I found the introduction of this book, as well as the entire concept of the introduction to be extremely unique and very intriguing. I found it interesting that the very

first page states that as one reads the book, they encourage you to imagine that the

author is speaking to you, and the reader is able to speak back. I found this to be a very different and unique way of reading as well as interpreting the authors words. Throughout the first few pages, the introduction makes it very clear that the reader is not expected to comprehend everything he or she has read during the first attempt. In fact the book specifically mentions "No reader could retain one of these essays in her mind no matter how proficient her memory or how experienced she might be"(Bartholomae and

Petrosky 8). I was very relieved by this and I am glad they expressed this in the book.

I do realize however, that these stories are going to challenge my composition as well

as my attention span.

Throughout the introduction, it mentions an essay called " The Achievement

of Desire". I very much enjoyed this aspect of the book, because I was able to relate to both sides of the debate of Rodriguez's loss versus his gain. I appreciate the fact that the authors chose to summarize this story throughout the introduction because it gave me a better understanding of the types of stories I am about to read as well as the different

ways of looking at them. I also enjoyed how the authors discussed both sides of Rodriguez's options regarding his family, opposed to his education. I feel it gave the

reader a new perspective of what it means to create your own theory. It was not until I

read these arguments that I truly understood what the writers meant by taking a deeper

look into the story, and thinking outside of the box. I also enjoyed this story because,

like the authors said, I could relate to Rodriguez in some form. He was forced to make a difficult decision, and in his mind it was either his family, or the gain of knowledge.

Everyone in life has been forced to make a difficult decision like Rodriguez, and because

of this I understand that the writers of this book, not only want you to read the stories, but relate to them.

Another reason I found this book intriguing is because I was able

to understand that the reader should search for more then just the main points of the

story. The reader is not on a constant search for hidden meanings, or new interpretations

of stories. The essay is simply meant to be what the reader thought of it. I also found

it interesting that the words on the pages are not necessarily going to be self

explanatory, opposed to most books I have read in the past, it will take understanding

and comprehending the words in order to process your own theory. I found the ways

of reading discussed in this book are unlike any reading strategies I have experienced

in the past. The stories in this book are theoretical and complex opposed to books

that I am used to that are based on fiction and are less complicated to understand.

This proposed way of reading is designed to help you identify the ways in which

stories make its meaning, and taking each section step by step, underlining and hilighting

the important aspects of the stories. They do not give a sense of how one goes

about analyzing an essay, or a specific strategy to reading. It is difficult to give a

prescription, as different stories are based on different aspects of meanings, different

ways of reading, and different relationships between theories.

Towards the end of the introduction, the writers mention a series a comprehensive essay questions. I believe they will be the most challenging seeing as though I have never experienced ways of reading like this before. I am not going to gain the answers to these questions by discovering the main idea or the climax of the story.

I will discover them by working through the story little by little, however, I am looking

forward to taking on a new challenge, and opening my horizons to new and challenging ways of learning. I believe that reading against the grain will truly force me to stretch my limits by introducing a new and thought provoking way of interpreting the authors words. Although the writers of this book do not discourage you from seeking other people's opinions on these stories, the authors clearly state that the majority of the knowledge one will gain is not going to come from notes on paper or any sort of expert. It will come from truly understanding the story as well as comprehending your own theories. The writers make it clear that "it is not about what the stories mean to other people but rather, what

the stories mean to you"(10).

In a sense of speaking, doing the job one has been trained to do, does not necessarily mean the person is experienced and does a great job. To be experienced is to do extra outside the specialized workplace to which comes the ability to do things that are not necessarily required to be done. This is why we as school children are required to take general education in college. School children keep whining about the fact of having to take general education in college and say that they hardly help them in their future careers. General education does help a lot; we just don't see it in ourselves but through other. General education might not seem as an important component of our schooling, but if a deep look is taken into its effect on school children, it does have a lot of importance, and the more reason it needs to stay in the university curriculum.

There are many discussions I hear around campus about students doing classes that totally have nothing to do with what they are majoring in, such as, majoring in nursing and having to do freshman composition or American history. Having taken a religion class has no direct relationship to becoming a psychologist whatsoever, but once a big picture is seen, a great career starts with a well-matured mind and stable background.

