for the characters in chapter 1. Wilbur goes though a metaphorical birth and death. Charlotte is at the start of her physical death and rebirth. And Fern has moved on from her friendship with Wilbur.

This is highlighted at the start of chapter 1. The chapter starts at the beginning of a new day, this is symbolic of what is about to go on in the story. The start of a new day is the start of that days 'life' or the start of its cycle. When night comes it the day 'die's' it comes to the end of its cycle. And the next day it is 'reborn' and it starts its cycle again. This mirrors the metaphorical death and rebirth Wilbur is about to go on and the Charlotte's physical death and rebirth.

Wilbur (if has know it or not) has been avoiding death all his life. When he was first born Mr Arable was going to kill him for being a runt. But he was saved by Fern. At the Zuckerman's farm the goose told him that he was going to be killed in wintertime. Charlotte then saved his life by writing words in her web, that show everyone just how special he was. In Chapter 18 Wilbur is worried about his life again. He asks Charlotte if she thinks he will die at wintertime. Charlotte replies that she think he will win the prize. He might even live-forever? Wilbur then asks what she is doing; she replies that she is making something for herself. Charlotte seems a little different.

Chapter 1 changes the focus from Wilbur trying to prolong death onto Charlottes impending death. The theme of life cycles is raised again when Charlotte lets Wilbur that she wont be able to see her children in spring.

If the next season is spring it is logical to assume that that it would be very close to winter. Both winter and spring have connotations that reflect the story. Charlotte dies in winter which is symbolic of death, and she metaphorically is reborn though her children especially 'Joy', 'Aranea' and 'Nellie'

It's interesting to note that Charlotte dose her greatest work in the last moments of her life. She have laid all her children, and wrote the words that will ensure Wilbur a long life in her web. She dies soon after.

Her physical rebirth will take place in the form of her childen and especially …

Wilbur's metaphorical death starts the moments Charlotte lets him that she is dieing. Though the text never dwells on Wilbur's response it can be assumed that he would be never sad to here his as he is a very loving and caring pig. He looks up to Charlotte as a mother figure. He might also feel guilty that she has spent all this time protecting him, while her own life is slipping by her.

This bad new is immediately impacted with more bad news from Templeton. He tells them that the pig next door has won the prize. And he suggests that Mr Zuckerman might 'change his mind on him' this feeds into Wilbur's insecurities. Wilbur becomes doubly paranoid as he knows he wont have Charlotte to protect him anymore. Also (though Wilbur doesn't know it) Fern has grown apart from him. He was now lost all the people he hold close to him. His 'rebirth' happens when he has a realisation of his true identity. When Charlotte writes 'Some Pig' Wilbur doubt's that he really is 'Some Pig'. Next when Charlotte writes 'Terrific' he tells Charlotte that he isn't Terrific. When she writes 'Radiant' he starts to believe that he is radiant.

It is interesting why Charlotte has chosen the word 'humble' as her last message to the world. She has chosen this word because it best typifies Wilbur. Charlotte examples to Templeton the duel meaning of the words humble 'Not Proud' describes his personality and on a lighter not it describes his physicality as he is 'near the ground'. His 'rebirth' happens when Mr Zuckerman says "Now isn't that the word for Wilbur" Because Mr Zuckerman is rejoicing in who Wilbur is, not that there is writing in the Web. This makes Wilbur been loved and safe. Wilbur fears are but the rest when he wins the special prize.

This chapter is also about Fern's moving on. While both the families are morning the loss of the prize Fern is more interested in the attractions of the fair, she asks her mother for money and she is abruptly cut down. She cries because of it, not because Wilbur has lost first prize.

After the find out that Wilbur will get a special prize Fern is excited but this is short lived as she soon asks for more money, once again she is denied.

This shows she would rather play at the fair than see Wilbur get his prize. At the end of the chapter we find out that she wants to go play with 'Henry Fern'.

It can be seen that Chapter 1 deals with the themes of 'life cycles, metaphorical, and physical 'death' and 'rebirth'. The language, style and structure takes Wilbur though a metaphorical birth and death, and Charlotte though the beginnings of her physical death and rebirth.

