Block Scheduling Pro's and Con's

Many high schools in our country have a block-scheduling plan. This includes several high schools in Maury County. There are many good things and bad things about block scheduling. Block scheduling can help or hurt students depending on how well the student learns or how difficult learning is for the student. Block scheduling is longer class time, which consists of about an hour and a half to two hours. Some people do well with longer class time and some people don't.
One of the pros of block scheduling is that a teacher can spend more time on their subject in one day. Students have been known to learn more in a class that they have a particular interest in. With the prolonged class time the teacher can get very detailed with the subject and can try to relate to all the students in the class. The teacher and students could get to know each other better and feel more comfortable in the learning experience. Another example would be if the teacher were teaching a very hard subject, the teacher can put more time into trying to get the students to understand the material. For example, if a student is really struggling hard in math the teacher may have more time at the end of the lesson to try and help that student out.
One reason block scheduling may not be a good idea is because of the student's absence. If a student misses one day of class they could be behind in the subject he/she is trying to learn. For example, if a student comes down with the flu and he/she has no way of getting to school because they are too sick, they will miss a lot of material being taught. With the longer class time there is so much more material that is covered it would be hard for the student to catch up when they returned. Even if the student comes back with an excused absence, such as death in the family, they will still be behind and may have a harder time catching up because of material missed. This is also the same for teachers. If a teacher misses a day they could be behind in teaching the material causing the students to get behind as well.
Another good thing about block scheduling is you don't have as many subjects at one time. This means the student doesn't have as many classes to study for. If a student has six to seven classes in one day the student is overwhelmed with a lot of homework every night in all sorts of different subjects. With the block scheduling the student cane learn more because the classes will not be at such a fast pace. The longer class time allows the student to do more work in class, which would cut down on a lot of their homework that they would probably have if they were in several different classes.
Another con for block scheduling is that with prolonged class time some students tend to let their minds wander because they have been siting there for so long. If you get in class and all the teacher does is lecture the whole time, some students will get nothing out of it because they will be bored out of their minds, unless the student happens to be interested in that particular subject. Behavioral problems could also be a factor because of sitting in a class for long periods of time. This could cause some students to act up which would disrupt the learning process for others and discourage the teacher as well. Some students also have a problem with ADD or ADHD. This could be a major problem for this student because their minds would wander and it would be hard for them to concentrate through a long lecture in class.
A positive thing about block scheduling is that teachers have time to do more class room activities. For example if a teacher lectures for about 45 minutes they still have plenty of time left over to do something more interesting. They could have some kind of group activity that all of the students might like, or an educational video or movie that they could watch and learn a lot from. If a teacher uses block scheduling in elementary school, when they are done with their lesson they might allow the kids to go outside and run off some energy before their next class. This could help the student clear their minds and get them ready for their next class. In high school students need to relax every now and then. They could work in groups and talk among themselves about the work they have or what they might need help with. This would be important for all age groups. It would also make going to school a more positive experience.
Another plus of the extended class period would be if the teacher allowed the students to do their homework during class time. This would allow the students more free time at home and would give them more time to pursue extracurricular activities such as sports. Getting their homework done in class is also an option if the teacher is there to help the students if they need it.
Another slight problem with block scheduling would be the fact that some events only happen once a school year. For example, if you are in a science class and want to compete in the science fair you might not be able to because you might miss too much class time in that semester. Also, students who are in athletics might have a hard time concentrating. For example, football players might have a hard time learning in the first semester of block scheduling because of concentrating on upcoming games.
The most important thing is that kids today get the best possible education. This may or may not include block scheduling, but the bottom line is the student will only learn what the teacher teaches him/her. No matter what kind of school schedule a student has it is the job of the teacher to make it as interesting and as fun as possible.

the lights are shinning bright when the team takes the field on friday night.
they shine down on this wonderfull game as the players go through such pain.
they see how the team has struggled through the years, and in the end, it seems like there is always tears.
they can see the sadness on their face. Each player hoping he wasnt a disgrace.
next year when the lights are up and shining bright, those players will have their chance, once again to be in the spotlight.
they know next year will be a new story, hopefully the light shine down a new glory.
they know the team will get many cheers, and just maybe, there wont be as many tears.