Job opportunities these days have a great correlation with general education. According to most employers, it's not how well you do your job; it's how well you do what's not your job. They look for someone who is more open-minded rather than fixed on what they have been trained to do. Most jobs require the ability to communicate effectively and to deal with certain life situations that don't directly deal with the profession. For instance, a nurse might not necessarily have to do psychology or freshman composition, but in order to effectively communicate and socialize with patients, these courses do play a big role. Most professional careers have almost everything to do with interaction skills and general education has everything to do with achieving that. Without general education, a career would become an experience worth living for.

For those that don't really have a stable ground as to what they want to do in their future, general education has come to be known to open up the window of potential career choices. General education helps one to choose what he or she would like to do in the future. General education has been known to keep an open door for a graduate, so to speak; it leaves so many opportunities for future profession taking. I could be a simple physician, but have done psychology in university, I could easily help out somebody who is having cognitive or mental problems. I could have a minor specialty of general psychology.

General education does not only correlate only with careers. General education also has something to do with relationships with others as a whole. For instance, if I were someone who just took my required classes for med school, I would become more of a non-sociable person. I would probably become an introvert and someone who wouldn't be able to deal with small issues of life. General education such as religion, history, psychology, and freshman composition would help me in my relationship with my still-to-come children. In order to be successfully socially and spiritually, especially at Southwestern Adventist University, general education plays a major role.

General education builds great-minded humans. Just the other day I had participated in the 'Annual Alumni Fund Phonathon', and came to realize that many doctors and teachers came to be what they are from Southwestern Adventist University. They talked so well on the phone and were very interactive. To be honest, no one who I called was rude or had nothing to say to me. I also had some long conversations with many of the alumni. General education had to have a role as to what these alumni came to be. This is why it has to be left in the curriculum. Both private and government schools need to keep the standard of doing general education because the betterment of the future of school children is instilled by general education. The government and the people need to realize how much this education does to the school children. The children themselves need to realize how much general education is doing to them and their future. General education is like the heartbeat . . . the cornerstone of a career and we all need to make sure that it stays in our schools and that it never fades away because if it does, all will break loose.

Please note that this sample paper on General Education is for your review only. Cathleen Cleaver, counsel to the U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee on the Constitution, delivered a speech at Boston University in October 17. During her speech, she maintains the importance of the government imposing laws on the Internet to regulate peoples conduct especially where children could fall as victims. Cleaver does a really good job of using ethos, logos and particularly pathos in her argument to her audience which probably consisted mostly of parents.

Cleaver worked in Washington D.C., at the Family Research Center. This position gives the persona of someone with family values and an advocacy for children. In paragraph three of Cleavers speech, she claims that the Internet can be a "clear and present danger" if there are no laws to regulate peoples conduct, especially where children are concerned. Pornography, specifically, is highly accessible to anyone using the Internet. There is little restriction put on people posting pornographic material on the Internet. Cleaver uses ethos, as a professional, educated, activist to reach out to the public, specifically parents, to speak out to the government and try to have laws passed that will protect the children. In paragraph 1, Cleaver states that opponents to the restrictions being put on the Internet feel that it is up to the parents to monitor their childrens use on the Internet. But, she argues that although there is software to prevent accessing adult sites, there are always ways around them. Children are finding their way into forums that show them how to bypass the protective software, and there is still access to other computers at libraries or at a friends house. Cleaver is wanting to put an idea into these parents heads that will make them react angrily to what is being allowed on the Internet and hopefully cause them to push for laws protecting children.

The Internet does not belong to pornographers! Using logos, Cleaver describes in paragraph six how the

pornography industry is "the third largest sector of sales on the Internet, generating $1 billion annually." "The Washington Post has called the Internet the largest pornography store in the history of mankind." The posting and accessibility can all be done in the convenience of ones home without worry of risks or ones identity being found out according to the tenth paragraph. Paragraph 11 shows Cleavers beliefs that pornography on the Internet "celebrates unhealthy and antisocial kinds of sexual activity, such as sadomasochism, abuse, and degradation." Cleaver thinks there should be some restrictions put on the Internet by the government because the government seems to have control over every other kind of medium. Maybe the search engines could be stopped from running ads to porn sites and Internet Service Providers should monitor chat rooms designed for children as she argues in paragraph sixteen.