Iago, a solider, in the play Othello, The Moor of Venice, and Arnold Friend, a character in the short story "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been", are villains that share similar methods. Both villains use lies, deception, and taunt their victims to succeed in their evil schemes.

Iago, a soldier, who serves under Othello, is a military leader he hates with a passion. Not only was Iago passed up by Othello in promotion, but Othello also slept with his wife. Throughout the play Iago portrays himself to Othello as a friend, someone he can trust, but early in the play we learn that Iago is in to destroy Othello to succeed in his own self-revelation.

"I follow him to serve my turn upon him. We cannot all be masters, nor all masters cannot be truly followed….. Keep yet their hearts attending on

themselves, and, throwing but shows of service on their lords, do well thrive by them, and when they have lined their coats, do themselves homage……Where I the Moor I would not be Iago. In following him, I follow but myself- heaven is my judge, not I for love and duty, but seeming so for my peculiar end. For when my out ward action doth demonstrate the native act and figure of my heart in compliment extern, 'tis not long after but I will wear my heart upon my sleeve for daws to peck at. I am not what I am (Shakespeare, 61)."

Othello is blind to Iago's dishonesty, he confides in Iago for advice regarding Desdemona.

"My life upon her faith! Honest Iago, my Desdemona must I leave to thee. I prithee, let thy wife attend on her, and bring them after in the best advantage….(Shakespeare, 650)."

Arnold Friend, a peculiar individual in his forties, is a crazed man. He has eyes you couldn't forget. They looked as though they were chips of broken glass, and he also has a reassuring smile. A smile that could be trusted, but unbeknown to Connie, she too would be a victim of lies and deception.

"I know your name and all about you, lots of things," Arnold Friend said. "I took a special interest in you, such a pretty girl, and found out all about you like I know your parents and sister are gone somewheres and I know where and how long they're going to be gone, and I know who you were with last night, and your best girl friend's name (Oates, 1)."

Iago and Arnold Friend are both masters of deception, lying to their victims to gain their trust.

Another scheme Iago and Arnold Friend master, is the way they intimidate others.

Iago harasses his wife Emilia, calling her names, to give him a handkerchief that she had found. Not knowing that Iago would use this evidence against Desdemona, Emilia's lady, to destroy her marriage with Othello.

"You have a thing for me? It is a common thing- to have a foolish wife…. A good wench! Give it me (Shakespeare, 6)."

Arnold Friend talks to his victim Connie has if she is a helpless child. Brain washing her to do as he says.

"Yes, I'm your lover. You don't know what that is but you will," he said. "I know that too. I know all about you. But look it's real nice and you couldn't ask for nobody better than me, or more polite….I'll hold you so tight you won't think you have to try to get away or pretend anything because you'll know you can't. And I'll come inside you where it's all secret and you'll give in to me and you'll love me (Oates, 1)."

"…. you had to wash your hair and you washed it for me. It's nice and shining an all for me, I thank you sweetheart (Oates, 14)."

Admiring their work is what villains enjoy the most. Iago savors the moment when he knows he as defeated Othello. After Iago's first plan failed, he thrived on bringing Othello to his death. He doesn't win and ravish in his evil work until he finally prevails in defeating Othello.

"And what's he then that says I play the villain, when this advice is free I give, and honest, probal to thinking, and indeed the course to win the Moor again? For 'tis most easy th' inclining Desdemona to subdue as fruitful as the free elements…How am I then a villain, to counsel Cassio to his parallel course directly to his good…. As I do now. For whiles this honest fool plies Desdemona to repair his fortune, and she for him pleads strongly to the Moor, I'll pour this pestilence in to his ear…. So will I turn her virtue into pitch, and out of her own goodness make the net that shall enmesh them all (Shakespeare, 676,677)."

As for Arnold Friend, he gets gratification watching his victim obey his ever last command. Speaking to his victim as if she is under his hypnosis. Connie concentrates on his voice as if he is casting a magic spell.

"Now turn this way. That's right. Come over here to me-Ellie, put that away, didn't I tell you? You dope. You miserable creepy dope. Now come out through the kitchen to me honey and let's see a smile, try it, you're a brave sweet little girl (Oates, 16)."

Masters of deception, lies, and succeeding in conquering their evil plans, both Iago and Arnold Friend partake in similar methods as villains.

Going Home Again

In Paule Marshall's novel Brown Girl, Brownstones the story takes place in the America of the 150ties where union with the ideals, values and traditions that declare one an "American" is only possible beneath one skin, the white skin. Every other skin exists in a fractured double consciousness; lost in duality, vainly seeking a unification which endlessly eludes the non-white experience. W.E.B Dubois wrote in his paper The Souls of Black Folk "Why did God make me an outcast and a stranger in mine own house?" Selina, the central character of Brown Girl, Brownstones, is an outcast and a stranger in two worlds; the Bajan world of her mother and the American world of her birth but this is a choice that Selina makes as she seeks an identity that is her own.

A child's identity is obtained through the union of their parents; Selina's small soul cannot take root in the war torn home of her parents. The constant struggle between her parents destroys her sense of wholeness by dividing her consciousness between them. In contrast to the placid and unquestioning countenance of her friend Beryl, Selina is a fiercely independent thinker. At Beryl's party Selina questions Beryl "I mean what do you say about anything? You begin everything with 'My father says this or that' or 'my father's gonna give me this or that '___ but what do you say, what do you want?"(Marshall 17). Beryl's willingness to be led by her father and the Bajan group fills Selina with an apprehension she does not understand. Selina is drawn to the security of Beryl's father directed life but also repelled by her total acquiescence to the authority of the group. Selina's rejection of what she cannot have (the committed unified family) makes an outsider of her.

It is this obeisance to the group that Selina's father was also unable to tolerate. But his reasons are very different from Selina's because his need to be important is the impetus behind his rejection of the Bajan community and its values. When Deighton spitefully shops away the $00.00 that Silla wants to use as a down payment for the brownstone she makes sure the entire Bajan Community knows. At the wedding Deighton becomes aware of the power of the group when they mock him with their song "Small Island go back where you come from" (Marshall 150). It is at this point that Selina also awakens to the power of her mother's community as she tries unsuccessfully to reach her father Marshall states, "My father's here. Lemme go" and again she struggled without success. Not only Beryl but the glaring lights, the loud song and the others dancers seemed to be holding her from him". (Marshall 14). When Deighton loses the use of his arm in an accident he gives up everything that is of value to him including his family and his identity and becomes whatever Father Peace requires of him. Sensing his weakness, Selina is unable to hold her father accountable for anything and instead she blames her mother and the Bajan community for the loss of her father. Her rejection of the entire Bajan community and its ideals is a means of punishing her larger than life mother who Selina sees as "the mother" rather than "my mother".

Unable to choose between her father's world and her mother's she rejects the Bajan world that represents them both and for a time assimilates into the American world through living the American experience. Life at the University that Selina attends becomes a vehicle for the "American experience" but the university life unwittingly deceives Selina simply by its focus on intellectual learning and creative expression. The University, as well as Selina's protected Bajan community, cannot prepare her to deal with the racism that is fundamental to the real world of the "American experience". When confronted with the hurtful prejudiced of the white American world Selina's spirit is for a time shattered. Marshall states "It would intrude in every corner of her life, tainting her small triumphsas it had tonight and exulting at her defeats." (Marshall 1). At the core of this destructive sense of powerlessness is the belief that her blackness is bad Marshall writes "the part of her that had long hated her for her blackness and thus begrudged her each small success like the one tonight". (Marshall 8) This self-hatred reveals a dual consciousness common to the African American reality and thus declares Selina an American not a Bajan.

. Selina's inability to reconcile the opposing philosophies of her parents causes a dual consciousness in Selina that makes her susceptible to the double standards of American life. This double consciousness is revealed under the attack of Meg's mother forcing Selina to acknowledge her own internalized self-hate. However Selina's rejection of the Bajan world and the perceived rejection of Selina by white America forces Selina to seek a new identity in her parent's homeland. It is the first act of true independence for Selina; when she gives permission to herself to pursue her father's dream of going home again.