Cleavers use of pathos is probably the most effective device she uses to create fear and shock in the audience of exactly what is going on on the Internet. The scenarios she creates in paragraph one are startling and put an impression in everyones mind of what could happen not only to adults but to innocent children. Pedophiles are able to log on to websites as a child-user and build a trust with another child to fascinate them with pornography they can email to them and possibly find out where they live. This is all described in paragraph nine. In paragraphs 1 and 0, Cleaver stresses that "technology by its very nature requires unconditional respect for the fundamental interests of society" and "it must respect the prerogatives of a civil society, among which is protection of children." These statements are attempting to make the audience respond by wanting to protect their children from this horrible monster.

After reading Cleavers speech, I felt the need to heighten my awareness as far as what my children were accessing on the Internet and to also educate them on being careful in chat rooms. I did this by stressing to them that they never give out personal information to anyone. Cleaver did an excellent job at putting thoughts and images in my mind of terrible things that could happen, and Im sure she did this to her audience on the day of her speech.

Brett Lady Ashley

Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises begins with Gertrude Stein's quotation "You are all a lost generation." In the book, Hemingway's world is a world where the power swifts from masculine hand to feminine, or at least where that shift helps to take power, so in the hands of Brett Lady Ashley.

"Brett and Jake emerge as the paradigmatic couple who best represent the shift in the

perception of gender following World War I. This redefinition of masculinity and

femininity was not an abrupt rift in the cultural landscape but rather a gradual shifting

of the ground on which the edifice of Victorian sexual identity was built." (Kert).

With the loss of the confidence of masculine invincibility and authority after the war, came an indifferent attitude that is a compensatory position for a new awareness of vulnerability.

"For a long time, I had seen nothing sacred, and the things that were glorious had no

glory and the sacrifices were like the stock yards in Chicago if nothing was done

with the meat except by it" (Hemingway A Farewell to Arms).

Hemingway's definition of courage, which he succinctly phrased as "grace under pressure," is directed to women who felt helpless to meet the demands of their sacrificial role. Brett Lady Ashley illustrates feminism post World War I but pre-Valerie Solanas.

Brett Lady Ashley's physical appearance presents her controlling stance in society. Not only does she wear a man's hat and have a man's haircut, but also her name is predominately associated with a male. Although she has many masculine features, she is the ideal woman as well. With her blonde hair and striking beauty the "blonde bombshell" theory comes in effect. Brett also has a motherly instinct to nurture and be needed by the men she uses. Mike observes that Brett "loves looking after people" (0). Brett is caught between two modes of gender representation- that of a self-reliant modern woman and the idealized woman on the pedestal. She is both the idealized other whom men seek as a prize for their ability and the sovereign woman who tires to make her own decisions. Although she has broken the connection between moral and physical purity, she still plays the redemptive role of trying to save men through her sexuality.

Sex is ultimately Brett's weapon towards men. Brett is described as promiscuous because of this. Though Georgette is a prostitute, she is considered a more ethical character than Brett. Brett is wanton simply for entertainment, where Georgette is dependent on it for financial support. Brett likes to keep her options open, diversify her investment of social and sexual energy, so that she may maximize her opportunities. Interestingly, Brett breaks up her relationships when her lovers attempt to claim her, that is, to exercise authority over her. She even leaves the bullfighter Romero, a man to whom she is overwhelmingly attracted, when he shows signs of wanted to domesticate her. He tell her to give up her mannish felt hat, to let her hair grow long, to wear more modest clothes. But she has rejected the ideal of female dependence and delicacy. "He wanted me to grow my hair out. Me, with long hair. I'd look so like hell" (46).