The short story "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez exposes the tendencies of human nature and society in general. The reactions of all the members of the community to the events in the story reflect their inclinations as human beings, both good and bad.

Pelayo lives in rural area with his wife and child. One afternoon he was shocked to find that a very old man with wings was lying face down in the mud in his courtyard. At first he was frightened and ran to retrieve his wife to see what she would make of it. Upon her arrival they had both stared at the man together in a mute stupor for quite some time. This is a typical reaction from most people in such a situation. At first they were in a state of fear, fear of the unfamiliar. When people are exposed to a scenario that is out of the ordinary for them and conflicts with their everyday lives they grow afraid and even hostile. Then a stage of curiosity follows, Pelayo and his wife quietly observe the man from a distance as to gather any information they can about him. After observing the man who seemed frail and uncivilized they decide to call upon a neighbour who might be knowledgeable in such situations. She wasted no time in proclaiming that he must be an "angel". Her reaction to the man with wings was influenced purely by her faith. Her blind assumption was made because of what she has been taught and what she wanted to believe. This is typical of people who are very religious as they tend to interpret various events as having a deeper more meaningful significance.

"The angel was held captive in Pelayo's house." (Marquez 487) Marquez's choice of words reflects her intention to show Pelayo's hostility towards the angel. He also watched over him all afternoon with a bailiff's club. He is obviously uncertain of the angel and decides to imprison him and take no chances. He does not think very much of the angel because he "drags" him into in a chicken coop and locks him up among the hens. This act demonstrates basic human nature, the angel was old, unattractive, and decrepit, so he tosses him in a filthy coop. Pelayo judges him solely on his appearance, had the "angel" looked like an angel is supposed to like and had been all white, attractive, and sophisticated, Pelayo would most likely honour and respect him rather than treat him like an animal. Pelayo even considered putting him on a raft and leaving him to die on the high seas.

The members of the community quickly learned of this "angel" that has been found and they became very interested.

"The simplest among them thought that he should be named mayor of the world. Others of sterner mind felt that he should be prompted to the rank of five-star general in order to win all wars. Some

visionaries hoped that he could be put to stud in order to implant on earth a race of winged wise

who could take charge of the universe." (Marquez 488)

This shows the hopes and expectations of the members of the community. Many had dreams of grandeur and had relied on this angel to put an end to all worldly problems as if he was sent down from god. These expectations however were not rational, they were merely based on their own beliefs and the hype that this angel had generated. Human beings in general are always looking for the easy way out and the simplest way to get a means to their end. This angel served as the answer they had all hoped for.

As the story moves forward the people of the town come to realise that this angel was not at all what they had expected nor hoped for. They have grown hostile towards him, they had begun pulling out his feathers, throwing stones at him, or even burning him with an iron. This type of reaction is not unusual in such a situation, they have grown bored of this angel as he does nothing but lie still and try to make himself comfortable. This type of behaviour is exemplified in everyday life in the case of celebrities. As entertainers they keep us amused and fulfill our needs, but when their product turns stale or their songs get played out we lose interest and turn against them. We see this everyday on late night television where hosts poke fun at such celebrities, recently we have seen what the media hype has done to Michael Jackson's reputation. Meanwhile the carnival has come into town and suddenly everyone has forgotten about the angel and stopped caring. Why see the angel when you can see the tarantula woman? Something bigger and better has arisen and the people of the community have moved on to the next big thing.

Why do people act the way they do? Is it selfishness? It is a fact that man's greatest goal is his own happiness, therefore he can sometimes be insensitive to the people that he walks all over in order to achieve it. Altruism is possible, but even then man gains some satisfaction from his unselfish act, which contributes to his happiness. The society in this short story perfectly reflects human nature and how it sometimes can be ugly. However, for the most part individuals are able to differentiate what is and is not moral and act decently.