Brett is fickle and uses men for sex and money. Brett has some money from her second husband, from whom she has separated. She also depends on her ability to attract men who will pay for her drinks, her dinners, her taxis and trains. And just as she expects men to pay for many of her self-indulgent pleasures, most of the men in the novel do. Brett's lack of financial and emotional independence is clearly stated in the opening paragraphs of the novel; Hemingway observes that Brett has a "grand vitality" but that she "has never been very good at being alone."

"Approximately 8 million soldiers died in the trenches on Western Europe in the years 114-118" (Fussell "The Great War and Modern Memory"). This laid a foundation for the women to take a step forward, and become more independent- a large step for feminism. For a long time, men were men. But, sacrifice and glory redefined men and after a long time of being "men", men and women find themselves changed. Nevertheless, Hemingway points out, the sun will rise in the morning.

Of all the sins staining the American conscience, the decimation of the Native Americans and the systematic destruction of most facets of their way of life weighs no heavier. James Welch's historical novel Fool's Crow traces the life of one Lone Eater as he comes of age and his people and his way of life are ravaged by disease and the onslaught of the American nation's Manifest Destiny. Focused on the universal human condition and the perspective of Native Americans, Welch teaches us the history of a culture and a people that were laid as sacrifice upon the altar of the American nation by the basest instincts of human nature.

The Lone Eaters customs and beliefs surrounding marriage are similar to those of white society in late 1800's and in some ways they are distinctly different. The husband is expected to be the provider in Blackfeet society. Thus, some modicum of wealth and assets as well as an ability to hunt is seen as necessary before taking a bride. Fast Horse makes us aware of this fact at the outset of novel before the raid on the Crow camp when he tell White Man's Dog that "Many women already find me attractive but their fathers know I am without wealth (7)." Wealth in this instance is horses, which are the most valued asset amongst the Lone Eaters. This point is further reinforced when Heavy Shield Women says to White Mans Dog just prior to him marrying her daughter "'And what about you, young man? Now that you are rich and powerful, it is time for you take a wife (104)." Marriages are, if not totally arranged, at least subject to parents approval. Wanting to marry Red Paint, White Man's Dog implores his spiritual mentor Mik-api to assist him. Mik-api reminds him that "First, you must go to your father and mother and tell them of your intentions (105)." After much consternation over White Man's Dog taking a bride who is of such a needy family his father says, "Your mother and I give you permission, son. You may propose a marriage to Red Paint and her family (106)." The two had not ever spoken to each other a week before the marriage, but this was of little consequence. The families exchanged gifts, and the marriage and festivities took place (107). All this happened within a weeks time and on her wedding night Red Paint brooded over the idea that "Less than seven sleeps ago, marriage had been the furthest thing from her thoughts (108)." Many tribal men as they became older and more influential within the tribe took multiple wives. White Man's Dog talks at length of his fathers third wife early on in the novel (87).

Cheap University Papers on The Meaning of "To His Coy Mistress"

Lone Eater society was a patriarchy and women were generally in a subservient position. Men fulfilled the role of provider; to be a good provider in Lone Eater society meant in the simplest sense that the husband had the ability to hunt and feed his wife or wives and their children. Much as in white society, women were things to be acquired and gained. A man had to prove his ability to be a good provider in order to gain women. This attitude is seen clearly in Fast Horse's remarks at the outset of the novel when he advises White Man's Dog to "go to your father's lodge and dream of all those women you desire. With the Crow horses they will be yours and you won't have to mount the dogs (8)." Women tended the home. Red paint is seen at work "rubbing brains and grease into a deerskin to make it soft (64)." Later, Rides-at-the door, wishing to smoke with his son, addresses his wife as "Woman!" ordering her to "Bring tobacco (5)." The power structure within the tribes was dominated by men. This fact is illustrated when Welch tells of the All Friends society meeting upon Yellow Kidney's return as "The women who had served the men were gone (7)." They did not stay to hear Yellow Kidney's retelling of his misfortune, but rather served the meal and left the meeting. During his retelling the reality of how devalued women were in Lone Easter society is further reinforced when Yellow Kidney tells of how he raped a young women while hiding from the Crows during the raid. Though she was a Crow woman and not of his tribe, it is still a clear illustration of how he regarded women. Though they were subservient to the men their work as artisans was highly valued. In Yellow Kidney's absence Red Paint used her fine craftsmanship to help provide for her family. Her particular skill was with moccasins. Welch tells of how "She was good and her elaborate patterns were becoming the talking of the camp (5)." Amidst the small-pox ravaged camp and land seizures of the whites later in the novel her work is admired still as she "wore a dress of elkskin trimmed several rows of elk teeth (8)." They were unquestionably in a subservient position, but there were instances when men regarded them with respect. In the wake of Rides-at-the-door discovery that his younger son was having an affair with Kills-close-to-the-lake grants her her freedom and banishes her from his house sending her to be with her kin (4). Rides-at-the-door shows decency and mercy toward his unfaithful wife.

This seems to be the question that the Ft. Walton Beach High School football team thrived on. Having just come off of a -8 season, we were not the heavy favorites to go anywhere. But my teammates and I didn't let this factor determine how our season was going to end. I knew we had the ingredients of success that would enable us to beat the odds

The number one ingredient that made us successful on the battle field was the ability to learn to believe in ourselves and each other. Going into the season we did not have many supporters, one of these doubters was myself. Having felt the sting of the previous losing -8 season, I did not expect much out of the upcoming one, but I thought, Heck, I've put four years into this I might as well see it through. It was slow in coming, but the belief that we could make something happen began to sneak up on us. (Add something that says that you practiced hard and long with lots of sweat and blood and also some broken bones and spirits. ) We began to think of ourselves as a contender for the state title; in fact our motto became, ONE FOR ALL, ALL FOR ONE, TOGETHER WE STAND, TOGETHER WE FALL, 1… … … STATE. By the time the season began to roll around we had coaxed our dim belief in ourselves into a raging inferno. Obstacles would present themselves, but we would overcome them because we believed.

Our next two ingredients went simultaneously with the efforts the team put forth. Our coaches and the conditions we dealt with to become a contending finalist team led us to become both faithful and loyal to our teammates. (This sounds confusing???) When I crossed the white lines and took up my position as receiver, I had faith that my quarterback would provide me with the ball and if not, he would determine the right decision. If I found the ball over-thrown soaring by my head or my quarterback buried underneath a pile of the other teams jerseys, I still remained loyal to my quarterback and attacked the next play with the same confidence as the last one. What I believe encouraged these traits, was having God as the backbone of our team. Our coaches and teammates presented us with a worshipful way of playing football. We began taping our wrists before each game and dedicating that game to someone by writing their name on the tape. I dedicated mine to the team, because in the end I was simply playing for the men next to me. After each game we circled up to return the thanks for being blessed with another victory or just being able to gather beneath the stars (to artsy fartsy) to wage this battle of grit iron determination.

As soon as we found our belief in ourselves and our loyalty and faith to one another, we learned determination. The season truly began in the summer at 800am Monday practices that lasted through the whole week. We met each practice with strength and a determination so we would be able to make a statement with the way this years season was going to turn out. Next, there was Camp Timpoochee, which will always hold a warm spot in many of our hearts. (warm spot…I don't think so.) We were fortunate enough to be spared that camp this season, in favor for another. (Delete this, it doesn't make sense and takes away from the essay) To call it a football boot camp would be the only thing that would do it justice. But, our burning determination drove us though those rough times. When we cleared the rough terrain, our eye opened and we realized that we had something special going for us. We took out our locked up emotions from last year on our first opponent. Least we say, we saw the light at the end of the tunnel. Our hard work and determination had gotten us the first of many victories to come. Cheap Custom Essays on "Football Essay"

These are just a few of the fruits that I have reaped and will continue to reap from that season. I feel sometimes that I have experienced an event in life when you transcend the bonds of the individual and become part of something bigger. I desperately wish I could finish by telling you that we threw all our cards on the table and overcame all of the insurmountable odds and that I wear my state ring with pride. But, perhaps that will be the turnout for a future team. (it was your dream too) We fell short of our goal by just three games but we seniors could leave the field knowing we had laid the foundation for the teammates we were leaving behind. I can only hope that they will strive to keep this tradition of excellence and continue to pursue their dreams, just like the FWBHS 0-00 football team fought to do.
